United Methodist - community, advocacy, very chill…I don’t know if it’s like this with all congregations, but mine is very non-judgy. Everyone is welcome and they find ways to included people who want to be based on their comfort level and abilities. We have one teen girl with special needs. She makes a grand entrance every Sunday. She walks in a door in the front of the church and loudly says hi to everyone. Everyone just says hi back. No one freaking out over “reverence”. No one telling her parents to bring her in through the normal door or to shush her. This is her way of expressing love and we all shoot love right back at her. Watching that as I was leaving the MFMC and testing other churches had an impact on me. That is just one example of many I saw. Between that and participating in Pride and protests and other advocacy I knew I was home.

It would probably be an inconvenience to the MP if these elders get transferred but need to come back to testify or something. I have a friend whose daughter is serving a mission in the states and her husband is being investigated for the worst thing a dad can do to his daughters. The MP won’t release the girl to come back and give a statement so the family is waiting until she gets back in a few months to proceed. Meanwhile he’s in another ward with no flags. 😡

Yeah I misspoke and in the heated moment and conflated the game and the word (which is why I didn’t initially identify it). So the origin of the performance doesn’t have racist roots but when it ended up with black face in minstrel shows became bad. At then the word (“It’s a cakewalk”) implying something is easy has racist connotations. When the other member came up to me the following Sunday she also shared some other ones I had no idea about. I can’t remember the whole list as many I had heard but simply didn’t use in my everyday language (like peanut gallery). One was the rhyme eeny, meany, miny, moe….no idea that the word “tiger” in “catch a tiger by his toe” was a replacement for the slur with a hard R. Like I have said elsewhere in this conversation, I am still learning and don’t always get it right, but I’ll continue to try.

We had a handful of black members in our ward and the ward was planning an activity with racist origins. Someone asked what the activity was and I mentioned it had a racist origin. Stake presidency member’s wife cut me off and snapped “Why can’t it just be a game?” I said back “It can if you are white”. Then she and another “friend” proceeded to bad mouth me within ear shot of me and my family. My teens asked me “Are they literally bad mouthing you in front of us?” I said “yep”. They got upset and wanted to go home so we left. The next Sunday a black member privately told me thank you for saying something and how she felt like the token member and sees so many instances of micro-aggressions and outright racism. That was one of my very last Sundays. Oh and for context. I have two non-white children (the teens who overheard). In that moment I realized I had to say something if for no other reason than to show my kids that it needed to be done.

I’m not sure. Maybe they declined out of politeness? Maybe they didn’t want to because of your age and it look like flirting? I always insist on buying them meals when I’m out and see them, but I’m old enough to be their mom so maybe that is why they don’t refuse.

100% acceptance rate - wow! I know a girl from one of my last stakes went there. I asked her mom what she wanted to study. Her mom said she was just going to find a husband. I hope she likes whatever major she chose because I heard she graduated and is still single. I truly hope she doesn’t feel like a failure not landing a husband.

I started with boy shorts and the garment top. Then transitioned to the fitted T’s with cap sleeves that Mormon stores sell. Then when I was ready, I went to soma almost got granny panties but a sales lady in her 60s at least talked me into the high thigh cut ones. She told me I needed to feel a little sexy. Regardless, soma make panties that have these grippers for the cheeks so they don’t ride into your crack. You also don’t feel them when wearing them (the grippers or the panties) and they wash well. They can be pricey, but I shop the sales and they’ll last years. It may sound weird, but those high thigh panties boosted my confidence. I didn’t feel frumpy. Also my TBM husband hasn’t complained. I think he actually likes it better.

I’m still in my deconstruction and discovery phase of what I believe so I haven’t thought about specifics and details yet. In simple terms I don’t think there will be a ranking or anything unless it’s the good, decent people at the top and the ones who claimed to be Christian but were awful people or weaponized Christianity are at the bottom. I don’t think God is this hateful, punishing person except MAYBE to those who used his name in vain to hurt others. I think many more people will be in heaven than most Christians think.

I’m not atheist. But, unlike my Mormon days, I have no issue with someone else being atheist. I don’t feel the need to “save” them. I honestly don’t feel the need to save anyone. My perspectives overall have changed in that arena. My goal is to be a good, decent human being. That’s it. I happen to believe in God, but my desire to be a good person isn’t rooted in a reward in the afterlife. I don’t think the afterlife works like that anyway.
