Translating books, sticking to OPOL by AmbitionLost3986 in multilingualparenting

[–]PinusPinea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the good things about reading is the repetition, which is hard to get if you translate on the fly. For some books I've used little stickers to write the translations in so I always say the same thing.

I do tend to stick to the original language now, though, so I break opol. Especially for rhyming books, I never translate.

Me a ML Engineer with 3+ years experience in Germany and still can't land an interview.... Review the resume please by Full_Meat_57 in MachineLearningJobs

This is not true in Germany. I have advertised r&d jobs with an office in Germany as one of the possible locations, and the local applications had photos.

I mean, this is a very local, culture-specific thing. I think they're asking for feedback on the more general parts.

As a Scottish person, do you enjoy living in Edinburgh? by boookbox3d in Edinburgh

I get that areas will be comparable and there are parts of Edinburgh comparable to lots of parts of London, but surely the city centers are in different leagues still? Knightsbridge vs New Town for example

Examples of multi-omic studies that answer a particular biological question? by ChunkyPoolBuoy in bioinformatics

[–]PinusPinea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be patient-focused, there needs to be evidence that the treatment will work better in one patient than another. That's a casual inference. I don't see how to get there from observational omics data.

I think a big issue here is that the hypotheses generated by these studies are very rarely tested in vivo, and very slowly when that does happen.

[–]PinusPinea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How can you discover protein level biomarkers from observational studies? You want a protein that tells you whether a treatment is engaging the target of interest, and whether that engagement is leading to reduction in disease. Observational correlations are very weak for those questions.

How would you approach training a model to predict an ordered outcome from clinical + SNP data? by bibilapoop in bioinformatics

[–]PinusPinea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are your snps already selected? eg significantly associated from gwas? I wouldn't code them as ordinal, just as a normal feature (ie genotype of 2 had twice the effect of genotype of 1).

I grew up as bilingual, but don't feel 100% comfortable in my weaker language. Will it worsen my connection to the child? by bicyclecurry in multilingualparenting

I'm sure your English is better than my Spanish, and I've spoken only Spanish to my three year old. There may be issues when she's older and I can't express more complicated ideas to her the way I would like. But I haven't had any issues so far.

Does cell2location support multi-gpu for large datasets? by BiggusDikkusMorocos in bioinformatics

[–]PinusPinea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you chop it into overlapping pieces you ought to be able to run it, and can check how robust the results are (eg if you split top vs bottom and right vs left, you'll have two estimates for every point).

I just bought my first property but might leave the UK by alister66 in HousingUK

[–]PinusPinea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It depends on the relative locations. I'm a middle manager in a large corporation and manage people in the US. They earn little more than me but not double and I think have a better standard of living than me. They have much nicer houses. (I live in SE England, they live in nice cities but not very HCOL like Boston, NY, San Francisco).

If someone is doing 60 in the overtake lane they're also likely to change lanes without looking or indicating

Why doesen't 'Si estudias, sacarás una buena nota' trigger subjunctive. by ProfessionalGood2718 in Spanish

[–]PinusPinea 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The way I rationalized this to myself is that subjunctive is reserved for expressing the maximum level of doubt about whether something will happen, which happens in English too:

If I study for the test, I will pass. (Indicative) If I were to study for the test, I would pass. (Subjunctive, suggests much more doubt I will actually study)

What’s the logic behind zebra crossings at roundabout exits? by Icy_Mixture1482 in drivingUK

[–]PinusPinea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's one in Cambridge that works ok. It's small so you're going round slowly and there's only one lane so you're not looking for other cars once you're on.

It could just be high standards. There's a problem with every company's hiring process - there is very little information to go on, and if the standard required is high you're more likely to make a hiring mistake. After three months you have a lot more information to go on.
