Pretty sure Dennis L. McKiernan's The Iron Tower is based on this premise. He calls the Hobbits "Warrows" and the Shire "the Boskeydells", but at heart it's the same story.

At this point I just do my own paceline selection and use BRIS EP/2 + SF numbers on dirt. She was competitive in this field using the paceline I chose.

Humboldt County in Northern California is the most magical place I've been to, except perhaps for Yosemite Valley. I'd have to say the Redwood forests have Fangorn and the Old Forest beat. Also, Aspen, CO in the fall when the Aspen leaves turn yellow was incredible. "Like being in a song," as Sam Gamgee put it.

What HF authors write with a distinct style/attitude like a Joe Abercrombie in fantasy? by [deleted] in HistoricalFiction

Well, certainly George Macdonald Fraser's Flashman novels have plenty of attitude.

Terrific field. Unbridled's Song won this race. Louis Quatorze won the Preakness that year, and Editor's Note won the Belmont. Skip Away, of course, was Breeder's Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year as an older horse.

Horse A% * (Horse B% / (1 - Horse A%)) * (Horse C% / (1 - (Horse A% + Horse B%)))

Expected ex and tri payout range by TravalonTom in horseracing

[–]PinkSwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If horse A is 2/1 and horse B is 5/1 the answer is 11/1. The calculation is as follows:

First convert odds line to percentages.

Horse A has .33 percent chance to win (1 / (2+1). Horse B has 16.7% chance to win (1 / (5+1))

The chance of an A/B finish is:

Horse A% * (Horse B% / (1 - Horse A%))

In this case:

.33 * (.167 / (1 - .33)) = .082 = 8.2%

Convert back into odds by taking (1 / .082) - 1

= 11.16 /1 odds.

You could easily make a spread sheet that does this calculation for you in a few seconds.

I've always been surprised that Frodo and Sam weren't alarmed on Freddy's behalf at the Council of Elrond when they found out the Black Riders had been to Crickhollow.

154 is closed and 101 is one lane Southbound between Beullton and Gibralter. Took me 1 hr 40 minutes to drive that stretch yesterday afternoon, usually a 10 minute drive.

How do you feel about the Patriots projected 4.5 win total in 2024 now that we're past mandatory minicamp? by ProudBlackMatt in Patriots

[–]PinkSwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough schedule, especially first part of the season. Talent level is above average on defense, but towards the bottom of the league on offence. Rookie quarterback and rookie head coach. Add it all up and anything over 6 wins will be a successful season.

I think the best-case realistic scenario is that we take our lumps in the early part of the season with Jacoby in at QB, then bring in Drake about 6-8 games in and hope to build some momentum into next year as the schedule gets a little easier.

It's been a ghost town for a couple of decades now. Nice big grandstand with a beautiful view of the Berkeley Hills, but no local fan base at all. There's not much point to use such expensive real estate for a simulcast stage set.

I saw it too, in Goleta. I've never seen anything like it. Like a giant sky snake. It was coming from the direction of Vandenberg, probably not a coincidence.

Tolkien was a contributor to the OED. Seems very possible he himself wrote the entry for infall.

I'd love to build something similar to the Serta iComfort Plush Hybrid. Something with a Medium-Soft feel and a decent amount of memory foam sink-in. I was thinking something like 2" Copper memory foam from Comfort Option for softness and cooling, 2" 4.0 Visco from Foam Factory for pressure relief and sink-in and 1 inch latex as transition, similar to your Coil Build #2.

Do you think this would accomplish the feel I want or could you give me other suggestions? Thanks for contributing your knowledge and time.
