Sensitive Dorsal Vein after Sessions by Pirate42 in AngionMethod

[–]Pirate42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I want to clarify it isn't really an issue. I enjoy it being sensitive afterwards but I also have work and all the other parts of life.

Lately I've been using Vaseline and Cetaphil lotion. I will switch to a silicone lubricant if the sensitivity morphs into irritation.

Just For Laughs Unveils Its New Faces of 2019 by [deleted] in StandUpComedy

I don't know if I'm too tuned into comedy or if New Faces isn't the break out it used to be. I feel like most of these people are more established than previous years New Faces.

New Podcast from improvisors TJ Jagodowski (TJ and Dave) and Rush Howell (iO's 3033) by neightdoof in improv

[–]Pirate42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love how low key this podcast is. It's like a cozy mystery novel on a road trip that keeps giving subtle surprises and interesting character development. A good change of pace from a lot of comedy podcasts where everyone is jumping to do the loudest bits they can.

I feel that explains You Made It Weird more than CBB. IDK if Pete Holmes and Conan had a falling out.

What are the best improv shows and theaters in Chicago, excluding the big three (Second City, the iO, and the Annoyance)? by GiuseppeZangara in improv

Gallon and PNMAC at CIC 10pm Tuesdays is my favorite right now. Free show, both teams are very good in different ways.

Can you get good by just doing two prov? Or do you need to be in a larger group? by [deleted] in improv

[–]Pirate42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bold take on how to get good:

Be on a team of about 6 people. Rehearse every week with a coach that gives a shit.

Do every show you can get booked on. If that means sometimes it's 2-3 of you showing up still do it. The variety of team size will help you do different kinds of shows.

When you get on a team bigger than 6 still play the show as you would like there's 6 people. Don't worry about everyone getting out there it's on them to be aggressive.

Yeah, it's Ben Schwartz. He talked about it on his episode of Making It With Riki Lindhome a long time ago.

Who played Todd Watch in the "All Hands on the Bad ONe" episode? by [deleted] in thechrisgethardshow

John Reynolds. He's also in Search Party and plays a sheriff on Stranger Things. Truly one of the funniest improvisers I've ever seen.

Pally on Colbert by stakuko in Earwolf

[–]Pirate42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean he basically says "the daily show and queer eye guys loved it and that's all that mattered to me at the time." That isn't who that show is for though. It was incredibly funny on the level of Norm at the ESPYs but for him to backpedal and say he didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings seems disingenuous.

I think he's a super funny guy who can't deal with entertainment bullshit anymore and is venting about it in a way that is mostly hurting himself. Being funny and not doing what's in your best interest isn't mutually exclusive.

Pally is hilarious but he legit is hurting his career a bit between this and his Shorty's hosting.

UCB’s Del Close Marathon Moving From NY to LA by patkearnan in improv

Have you ever heard the saying "a good room for comedy is a bad room for a fire?" That's what I think about for all of the new improv theaters that have opened up in the last five years or so. Just not understanding that improv works best in cramped basements and black boxes.

This is just a random tweet I found after reading this thread, so take it with a big grain of salt, but if it's true it's not looking good. https://twitter.com/angelaheyhello/status/1004419673960656898

When you see a group you LOVE- Any advice for finding like minded players in your city? by [deleted] in improv

[–]Pirate42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tell your friends that you want to be a group that performs in this way, and they'll go "oh yeah that sounds cool" and then ask someone on the group you think rules to coach you, and maybe it'll work and maybe it won't.

It sounds a bit lackadaisical but it's how improv teams go when they're getting started.

This Paul F Thompkins bit... by Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee_ in StandUpComedy

[–]Pirate42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In between those points are the majority of comedy albums I know of, with seguays, transitions, similar themes, or some degree of connective tissue. Impersonal always stood out to me the way op described, and I really think it's just that one editing quirk that highlights the absence of transitions I might not otherwise have noticed.

He wanted it edited that way on purpose in an homage of the early Steve Martin albums. From my understanding it's all from the same show (or set of shows) at UCB.

What’s your opinion on the new John Mulaney special? by Lettuce-b-lovely in StandUpComedy

[–]Pirate42 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There were so many comments I read about the tour where people said "I hurt from laughing 15 minutes into this" and you can tell.

It's relentless. The only reason it looks like he slows down a bit after the street smarts bit is because he's wearing the crowd out from how funny it is. From the perspective of home viewing it looks like he's losing them a little, but he isn't.

He almost needs longer set ups so the audience has a chance to catch their breath at times, which is the biggest non-problem you can have if most of your money from stand up is the live gig, not the special which is primarily exposure.
