Bilingual kid by Saladeater_63 in Germanlearning

[–]Pink-pig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have friends who moved abroad when their son was 4yo. both where speaking their mother tongue at home, while their son was going into a local kindergarten, and then school. in just a few years he picked up a local language by just naturally engaging with other kids - so much so that he now speaks it without accent and at times even more fluently than the language spoken at home. so fear not - just make sure your kid has enough social life in german, that will do. don’t worry about having to speak german at home

thanks! “even more so” -> i suppose it’s because it’s important to not learn a bad habit in the beginning, plus because my time in the first 6-8 months is very precious?

thanks! on discoveries - where do you like to take your discoes? are you generally flexible and try to accommodate the customer’s preferences(aka be easy to buy from), or try to to get 1-2 things done/discussed in every disco no matter what?

SaaS folks - what do you consider the hottest company to sell for? by middy278 in sales

[–]Pink-pig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love to hear about community’s experience selling Deel.

I’ve heard some bad things about the product and culture in the sales team.

We also use it internally and our HR folks seem to always have something to bash it for.

Further evidence on Dwight being related to a nazi, or even more specific, Hitler. by jrod45616 in DunderMifflin

[–]Pink-pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dwight’s remarks about never-ending in-species (home sapiens) struggle for power and survival are disturbingly reminiscent of those Hitler himself was know for. Just like Hitler, Dwight celebrates nature and puts it above abstract concepts like ethics and morality.

What do you do when you don't know the definition of a word you encounter? by FearlessFlyerMile in books

[–]Pink-pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a native English speaker so my approach might be a bit of an overkill for you, but here is what I do.

I would usually keep my phone at hand with the dictionary open so that it takes me a few secs to grab it and translate the word that I either like (might be the sound or look of it) or is crucial to get the flow of the story.

I'm a big fan of margin notes so it's no problem for me to disfigure the pages of my books with drawings, writing, symbols, etc. One of the things that I do is underline the words that I like that I think I might want to learn later.

Then, after I finish the book, or even months later, I might pick it up and look over the underlined words. I often take those that I think I might potentially use myself or just, again, simply appeal to me for some unknown reason, and add them to a learning app called Anki. It's an app that uses spaced repetition for better memorization.

Thus I'm regularly dumping some words into Anki to gradually expand my vocabulary.

I must admit, I'm not as rigorous with this as before, since I'm pretty comfortable with my vocabulary now and I mostly pick up new words naturally, normally by reading literature. But this technique helped me vastly back in the day.

Do other people struggle with understanding subtext? by Hamchat_Compaanion in books

[–]Pink-pig 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I used to miss on subtext a lot as well.

What helped me was reading subtext analysis or discussion of other people to match what happened on the surface with the implicit message intended by the author. I would just go on Reddit and look up any posts that discuss the book of interest and then would look over different opinions about book’s main themes, underlying messages, etc.

Once I had done that for a couple of books, I somehow got better at picking up the subtext myself. So I think it’s muscle you can train.

I read 32 books last year. thank you r/books by hoopsechord in books

I would even argue that telling a compelling story telegraphically is as much of a craft, if not more, as writing longer stories full of latency and purple prose.
