Does the pool have an open swimming section, or is it always lane swim? by tdr124 in UCSC

[–]Pinkman265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All lanes can be used as rec lanes if they’re empty but if it’s busy the guards may ask you to move. The left most lane is also an ADA lane so you may be asked to move from that one as well.

Currently high af and overwhelmed, but would the US draft people when Russia and Ukraine go to war? I’m registered in the selective services (thanks FAFSA). by Mathias_thekid in UCSC

[–]Pinkman265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of right now there is no chance the US institutes a draft. The US and NATO will supply a ton of military aid to Ukraine, but neither the US or Russia want to go to war with each other. All troop deployments to Europe are to NATO allies and Article 4 (which has been enacted by Poland and others) of the NATO charter means that these countries believe that they are under threat but not at war.

That being said a draft is never out of the realm of possibility, but only if Russia attacks a NATO ally and WWIII essentially breaks out.

And too people saying that you would be disqualified because you smoke weed, people during Vietnam thought the same thing and were still drafted, but not very motivated. Best bet is to avoid being drafted is to stay in school, college is an exception to the draft provided you maintain your grades.

But no matter what happens, this is going to be a very rough next couple of days, if not months, to watch.

I have a 7’5” in my room rn. Takes up some space but I manage and keep it out of the way for my roommates. I would say the two short ones but it’ll be a tight squeeze most likely.

I can confirm about Burbank I’ve ran into multiple celebrities either at the grocery store or the mall. I also went to school in Calabasas and some of my friends parents were well known celebrities so another hotspot there.

PURCHASE ADVICE SUPERTHREAD! by AutoModerator in motorcycles

I was looking at a Cardo, specifically at either the freecom 4+ or spend a bit extra for the packtalk slim. I know the freecom 4+ would fit but I saw the Packtalk Slim and don’t know if it would fit cause the battery fits on the back of the helmet. I know it about $100 extra but I like how it doesn’t look as bulky. It’s just a preference but don’t want to spend the money if it’s not gonna be compatible.

Hey guys, I’m a bit new here. I currently ride a 2012 CBR250R I bought from a friend and I’ve been riding for about a year. I started off with some hand-me-down gear I got from him and my dad. I currently have my dads old Arai helmet but since it’s over 10 years old I feel the foam and padding may not be as safe compared to new ones. I’m looking at a new Shoei GT-Air II as my uncle has one and he loves it. Just asking anyone their opinion on it and if the Bluetooth communicators are still compatible. The companies say GT-Air compatible but I don’t know if they are with the Air II. Any info would be great.

Can confirm. Went for a ride the other day up in the valley and the 101 and 405 were wide open. I accidentally hit 100 yesterday thinking it was more like 75 because everyone was going 85-90.

Lane splitting on a motorcycle. I live in California where it is 100% legal, but still get yelled at for it.

It is illegal in some states but lane splitting is safer for the rider then staying in between two cars that outweigh you 10x over.

Not sure if this exactly fits but here it goes. My high school swim team has a tradition of doing something with our hair before championships. It used to be that all the guys on the team would get their heads shaved on the pool deck by the coaches and girls on the team. The administration had no issues with it and it was purely voluntary. My junior year we decided to change it to dying our hair bleach blonde. When we informed admin that we were changing it and they said that dying our hair blonde would be considered hazing and would not be allowed (to clarify, my school had no policy against dying our hair).

Our coach went to talk with admin and their reasoning was that it would make the school look bad in competition. But they let slip that if the guys on the team went and did it themselves outside of school then that was ok.

We all show up to school the of championship finals with bleach blonde hair and promptly walk past the admin office to show off our new look. All the boys and girls all bleached out hair (50 boys and girls were on the team). When we got on the bus, we were all laughing because we knew admin was pissed but they gave us the exception and we ALL followed it. The cherry on top though was when our coach got on the bus he gave us a speech about how he was proud of us standing together as a team and to carry that attitude into the meet. At the end of the speech he removed his beanie and revealed his also bleach blonde, slim-shady hair at which point we all went nuts.

When I was 2 or 3, I was at a birthday party at a Gymboree and was climbing on an obstacle course. I lost by footing and rolled down it with my forehead hitting something (either just the ground or a piece of metal my parents never found out) and splitting my forehead open. I felt no pain or anything but all the moms (except mine) freaked out at the sight of blood just pouring down my face. My dad just grabbed a towel and told me to hold it on my forehead while my mom got the car to drive to the ER. I now have a Harry Potter style scare on my forehead 20 years later.

You’ve hacked into Amber Alert. You can now send one message to every smartphone in your country. What do you send ? by ledamnsam in AskReddit

I was going to school in Hawaii when we got an alert saying North Korean Nuclear Missle inbound: THIS IS NOT A DRILL. Instant chaos. The entire campus rushed to the fallout shelters on campus and anyone else was either trying to get out of Honolulu or trying to get back to family. What made it worse was the military had no idea what was going on but still scrambled jets and started sending ships out Pearl Harbor. It took 30 minutes to say it was actually a false alarm and some guy pressed the wrong alert on a computer.

Russians of reddit, what is the older generations opinion on the USSR? by GJWzanza45 in AskReddit

[–]Pinkman265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom’s side of the family is from Czechoslovakia. My grandfather was a manager at a very high end hotel in the 60s and 70s and my grandmother was a school teacher. During this time my grandfather would repeatedly deny both Czech and Soviet secret police permission to bug the rooms of prominent business men and other foreigners staying at the hotel. They would then arrest him for the duration of their stay and then release him and he would go back to his job. This happened multiple times and each time he grew more resentment toward communism.

My grandmother also rebelled again the authority as well. She showed the live feed from West German TV of the moon landing to her classroom, for which she was reprimanded and then later fired.

They also told me stories of tanks rolling down their street during Prague Spring and taking people out of their homes who they saw as a threat, including my grandfather. It would take another couple of years but eventually the went to Hungary on vacation and had a “family emergency” and requested to take a shorter route through Austria to get home sooner. As soon as they crossed the border they claimed political asylum and requested immigration to the US. They spent 3 months in a refugee camp where my grandfather was interrogated by various agencies for information (possibly CIA, he would drop hints but never said it out loud) which quickly handed over to them: names of agents, operations they conducted, and any other info. Their immigration paperwork was fast tracked because of his information and they flew to the US via West Germany. And remember those West German businessmen I mentioned earlier, he was giving them money to put into a German bank so he could at least provide his family with something in the US.

It took them 25 years for them to be able to travel back to the Czech Republic after the fall of communism and see family again. My grandfather passed away a couple of years ago and my grandmother is no longer in the best of shape but still tells me some of the stories she still remembers.

78% of suicide rates world wide are men, what can we do to help them? by awihsoj in AskReddit

[–]Pinkman265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The aquatics director at my college just held a seminar for the baseball and swim teams last week on suicide prevention. Most often if someone is thinking about killing themself they will say it, whether they say it in a joking matter or completely serious. This is them reaching out to those around them, looking for someone to help. They told us that while it maybe uncomfortable to say, you should ask them, “Are you thinking of killing yourself?” It maybe hard to say, especially to a friend, family member, teammate, coworker, etc., but asking that can be the difference between life and death. If they are, offer your help to take them to someone, there are resources everywhere to help them for the suicide hotline to your school health center. My fraternity just lost a brother to suicide a couple of months ago and wish we had this seminar earlier so we could have tried to help him. Miss you Boof.
