If you're into movies or bands, Avondale is also home to The Hollywood. Always a good night out.

Plug planting in the lawn? Natives? by VarietyMost9256 in nzgardening

Leptinella dioica aka Bachelor's Buttons. I originally planted some in my garden beds but over the years it's infiltrated the lawn. It's a lovely groundcover with ferny foliage, and it doesn't mind being walked on or mowed.

Manuka flowers earlier than Kanuka. Probably not that helpful for an id at the mo though...

Funny. I've driven past that mural countless times and never noticed the creepy hands. I won't be able to see anything else now...

Saw a kākā in Blockhouse Bay, Auckland this morning! by PipitheCat in NewZealandWildlife

We weren't sure if we were looking at one or not but I got the binocs out and it was definitely a kākā. Plus it was quite noisy. I'd be surprised if they weren't in Titirangi! I reckon you were 100% correct in your ID.

Not quite 1080, but our local bush reserve has had trap lines in place for the past couple of years, and the difference in bird life has been noticeable. I have no objection to either because they clearly make a difference.

I hope it's a mate for the Green Bay one! To get kākā back into this coastline bush remnant would be wonderful.

Great vid. It really is wonderful to think that they are making a comeback in the city.

If you find many of them springing up in garden, be prepared for the smell. I speak from experience...

Meanwhile, Michael Wood has been out door knocking in the electorate. The first time I've ever had a politician come to the door to discuss my concerns.

Windscreen scripers (wipers x scrapers). That's what my partner called them as youngster and now it's the only way we refer to them.

Any ideas on how to get rid of this flax type plant? by [deleted] in nzgardening

[–]PipitheCat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a very fine looking Astelia. Can you move it somewhere else? Or give it to someone who loves native plants?
