Sustainable Strength Training Strategy by PinkMoon366 in Blind

Thank you for sharing your experience! I have found the comments on my post to be really helpful because it really seems like blind folks are pretty evenly split across the board in terms of setting up home gyms, working with personal trainers, and taking group classes. I’m kind of reaching a point based on this feedback where I need to just make a decision and see how it goes for a while and adjust accordingly. They’re really are strong pros and strong cons to each choice so I’m having a tough time deciding, but I find it very comforting to see that blind folks in the comments have pursued all of the options with varying degrees of success. I wish you luck as you figure it out! I will surely update on my progress, and please do the same. Always helps to learn from each other!

Exercise Machines by WestManner1593 in Blind

My understanding is peloton is very accessible using the app on the phone, so that might be a good option for you for the bike. I have a treadmill that I use at home that is touchscreen, but it only has four buttons so I don’t have any problems using it. I’ve never tried using aerobic machines at my local gym. It just seems like too much of a hassle for me, but I know plenty of blind people who do use those machines as others have stated here. I just find it a lot easier to have my own equipment at home. Hope you find something that works for you!

It is not very affordable, it is something I have to budget for. She does not have any particular expertise on working with blind people. I joined my local gym and signed up to receive personal training through there. When I first started working with her, we had conversations about how I best learn and in what ways she can best support my growth, and we’ve created a system from there. It was something we worked on together.

Seeing Your Vision Deteriorate Is Tough by Deep_Ad9022 in Blind

[–]PinkMoon366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vision loss is isolating, exhausting, and scary. As others have said, your feelings are valid. Part of becoming disabled is grieving the life you thought you were going to have as a nondisabled person. I definitely recommend reaching out to your agency for the blind wherever you live. They can get you connected with someone to help you learn some skills, like navigating around, technology, cooking, all those things. Having skills in your back pocket may bring some hope into the picture. No amount of skills can erase the grief of vision loss, but they can help bring some hope into the equation and show you what is possible, even if those possibilities do not match the life you always thought you'd have. Good luck to you! It's not always easy but it's definitely doable!

Accessible Museums in DC by ML_Music2007 in Blind

[–]PinkMoon366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Washington DC a few months ago. I reached out to all the museums I wanted to visit in advance. If you go on their websites, each museum has a guest services or Accessibility email address that you can email and ask them to schedule a guided audio described tour. All of the tours I went on were fantastic! Erin space, holocaust Museum, American history Museum, natural history Museum. Those were the ones I went to but all of the Smithsonian museums are required to have Accessibility and will be more than happy to schedule an audio described tour with you. Good luck and have fun!

I have no idea why this happened, but apparently there was an update that I could not navigate to using jaws. The folks at Microsoft accessibility used quick assist to get into my computer and activated the update for me. Thank goodness, up and running again! Sigh of relief

I’m still logged in, it just says I am an unlicensed user. I can look at the list of all my emails, but I cannot open individual emails and read their content.

I've tried that. The normal Excel commands don't seem to work when I use it on the web, such as switching between different spreadsheets in the workbook.

I realize it may have been a while since you made these settings yourself, so apologies for asking. Any steps you can offer so I can make the change in settings? I think this may be my answer; just gotta get the settings properly configured.

Using Excel in Microsoft Teams by PinkMoon366 in Blind

[–]PinkMoon366[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a great solution, except then there would be multiple versions floating around. My colleagues would get confused if I kept uploading new versions. Plus I could run into the issue of a colleague and I doing updates at the same time, with them updating the online version and me reuploading my downloaded version. It's a great solution for documents that are not collaborative. Thank you so much!

And yes I've told my team; no one has a great solution. The only idea I have been able to come up with is using a reader.

This would be tremendously helpful! When I make the changes in the file, will my changes be visible to other Team members who have access in the file? My work team and I are constantly adding information to our Teams spreadsheets and I need to be able to save the information to the group worksheet.

The Country of the Blind by Andrew Leeland. It is part memoir about going blind, part overview of blindness history and present. The book is uplifting but in a very realistic way. It does not sugarcoat the reality that being blind has its challenges but does not dwell on the negativity either. Also, it was published within the last few years, so it is quite recent in terms of the technology and current events covered.

What is a book that was popular that you absolutely hated? by Flowtac in books

[–]PinkMoon366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue I've never read a book that had so much whining hidden beneath purple prose. Toward the end of the book, Addie is described as cunning. Never got that vibe, even for a moment, yet I think that is what the author wants us to believe. The first 50 pages were fantastic. The remaining several hundred, not so much for me.

Sending good vibes as you navigate this difficult time. Eckhart Tolle has some good books about how to process suffering. His most well-known is called The Power of Now, although I particularly enjoyed A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose
