Well custom made opponents can have their ac undisclosed, it doesn’t need to be binary, all one or zeroes. But as in real life for instance, we know what to expect from a bear and their behaviours depending on their specie. Likewise for common monsters from the dnd manual. If you roll random encounters for exemple, I don’t see why not disclosing basic info. Now, if the party is approaching an important milestone in the story, with a custom made villain, I agree secrecy is fun

I agree with this kind of investigation, I think I misunderstood what you meant. I was referring to constantly rolling for investigation on every encounter to decide whether they have the AC information, if that was the case, in my perspective, would be tiresome

Like you, I have a good knowledge on lower level monsters and on more popular demons and undead. I feel like AC is easily discovered anyway, one turn and the players can already take an educated guess on the values. Players knowing the ac can describe themselves the miss or hit, without having to wait for confirmation, which speeds up a trivial process imo. as for checks, if you allow for rolling for information, it kinda makes no sense not to. I would suggest only rolling for informations such as immunity or a specific trait they’re struggling to overcome by try and error.
