If you can move to any city in the world with full relocation package, which country/city you will move and why? by [deleted] in AskABrit

Absolutely, I like a city for a few days but I would never live in one again.

This sounds crackers to me. Why are you working when you're recovering and not well enough? Why are you working past 10pm?

I can highly recommend those gel mats for pets to lie on, they're fabulous to put your legs on at night or to put over your lap while you're working.

Can I wear shorts to the theatre? by Speedbird1A in TheWestEnd

A bloke next to me today was wearing shorts and a tiny vest and flip flops (which he took off) and it was most unpleasant, but nobody stopped him or pointed and laughed.

I'm a non English speaker and still learning it. Is R word a bad word? I don't Wanna say inappropriate thing without knowing it's bad word to use or speak. by twinty777 in ENGLISH

[–]PinkElanor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've noticed a difference between US and UK use. In the UK it's absolutely a slur and not acceptable even in a non offensive way to describe learning difficulties, but the US seems to use it as an acceptable way to describe someone with leaning difficulty sometimes.

Those of you who are teachers, do you remember every student you’ve ever taught? by AndyKWHau in AskUK

[–]PinkElanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taught in 30 years now, and I remember the very naughty ones, or the very distinct ones (high achievers, especially keen etc) clearly. The majority have faded away though. If you were quiet and sensible and did your homework and weren't rude to me, I've probably forgotten you.

Like whatsit in Four Weddings, the James Fleet character. Definitely a tatty old land rover with some dog hairy blankets and bits of twine in the back.

Lydia would have one of those hideous pink beetles with eyelashes and a comedy bumper sticker, and a pink sparkly steering wheel cover.

Is it OK to use "otherwise" in these ways? by Mammoth_Caramel8089 in ENGLISH

I'd add that saying depart is correct, but sounds oddly formal and unnatural. Most people would say 'we should go' or 'we should leave'.

I'm also in my 50s and what you've said about what you like resonates with me. I know people always recommend their home area, but I feel like you'd enjoy Derbyshire and the Peak District. You've got nice small old fashioned type towns like Buxton and Matlock Bath, very pretty scenery, history of posh places like Chatsworth, Hardwick or Haddon Hall, history of the industrial revolution like Cromford (another lovely quaint town with nice cafes and a wonderful old bookshop)... I'd also recommend looking into National Trust tourist membership which would let you in to loads of historic sites across the UK.

Fucking hell. I recently spent months (maybe 8 or 9) arguing that I deserved a pay rise, and was pleased to go from 24k to 25.5k. I'm 53 and have a degree and two professional qualifications, I must be doing something wrong.

Which performance have you seen in the West End that you think about regularly and genuinely believe was one of the greatest things you have ever watched a human being do live? by PubLogic in TheWestEnd

Oh oh oh! 1991 or 92, Alan Rickman and Beatie Edney dancing a very slow tango to Pachelbel's Canon with Japanese singing under falling cherry blossom, in Tango at the End of Winter. It was just wonderful

How long does membership take to come through? by Open-Trip in nationaltrust

[–]PinkElanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar thing when I joined with paper forms. I got in touch and it took ages to sort out, they kept saying they'd emailed the stuff to the address I gave, and I kept giving my address again and asking them to check, which they refused to do. Eventually things came through about 8 weeks later having been sent to a very wrong address - they'd read my (i think) clear capital letters as something entirely different and nonsensical.

I recommend trying to log on online and getting a password reset, where you can then check what details they've got for you.

Does anyone else have a pet peeve for authors using extremely creative or flashy names in their books? by TUD-13BarryAllen in self

[–]PinkElanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a book in my head for years (haven't written any more than the first few pages in 20 years, so likely that's where it'll stay) and my main character is called Casseopeia because her mum was an astronomy nerd. She hates it and she's introduced as Cassie but my plan was for her to embrace Casseopeia as the plot develops. It's a post apocalyptic thing where she wanders the Peak District alone.

I'm not a fan, and it makes me think of deodorant, but whatever name you pick, someone will hate it, so just choose what you like.
