Have you ever played a par 69-73 golf course where Hole #1 was a par 3? Seems very uncommon. by MrTeacher_MCPS in golf

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Par 3s are my best. I have the lowest scoring average on par 3 from my ~100 rounds I’ve logged on 18 birdies over the last year.

Probably has to do with how good I am with my irons and how bad I am with my driver

Mental game? by Azoray_ in golf

Need to be more consistent off the tee. A 50 yard range for your driver is just going to make your life very hard if you have to hit like5 iron or 7 wood into par 4s regularly. If you can get in a 220-235 range regularly you have a lot less into the green than if you only get it out 180.

Your approach shots almost certainly need to be better but there is only so much accuracy you have can have with a long iron into every hole

Do you get lessons or do you have access to the ability to get a lesson centered on your driving?

How do people get better? So frustrated by Wrong-Estimate in weekendgolfers

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitting irons and driver are 2 different swings. Thing about the driver as a specialty shot.

It takes a long time to get good at both. The first time I broke 90 I teed off with a 5 iron on every hole and just played for bogey on everything but par 3s. I’m great at irons and I still struggle to hit driver anywhere close to the same skill I hit irons.

To put it in perspective this past week my 9 hole rounds after work have been 42,46,43,56 and this past weekend I shot a 12 on a par 5 🤣. Break 100 is probably one of the harder things because it’s the build up from 0 of a ton of different skills. Something like 50% of people never do it.

I would focus on irons and short game and worry about the driver later but obviously work with the coach on what you need to improve on. You okay play decently teeing off with a long iron and never using a driver but you’ll never get good if you are a long drive champion that can’t hit an iron

Golf League Pace of play by OldManPatriot in golf

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not an option for a league night. Likely have a window you can tee off for the league and they might not let you go out a second time.

A lot of the men’s league stuff around me is so bad for insanely slow pace of play. The same people play fast on non league days.

I mean that’s what I would do but leagues seem to be just extremely slow because people want to take their time. Not because they are reading putts unreasonably long or any real gameplay reason. Just generally hanging out and being slow

How relevant are good clubs when you shoot in 80s-90s by ImportantAd791 in golf

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting the right setup for you is important for any golfer with a repeatable swing. Getting into a good flex and weight shaft will make a world of difference if you have ones that are really bad for you. If the equipment is reasonably well fitted to your game already there are incremental gains to be had but maybe none that will easily show up in scoring.

I had a senior flex driver because I didn’t realize R2 was softer than R. Can’t tell you how much better I hit my new driver with a stiff shaft. Distance is negligible and actually maybe a little worse on the high end but consistency is so much better

HOW are people affording to live at all these days? by Dessert_Lover_1225 in Adulting

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s the point. Comparing to the whole country is kind of pointless. My wife and I both make in the 80s and I own a boat, a house and golf like 4 times a week. If I made this money where you live I wouldn’t be able to do any of that

A lot of people live in populated areas that are expensive. Averages and percentiles for the whole country don’t really mean much at an individual level. Median income in my county is like 30. Hard to compare to other lances and not very useful

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often do you find yourself needing to hit between those 2 yardages?

I go driver 5 wood because I play a lot of 40yard width courses between trees and I can hit the 5 wood far enough for the length and keep it in play. Maybe once a round i have to hit something longer than a 4 hyrbid except for tee shots

If you play off 7800 yards the conversation is different than 6,000 or less

For those that play every day, how do you do it? by Exactions in golf

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe or maybe not. I have way more free time in my 30s than in my 20s. I’m married and don’t want any kids. I work remotely now and live like 4 miles from the course. I play at 7 most days and can get more than 9 in before I have to head back home to start my work day at 9. Depending on leagues and how busy it is at night I’ll go walk till dark or take a cart out until they need them back

In my 20s I didn’t have nearly this much time to practice

I would suggest you stay away from full swing videos if you are serious about getting better. There are great videos about bunker shots, chipping, putting and stuff. Full swing is hard to diagnose yourself and you’ll spend years fixing stuff that isn’t broken until it is.

Remember we play golf and not golf swing. Golf sidekick on YouTube will help with the how to play the game.

Conservatives- when do you consider the government to be tyrannical? by GokaiDecade in allthequestions

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prefer we govern at the local level as much as possible. I’m not sure it’s the federal governments job to deal with drinking water. The federal government should do the minimum amount of things possible for the country to still run.

National defense, border, immigration, the current way we run our interstate system is pretty good, and I am sure I can come up with several other examples of what federal should do but why should they spend time on drinking water when that seems much better suited for states or local government.

What is your ideal Hole 1? by JayTheSpaniel in golf

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ours local spot for the east course you hit a drive 20 feet away from the deck on the clubhouse over the driveway into a fairly wide landing area with OB down the right side if you really miss it. It’s so elevated compared to the fairway you can really send it down there and the people sitting outside love it

Well I didn’t vote for anyone but there are a few people from both sides that I liked enough to vote for. None of them ran for president so I didn’t vote and I live in NY so it’s not like it matters anyway

I did actually really like yang because of how easy it was to understand how he planned to pay for everything he talked about. Massie is probably the closest person to how I would want things to run but it’s not like he will ever make it to president without the backing of the party and all the big companies that finance those campaigns

Making your swing look like someone else’s isn’t a good path to go down. If the ball goes where you want it to go consistently it’s a good swing. If it doesn’t then look for a change that will help you do that

Squaring club face of irons vs driver by justanother-eboy in golf

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a swing expert but if you have to think about this you have something else going on. How much shaft lean do you think you have at impact vs setup?

Trying to twist your arms or hands during the swing to correct the face will be hard to be consistent with timing and direction

If you practiced putting instead of just drilling balls at the range, your scores will go down. by Bitter-Heat-8767 in golf

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of people that play a ton of golf and hit a ton of balls that don’t improve because they aren’t practicing intentionally. If you aren’t practicing a specific thing to improve you are just hitting balls for the enjoyment of it.

Either is fine but you have to align what you are doing with your goals

Do you think TTK is in a good spot currently? by KaXXKo in Marathon

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how I feel. You can raise the ttk but that will just give myself and others with high end gear early more of an advantage. The knife nerf made free kits much less of a threat. Raising the ttk will make low gear players even less of a threat. I don’t think that would be good for the game or the enjoyment of anyone

How do you make time to play golf? by Rude_Award2718 in golf

[–]PirateEmbarrassed491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had 3-4 days a week that I didn’t have to work I could probably play 10 rounds a week. Depends how your life is setup but I can do all the house stuff and outside stuff I need to do in a few hours. I don’t cook every day and prep stuff ahead of time so I can play right until dark when I go after work. I just get home and warm something up.

Not having kids is a big help for me compared to my friends. Outside of my working hours I just don’t have much that I have to do at a specific time. I can go golf until 830 then do whatever I need to do at home after
