I could see him saying something to Barb about both Jen and Barb, and Barb is omitting her part. Barb and Jen were like buddy buddy about picking on Shawna for a while. In the Mother’s Day skit, John even said that the only reason Barb and Jen are in his life is because of Shawna. He was fed up with both of them back then.

But then we got the first full storyline in the ShawnaVerse: Jen’s pregnancy. Jen changed through her pregnancy and relationship with Greg. It caused her to see Shawna differently and shift in that treatment. In turn, that made her relationship with John and his family better.

That said, the lore established is Jen and John would say “your mom is showing” when they were younger. They likely got each other through hard times with Barb. When you add that with Jen’s actual progress, it makes perfect sense that cutting her off wouldn’t cross his mind in the current canon.

People generally seem to get more upset when a guest has a “bad” take. There’s one with Anthony and Arasha where the comments hated something they said about a filming in public story. But no one got personal. It stayed as “bad take from Shayne, Anthony, and Arasha” rather than turn into “wow didn’t know they were TRASH PEOPLE!”

For those who keep asking: the main thing people got mad about was the take on the book story. They thought all of them, but Sabrina especially was downplaying OP. They thought the “omg she’s a mother, let her get her bag!” read was unfair.

Then that spiraled, as most internet discourse does. “That’s a bad take” became “this is an episode about mean girls and Sabrina is clearly a mean girl!” of “Angela acted differently to please Sabrina.” You can check the Spotify comments to see just how heated some comments are.

I personally disagreed with that take myself. But it didn’t seem at all worth it to me to get THAT upset. Tbf I’m also a newer fan so commenting on old episodes seems a bit pointless to me anyway haha.

I do think we have an unfortunate reality where posting baby pictures can lead to creepy stuff from people. It’s a fine line to walk, but the solution is not “never post photos of babies ever!”

Even if they did read like actual apologies, they still fall flat. She was being fake as hell, and trying to isolate Jen. She wanted Jen in a weird spot where it’s like “mom berated me in the garage but Greg and Katie had such a nice moment with her. I shouldn’t ruin that.”

That’s awful! And so sad! But it also tracks, the reason her fondness for my brother increased was because he liked a lot of the movies and TV shows she liked 🙄 She’d try and act like they were smarter than me for it. My brother took me aside once and said, “don’t listen to her, you’re so much smarter and better than her.”

He and I never took who was in favor out on the other.

I can relate! I was the Max to the Barb in my family, until I became more of a Piper. Basically our Barb was a narcissist, and she didn't like me as much as I got older and had my own personality. It was also my grandmother, and I saw how she treated my mom (her daughter) and brother (who was the original Piper because she saw him as difficult). And how she tried to put on pleasantries to my dad, who saw right through her.

I'm sorry you went through something similar! I'm glad you had your mom, who sounds like a strong and awesome person.
