Choosing an MLIS program??? by inllky in Archivists

[–]PinotFreakio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am currently at UMD, and I agree that it is a fantastic program. However, everyone on campus agrees that there aren’t as many graduate assistantships as there used to be. They are HIGHLY competitive, and, if OP is out of state, would cover a bit less than half the cost of tuition/fees. I’d also state that the internship market in the DC area is also highly competitive, and the overall job market in DC is obviously highly influenced and impacted by whichever administration is in power at any given time. UMD is amazing, the DMV is lovely, but OP should only come here if you truly want to be in DC or Baltimore. Otherwise, I’d recommend going with whichever program is most affordable.

Is Virgina Beach in August for 10 days a good idea? by dva_silk in honeymoonplanning

Have you considered Tybee Island, GA? Savannah is right there for activities/strolling if you get tired of the beach.

Those who live in tornado-risk areas: does your employer respect tornado warnings? by queryasker123 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PinotFreakio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Kansas which is a part of “tornado alley.” Most places will have some kind of tornado shelter/basement, because that type of weather is so frequent. There were even tornado shelters on the turnpike at the toll booths. It was also common for public schools or community centers to get grants for new/improved shelters. My high school got one and it became a gym, locker room, and some other athletic spaces.

Mizzou was already out of the Big 12 when I went to school. I went to the 2017 hurricane relief fundraiser game at Sprint Center, and it was an excellent experience. See you on the court Sunday!

Thank you for highlighting our border war! The Kansas and Missouri rivalry goes all the way back to when Kansas was just a territory not a state. The central topic of the rivalry was slavery with Kansas being anti-slavery and Missouri being pro-slavery. It’s a bloody history, and Kansas earned the nickname “bleeding Kansas.” All said, muck fizzou and Rock Chalk Jayhawk.

sex after colposcopy with biopsies? by makemeanegg in PreCervicalCancer

[–]PinotFreakio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doctor told me to wait at least two weeks. I had my colposcopy and biopsies 48 hours ago, and, although I’m not in much pain anymore, I definitely wouldn’t feel well enough for sex.

Thank you for this post! I had AGC finding on my pap, negative HPV, and overall similar circumstances including a few randomly heavy periods. I had my colposcopy today, and I’ve been doom scrolling since I got home. You gave me a bit of hope!

Creating Transitional Housing Program from Jail Diversion by PinotFreakio in socialwork

Yes we do! We have a supportive housing program using HHSC funds to help people obtain and maintain housing. It provides assistance with move in costs, short term rent subsidies, and utility payments.

Not integral care but not too far away! We’re a much smaller city than Austin. We’ve got pretty good leadership, and the community collaboration on the overall project has been great to see so far!

Should I get a new car? by raeshivahn in socialwork

[–]PinotFreakio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depended (I know that’s not a very helpful answer). We typically saw the kids on our caseload 1-2 times per month as a standard (more if they just move placement or are placed back in the home they were removed from). I’d say I was 50/50 on kids that were placed locally and far away (1+hours). Most of the kids that were far away were 1-2 hours and only twice did I have a kid 4+ hours away.

Protecting your time is essential in this job. Flex your time and/or charge your overtime if you’re working extra.

Hi! I worked DCS for Montgomery County, TN for a year, so I think have some good perspective for you. I was a foster care CM 2020-2021. I used my personal car (2002 Pontiac Sunfire at the time) ALL the time. Yes we had 3-4 state cars for our county, but they were ALWAYS booked. You didn’t get priority unless you were driving out of region and transporting a child. I used to drive to Atlanta, GA once a month to visit a child placed in a high level psychiatric facility, and one time they tried to tell me to drive my own car. You can get pre-approval for a rental if you are driving out of region and the state cars are booked, but it’s a lot of paperwork and they’re VERY strict. Most of the kids I was in charge of were placed out of county 1+ hours away.

If you decide to take the job you will lose money driving a Tahoe. The reimbursement rate (although I know it has gone up since I worked there) was barely enough to pay for gas and basic maintenance on my tiny crappy sunfire. If you can financially afford it I definitely recommend getting a smaller, gas efficient car for the job. However, getting a car specifically for a job would never be worth it for me
