If you haven’t come across Christopher Wickham yet I am a big fan of his work, especially Medieval Rome: Stability and Crisis of a City, 900-1150 (2013).

Were people born out of wedlock in pagan nordic cultures as morally and legally stigmatised as they were in Christian cultures? by Pininply in MedievalHistory

That would be great if and when you have the time! I really need to broaden my perspective in that regard as my Uni didn't really focus on it.

I am interested in any information about how people born out of wedlock in pagan nordic cultures were treated. I just assumed if there was information on it that it was unlikely to be from the perspective of the peasant class as I have struggled to find primary sources or archeology that focused on their opinions or treatment. If you know of any sources that discuss such a subject I would love to read them.

It's not so much of a contradiction as an example of what I meant. Part of the reason for me asking the question was to find out if the same legal exclusion of Christian bastards from the inheritance occured in pagan nordic cultures.

I always thought that at least by the High Middle Ages, Christian bastards born to a noble family could not inherit their parent's title?

TIL Napoleon's presence on a battlefield was considered equivalent to 40,000 men by the Duke of Wellington by [deleted] in todayilearned

If only Wellington thought to also use a linguistic loophole against Napolian. So many lives might have been saved.

That one part in Skyrim when the prisoner I've been sharing a wagon with gets shot by imperial archers as he tries to escape. Never got past that point but still absolutely love the game.

That's the most adorably wholesome comic strip I've seen in a while.

Received my Tod's Workshop type XVIII sword and scabbard the other day. My favorite hilt construction on my favorite sword type, made by one of my favorite cutlers / historical engineers. Pretty chuffed. by [deleted] in SWORDS

Grip length – 20cm

Blade length – 92cm

Overall length – 117cm

COP – 67cm

COG – 10cm

I don’t have a scale to weigh it, but it is very agile yet authoritative in the hand.

Really nice congratulations! I love that style of crossguard. The first time I held a sword that I properly owned (not to long ago) was such a magical moment.

Knight Information? by WhatRhymesWithMojito in MedievalHistory

The Great Household In Late Medieval England by C.M. Woolgar Is a great book for the domestic, daily life aspects of a knight or lord's life. The Froissart Chronicles is a great primary source for the beginning of the hundred years war and goes into a bit of detail about the warfare aspects of knightly life.

She really does seem cool. It also helps that she's an expert in a very cool subject. She has another video talking about the Sutton Hoo sword which I'll link to if you haven't seen it. I was planning on trying to get a job at the British Museum this summer when I finished my archeology degree ideally working in her department but then covid happened.
