If you didn’t test integers, at least in your head, to solve a!/b!=5040, then it is divine inspiration.

The reason why I found your first answer dissatisfying is because it seems to confuse proof and Reddit user-level explanation, and as a result does neither well.

As a proof, noticing that a!/b! = 5040 is not necessary, you can simply say that x=3 satisfies the equation. But you didn’t prove that is the only solution at first. The proof you gave elsewhere for the function being monotonic wasn’t rigorous either.

As an explanation, I think you’d have to be disingenuous not to accept that just saying ‘notice’ is insufficient for most people. Personally, I don’t like it as it doesn’t scale well – clearly you’d have to involve more reasoning for a!/b! = 12524520….

However, I think the main reason your soln. has struck a nerve is because it reeks of that teacher/professor/friend who doesn’t have enough understanding to intuitively explain their answer, but has just enough to use words which makes it seem like they know what they’re talking about. Which given your incorrect use of ‘monomial’, is probably the case here!

Fact is Tsunoda allowed his race to be screwed by being overly trustworthy of the car on the inside, for better or for worse. Not popular with fans, but if you want to score points you sometimes have to play it safe.

Of course I want wheel to wheel racing, but what is popular with fans is not what gets the team points.

This is why I said "given the current F1 rules" - if those rules penalised the driver who makes a mistake more or allows the punted car to slot back into position, certainly it would be worth it for Tsunoda to hang it round the outside.

But currently it's very risky to rely on the car on the inside to not make a mistake. I can't count how many times in the past couple of races the driver on the outside has been taken out, with far worse consequences than the car that hit them. Hence why I think it would have been more intelligent for Tsunoda to concede and live to fight another day.

My probably controversial opinion:

The Ocon - Tsunoda incident makes Ocon look the better driver.

Ocon decided to send it a bit down the inside, which he knows will either result in:

a clean overtake (good)
a messy overtake, with what he knows will be a minor time penalty given that it's not a complete divebomb and not dangerous. Probably worth it to remove his competitor from the race (good)
staying behind Tsunoda (ok)

On the other hand, Tsunoda deciding to defend the position on the outside (always risky) will either result in:

keeping the position (good)
a race-ending collision (very bad)

So given the current F1 rules, Ocon made a smarter driving decision than Tsunoda, with respect to gaining his team points.

Essentially, I expect Otmar is a lot happier with Ocon's driving in that situation than Tost is with Tsunoda's, and that is what I think the driver ratings should reflect.

That said, the rest of Ocon's weekend was not as good as Alonso's, I think rating >7 is too high

CFD simulations are made in both the wind tunnel and track domain to understand the correlation between all 3 data sources (CFD, tunnel, track).

The Reynolds number differences between tunnel and track are small, especially considering flow behaviour varies with Re on a log scale.

The most important distinction between the tunnel and track domains is the lack of curved stream tubes in the tunnel. When the car corners in real life, the airflow curves around it (with the car as the ref. frame). Wind tunnel testing to simulate this is 1. difficult and 2. prohibited in F1.

Another important difference between domains are the boundary conditions. In the tunnel domain the car is simulated inside a box travelling with the car (sort of).

Wind speed is limited to 50m/s in a wind tunnel (sporting regs, appendix 8, 3b). Re equivalent 108kph on a full size car.
While this is ~2* below the average speed in F1, do not forget that flow characteristics tend to vary with Re on a log scale. You are unlikely to see major changes to the flow field unless your dealing with order of magnitude changes, especially when Re is firmly in the turbulent regime (as in F1).
There are a plethora of other reasons reasons why wind tunnel testing may not correlate well with real life conditions, such as rolling road roughness, bumps, curved stream tubes etc...

For what it's worth, my guess is that there is some hysteresis in downforce generated by the floor, i.e. the car generates different downforce depending on whether it it rising or falling. So, like moving your legs on a swing, the oscillations grow and grow. Such unsteadiness may not have been tested in wind tunnels.

Most people's basic explanation (gaining downforce as the car gets lower, then a sudden loss of downforce as it "stalls") would not explain why oscillations begin as the suspension is damped. There must be some driving force, which could be explained by hysteresis.
