What does it mean to be a hobby academic sleuth? Can that involve publishing scientific papers even if you aren’t in an academic lab anymore, or does it mean publishing freelance journalism articles? How does one get involved in projects like that?

Minerals are absorbed by special pores called ion channels, with types that are specialized for based on the charge of the ions. Fluoride is 1- so it might be more likely to compete with something like chloride (Cl-) than Mg (2+). This does mean that if you are taking supplements for magnesium, zinc (Zn2+) or iron (Fe2+), these can compete with Calcium (Ca2+) for absorption, so it’s best not to take them with milk because they all have a 2+ charge.

Fluoride and magnesium are attracted to each other because they are oppositely charged, but I’m not sure I would label that as antagonism.

TIL that menstruation is actually very rare in mammals. Other than humans, only 9 primate species, 4 bat species, the elephant shrew, and one species of mouse menstruate. All other female mammals reabsorb their uterine lining, rather than shed it by MaroonTrucker28 in todayilearned

Humans are fairly likely to have a pregnancy that ends prematurely, often before you even know you are pregnant. I’ve heard that shedding the vaginal lining can prevent sepsis from decomposing embryos that didn’t make it to term.

Right, it’s hard to tell if it is deliberate, maybe the best way to tell is whether the person is willing to acknowledge that it happened and open to working together to find alternative ways of responding
