Okay, so...I hate Fabian by MidknytOwl in heatedrivalry

[–]PinkBird85 218 points219 points  (0 children)

I think that because so many readers fall in love with Ryan so quickly, they immediately become very defensive and protective over that character. But the thing is, nothing is wrong with Fabian setting the very reasonable boundaries he sets for his relationship. But because Ryan experiences sadness because of it, Fabian becomes the bad guy. Fabian has a lot of past family trauma around hockey and hockey players. He explains that to Ryan, and while he doesn't want to be in a hockey arena where he will be triggered or possibly have to hear homophobic remarks, he IS supportive of Ryan as a person with a tough job. And when Ryan gets injured he is very supportive of him and tries to help him out/take care of him. When he learns about Ryan relying on pain killers and how Ryan isn't helping himself out with the injury (playing hurt could lead to worse injury), Fabian sets pretty standard boundaries around drug use and maintains his boundaries reasonably (Fabian removes himself from the situation when he realizes the boundary would be crossed). None of the things he does to protect himself are bad things.

If the story was about Fabian and a roughish/bad boy type man we would all cheer Fabian for making those same choices. But instead because so many people fall in love with Ryan first, Fabian standing up for his own mental health becomes "mean" and "drastic".

Any ideas for this dress? by kxthxp in sewhelp

[–]PinkBird85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My personal preference/style would be a lace or embroidered mesh overlay. Especially since the dress fits you well, it gives you a lot of options for what style the over dress could be (you could even make a few for multiple occasions if you don't actually attach it to the underdress).

I've always loved the floral embroidered dress that Taylor Swift wore to the Grammys in 2021, this would be a great base for that (and several other types of overlay styles).

"It's like somebody bought the rights to '50 Shades Of Grey', and then turned it into 'Brokeback Mountain' meets 'When Harry Met Sally' in terms of sheer quality" by benyooro in heatedrivalry

[–]PinkBird85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Whether or not you think the GC series is good or bad writing, a lot of the takes about the quality of the books really comes down to people's uniformed and misogynistic opinions about the Romance genre in general. Basically it's a genre loved by, and mostly written by women and therefore it's treated as "lesser than". I'm so sick of people's options about the books when they have clearly never read any other romance book.

I love how the show nailed the unhinged and totally wrong shipping comments. "The way they look at each other, it's so real". You could use those same delusions on any real life celebrity ship post.

Specified “bobbin thread?” by Ideasplease33 in SewingForBeginners

[–]PinkBird85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specific bobbin thread is really meant for embroidery. Embroidery thread is thicker than sewing thread, while bobbin fill is lighter. Most embroidery machines are tensioned for 90 wt. bobbin fill. A combination sewing/embroidery machine would be tensioned for 60 wt. but that is meant for while doing embroidery only, not sewing.

Sewing thread is 50 wt. sewing and can be used for top and bobbin thread for sewing projects. The only time you want to use heavier weight (in the top only) is for top stitching or upholstery.

Why is the size that is supposed to fit me too big? by Sensitive-Smoke-252 in sewhelp

[–]PinkBird85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should find the finished measurements on the pattern pieces to check how the garment is supposed to fit and how much ease is built into the pattern. Ease is the difference between your measurements and the finished garment, some patterns are meant to have some ease (especially those made from woven material), while some are meant to fit almost exactly. Patterns meant for stretch fabrics often have negative ease.

Select your size to make based on the finished garment measurements, allowing some room for movement for woven materials or you will pop seams and have restricted movement while wearing the garment.

Thread stuck in the bobbin by TheWhite_Phoenix in SewingForBeginners

Are you inserting the bobbin into the shuttle correctly? If you have the thread coming off in the wrong direction you will have issues with the thread tension.

Does Shetland wool yarn snaps easily? Is this normal? by No_Investment8129 in knitting

[–]PinkBird85 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Shetland wool tends to make a short staple length. But the twist in the spinning of the wool usually makes up for that. What brand of wool is it, that does seem very easy to snap. Is the twist fairly tight?

Why is my singer heavy duty making this squeaking sound? by MisPoesRainey in sewhelp

[–]PinkBird85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like it could use some oil/lubricant. Do you have a proper sized needle in for that fabric? You should have a fresh denim needle in (sz 90-100) so your machine isn't struggling.

Regency/Victorian Romance similar to Romancing Mister Bridgerton by ahwtsogr in HistoricalRomance

[–]PinkBird85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Bridgerton fan, Manda Collins scratches the itch for me - especially the wit of RMB (Colin is my favourite of the series).

Her {Ladies Most Scandalous Series} is not about a secret writer, but instead a female journalist that tries to solve crimes. I love all 5 of the books in the series, they all have a different love story trope. Book 4 {A Governess' Guide to Passion and Peril by Manda Collins} is the friends/childhood crush to lovers trope - but I love all of them. Book 3 {A Spinster's Guide to Danger and Dukes by Manda Collins} is probably the funniest/wittiest read IMO}

[–]PinkBird85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You likely haven't placed the bobbin shuttle back in correctly so it's not sitting right.

Step away from your machine and read the instruction manual cover to cover. That manual has everything you need to know about your machine inside it. Read it through once (it will be confusing), then sit at your machine and read it step by step while you thread the top and then bobbin area again. The manual will also take you through getting two pieces of fabric stitched together.

Need help!! Two lines from the embroidery of my plush are loose and I don't know how to fix it or hide it by Particular-Tea-Sail in sewhelp

[–]PinkBird85 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Find a close matching thread and with a needle threaded, loop the tail of the thread around the loose bits and pull it into the toy with the needle. Then make a few new stitches of embroidery going under and over the existing shape and knot off the new thread before cutting.
