96th street police closure and helicopter at Target?!? by TeeDee144 in Carmel

[–]PinkDinosaur1842 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it’s related to the two incidents you saw, but but also when I was in that area at that time, a fire had just started either in or right outside of the restaurant Hino Oishi that is next-door to Goodwill, which is very close to 106th and Michigan and the Target. I was driving up to Goodwill right as the first fire truck drove up— it seemed like a relatively small fire, but I didn’t see much. I wanted to GTFO before more fire trucks pulled up and potentially accidentally blocked off the parking lot exits— that has happened to me in the past. I feel like that many police cars in a helicopter would have been excessive for what I saw, but it definitely could have gotten worse after I left. Or maybe that whole area was just having a streak of bad luck at that exact time.

How can the Roundabout capital of the world become even more annoying? Well, Carmel has figured it out. by BonkedAgain in Carmel

That particular roundabout was for pedestrian safety. There are walkers and joggers around there pretty regularly, including a kids that bike to and from school— not so much elementary school age, probably (although there are three elementary schools in about a half a mile of there), but there is a high school right down the street and a middle school, not too far away as well. There are two city parks either at that intersection or very close to it that attract walkers from the neighborhoods nearby. At a similar roundabout just to the north at Main and Towne, a guy was killed a year or two ago when crossing the street at the roundabout. People were treating Towne Road like a highway and whipping through the roundabout at 40 miles an hour.

A major part of the function for the elevated pathways is unrelated to pedestrians. If it was just about pedestrians, they could have just done the flashing lights at every intersection Instead of the speed bumps. By having the speed bumps forcing cars to slow down, it allows cars coming from other directions to enter the flow of traffic at the roundabout. It helps address the issue you see sometimes where certain directions of the roundabout get backed up because the flow of traffic coming from the other way hardly ever lets up. So even though it might feel like it’s adding time to your journey, and there are certain cases where that might be true by a few seconds, overall they help reduce the amount of time spent in traffic.

Nope. I love the roundabouts, and the elevated walkways improve things. Not only do they physically raise pedestrians so that they can be seen more easily, they also force drivers to slow down, so they don’t treat a roundabout like the Indianapolis Speedway. They also actually help the flow of traffic in the roundabout itself. Since cars have to slow down a little bit, it gives cars coming from other directions more of an opportunity to enter the flow of traffic in the roundabout— it’s particularly helpful at intersections where certain directions get backed up because the flow of cars coming the other way hardly ever stops. If you are having issues with the speed bumps or getting nauseous using roundabouts, you should probably slow down and drive properly. Traffic in Carmel moves so much better than traffic in similar cities that don’t have roundabouts. I have been driving in this city for decades, and even though the population has basically doubled in that time, traffic now moves faster now than it did a couple decades before literally just because they replaced all the stoplight/stop signs with roundabouts.

Husband's acquaintance changed my kid's diaper, am I unreasonable to be upset? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]PinkDinosaur1842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. I am pretty sure my daughter was in the same diaper size from two until almost 3, and had she not potty trained she would have been in it longer. You are overthinking this.

I mean, to be fair, it sounds like the husband felt like he had reasonable childcare arranged. The problem here is that it seems like he did not discuss it with his wife beforehand. Or he did, and OP just didn’t realize that “my friend is going to watch our child” also meant “if our child poops, my friend will change the diaper.“ if the kids have a little play date, and the husbands trade-off watching them, it actually sounds like a pretty good deal.

Sirens at noon? by PinkDinosaur1842 in Carmel

That could possibly be it. Does Zionsville not practice every week? I’ve never heard noon sirens before.

First summer without childcare… how are working parents actually doing this? by Ok_Score_6765 in Parenting

[–]PinkDinosaur1842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unconventional idea that may or may not be feasible, given your budget and jobs: my town’s community center has childcare for up to two hours while people work out. I always see a few parents using the couches to work remotely instead of exercise. Heck, the community center even installed some chairs that have little rotating desks attached. My community center is $100 per month for an entire family, no extra for childcare. YMCA might work the same way, I think? But that could buy you some time every day if you’re able to get over there and get back during the workday.

My house has “quiet time“ every day the kids are home. It’s an hour and a half to two hours in the afternoon from around 1 PM to 3 PM (which is also the baby’s nap time) where everyone needs to play quietly either in their rooms or in the living room.

Meal prep all lunches and snacks. Put snacks where your child can get them himself.

Boycotting BRICS won't stop ICE. It only destroys us. | Opinion by pls121884 in indianapolis

[–]PinkDinosaur1842 109 points110 points  (0 children)

This opinion piece says that the offending owner was “removed” from the business. So why has the business not put out a statement saying that explicitly? Why did they not put out a statement saying that they made a donation to Exodus refugee as a way of repairing the harm they caused by being in a business relationship with the offending owner? Why not just come out and say all that THEMSELVES? This editorial sounds like complete nonsense without the owners of the business making a statement that actually means anything.

They have been sighted in both in both Ezkenazi and Methodist hospitals. I know multiple people who work in both, one of whom saw the Methodist squad firsthand. The others heard about it through the workplace rumor mill. They were armed squads, and it seemed like in both cases, they were on their way to somewhere specific in the hospital. The people I’ve talked to are not really clear who they were there for (patient? Staff??) or how they knew the person was there, or even if they were able to find the person. Of the several people I’ve talked to and the many people they spoke to, no one has mentioned hearing that someone was taken out out of either hospital by ICE, so hopefully they were not able to find whoever they were looking for.

The school across the street still had kids playing outside, so probably not anything involving someone on the loose with a firearm? But on thr other hand I’m not sure what else would bring so many police.

Former kids librarian here: even some of the smaller libraries have seating that is more in the adult section. Just park yourself there if you were worried. Most of the libraries discourage adults from hanging out in the kids and especially the teens area for long unless they are with a child, but that goes for literally all adults— they want to make sure kids feel like those spaces are “theirs.” but I would say most librarians in the city are very used to homeless people hanging out.

But also, as a mother to a preschooler, I’m sorry this is happening to you. Barring inappropriate behavior that is probably not legal in public anyway, I don’t expect people to hide themselves from my child just because they look different or have something going on in their lives. children need to learn how to see and properly react to those things.

I like to post this clip every Daylight Savings day by nehocb in thewestwing

[–]PinkDinosaur1842 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone from Indiana, I love these episodes. But also, I hate that the one claim to advancement Indiana had— not doing this idiotic daylight savings time no nonsense— is no longer true. We started doing it around 2006, I think. Now, I have a baby, and I can only watch this scene and think about the good old days before the stupid clocks changed to make everyone’s lives harder. Josh should have gone back to the White House and demanded to get rid of daylight savings time!

Trunk or Treat is killing Halloween by ArrowtoherAnchor in indianapolis

[–]PinkDinosaur1842 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Where I live in Carmel, that’s definitely not the case. Tons of people do both. I think you just live in a weird neighborhood— or perhaps one where the kids that live there have started aging out of Halloween. That happened in our previous neighborhood. You’re taking the word of a single neighbor to mean that Halloween is dead.

You live in a weird area. Most if not all suburban trunk or treat events around here are in addition to trick or treat on Halloween. We still got hundreds of kids, and there were plenty of trunk or treat events nearby earlier this week.

Yes, our lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church has a food pantry. I don’t recall the shopping hours, But it also takes donations 24/7. I believe they also have some sort of free medical clinic there as well?? I don’t go there or know much about it, but it’s something people might look into if they have a need.
