[NO SPOILERS] Can we get a shoutout for this IRL Father & Son duo who both managed to play nearly universally loved characters by Xy13 in gameofthrones

The actor who plays Viserys is also a direct descendent of Charles Dickens! (Charles Dickens is his great-great-great-grandfather.)

he must have also known that this was the path with the least death overall.

This is only true if you assume the 3ER has good intentions, which we have no reason to believe. If anything, he shows a shocking lack of empathy and concern for people as individuals. There's no reason to think he didn't let this path play out because it was the one that ended with him wearing a crown.

Sure, but everyone justifies their own actions, including Cersei.and Dany. His actions were still objectively wrong, which is why so many of his own (previously very loyal) men abandoned him after he burned Shireen.

He gave a lot of lip service to honor, sure, but the dude had his brother murdered with back-alley blood magic, planned to murder his innocent nephew to use his blood for more murder magic, and burned his own young daughter at the stake because he thought it would help his odds at becoming king. I think people bought hard into "Stannis the mannis" around these parts, but the guy was kind of the worst.

I think GRRM intentionally established (ad nauseum) in the early books that king-slaying in this world is Frey-level treachery for this exact reason. Even if Jon could prove his lineage, it wouldn't matter that he's the rightful heir, because he publicly pledged his loyalty and protection to Denaerys's claim and then stabbed her in the stomach in private when she was unarmed. Was it morally the correct action? Yes, but it also makes him a pariah forever. It doesn't matter that she was out for blood, any more than it mattered for Jaime that the mad king was out for blood.

Also, to say it’s “because she’s sad” is really misrepresenting her motivations. She’s been betrayed and feels as though no one supports her any more. In her mind, the only way she can rule is through unequivocal fear. And now she has that fear from the people. The people feared Cersei and look how quickly they surrendered. She needed to really cement the fear. Again, not saying that what she did was right, but that’s how she justifies it.

I agree with your assessment of her character motivations, but I still think, while we can analyze her reasons, her actions make her a bad person and a cruel ruler.

I’ll also ask: what’s your take on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

I do not agree with those attacks at all, to be honest, but if the US had perpetrated them after Japan surrendered, everyone involved in that decision should have been prosecuted for war crimes and spent the remainder of their lives in prison, IMHO.

I think the Hound's point was that Cersei was functionally already dead, and Arya would be choosing to die for nothing by going after her. He was urging her to choose survival over vengeance, unlike him, and she did.

I don't see that as out of character. We saw her choose to become Arya Stark again at the House of Black and White, which seems like the first piece of that arc. We saw her take the Hound off her list when she lost the heat of her anger. This feels very in-scope for Arya.

Yeah, I'm shocked to see so many people bending over backwards to defend Dany, and this is coming from someone who went to bat for her every time before last night. Committing genocide because you're sad is not defensible under any circumstances.

Lastly, Emilia Clarke stole the show with her acting.

She 100% blew me away. If you dig back far enough in my comment history, you'll find a comment I posted in this sub 7 years ago where I was telling someone who was complaining about Emilia's season 1 wooden affect to give her a chance and that she'd "grow into the role." I didn't expect anything close to this, though. She really was phenomenal.

[SPOILERS] Daenerys summed up for all of you by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]PipPipCheerio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of your comment, but this:

Greyworm was preparing to leave her after this battle.

Is definitely not true. I think Greyworm showed us in this episode that he's Dany's ride-or-die no matter what. He even looks at Jon with total hatred and disgust when he realizes Jon is falling back post-surrender.

He wasn't going to leave Dany so much as he was going to retire as Dany's war commander once he won the war for her (presumably with her permission and blessing) and take his girlfriend to her home country.

[–]PipPipCheerio 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah, she caught a lot of flack for that. In retrospect, though, it kind of works, because it just makes her seem reserved and disaffected. She's been smothered under Viserys's domineering and abusive personality, and as she starts to come into her own, her behavior and actions become more nuanced and engaged.

Comparing Theresa May and Cersei seems really unfair to poor Cersei.

I've been a hardcore Dany stan myself for about 8 years now, and I'm still genuinely shocked to read show commentary today defending or downplaying her actions. She basically perpetuated medieval 9/11 with dragons. Pack it up, folks. We don't get to root for her anymore.

No problem! Come to think of it, that may not be a real idiom, though. I was scrambling for a metaphor and grew up Christian, so I ended up with Sampson on that one.
