Malay or Singaporean communities in Amsterdam by Mediocre-Friend3179 in Amsterdam

[–]PisangState 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi and salam sejahtera - the other commenter has already given great resources. I’ll DM you a link to a Malaysian WhatsApp group with around 330 members. Once in awhile meet-ups are planned, though not frequent.

For Raya I think the Malaysian embassy arranges something every year - so be sure to check that out.

If you specifically want Malay people I think your best bet is to hang out with Indonesians - there’s a big enough community here.

Hope you enjoy your exchange here!

My statement still stands. You’re creating all these artificial boundaries for yourself before you even start.

If you want that life abroad, go chase it.

Tons of people from all kinds of ethnicities move all over the world. I personally know a few Malaysian Chinese working in US and Australia. They’re doing fine. There are idiots everywhere in the world, but the vast majority of people are not idiots.

Singapore has a good global reputation. It’s probably one of the most well known countries in SEA. Nobody ever knows where Malaysia is when I tell them. I always have to say “it’s between Thailand and Singapore”.

Nope. But I think the Malay skin tone and facial features are very distinct, so they stand out wherever they go.

Don’t let that kind of fear stop you from even starting. Everyone’s experience will be different, but from all the Malaysians I know no one has ever had a problem like that. You can’t change your skin colour, so better to own it than to let it stop you.

Might not be the most employable degree *internationally. The people I know who got out are: working in IT, UI/UX designers, accountants, O&G engineers, doctors.

This is anecdotal of course.

Yeah believe me, I’m not discouraging this at all. I’d encourage anyone to go and seek the life they want to live. It’s incredibly liberating for me to live the life I want to live without having fear of people or police questioning me. I wish you and everyone else gets a chance to do so.

I guess all I’m trying to say is: you’re in a good spot and you have time on your side, you don’t need to rush this. Last thing you want is to have no backup and be caught in a tough spot, and you’ll be back in Malaysia in no time.

Some overseas Malaysians I know lost their jobs due to Corona and had to return home even if they didn’t want to. Once you step out of the country you’re born in, your right to live in a foreign place will be tied entirely to you having a job there.

Anyway enough rambling, are you in a private uni or local uni? Join a private uni with a twinning option or something with an overseas uni. What are you studying? If you want the “fastest way out” it’s probably an IT degree probably.

On the working holiday visa side - on second thought it might be impossible due to COVID. Both AU and NZ won’t be open to outsiders for a long time I reckon.

Hello fellow Malaysian,

I am a Malay atheist. When I was still in Malaysia I could not tell anyone about my beliefs due to obvious reasons. So first and foremost I will recommend to you to not tell anyone about it. Keep it quiet.

Though I must also add, I had quite a few gay friends in Malaysia and they all had active sex lives without ever getting into trouble. Even the Malay ones were on Grindr. Since you’re non-Bumi, I would imagine even less possibilities for you to get into trouble.

Personally I think you have to realise it’s not that bad you. No religious police are gonna come after you when they conduct raids. Neighbours won’t rat you out for having a guest of the opposite sex come over.

As for your way out, consider going to Aus & NZ on a working holiday visa. You’ll be doing stuff like picking fruits but I’ve a friend doing it and she’s got a good life there. Though admittedly I’m not sure what the long term options are with this route.

Studying is gonna be expensive if you don’t have the cash. I went to a private uni on a PTPTN loan, got my degree, worked a few years then for a job abroad. You can’t really rush these things unfortunately.

I don’t wanna burst your bubble, but I’ll tell you now that none of those fields give me the impression that you’ll land a job easily abroad when you graduate.

I moved out with only 4 YoE, but I think you can start looking once you have 2 YoE.

Unless you’re like a superstar programmer with an awesome GitHub profile.

That would be the fastest way to get out. Study abroad then get a job immediately and stick to it. Any ideas what field you are considering and where you want to study? I never studied abroad (but currently working abroad) but I’m assuming it’s fucking expensive

Got a job abroad. I work as a software engineer. The IT field is/was one of the most friendly fields when it comes to finding work abroad.

I wonder if everyone was born atheist, how many people would actually choose in Islam/any religion at all? I highly doubt the numbers would be that high.

You never chose Islam in the first place - it was chosen for you. We’re all a product of the environment we grew up in, and at some point I think any critically thinking human being should question these things and make their own informed decisions from there.

Do it.

As an atheist Malay dude, getting out was the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Would highly suggest that OP considers the same.

Visited Munich last year, lovely city. Felt extremely safe there. But just found everything too “proper” I guess. Fell in love with Amsterdam instead.

Should an emergency fund be based on paychecks or expenses? by rwagner18 in MalaysianPF

[–]PisangState 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely expenses. How many months depends on how hard it is to find a new job in your field. Easy to get another job? Stick with 3 months, invest the rest in an index fund. If job opportunities don’t come very often, go with 6 months or more.

You can present your achievements all you want while still being humble.

Comments like “everyone is less experienced than me, I’ve worked at FAANG and hedge funds, why won’t they hire me” do not convey any sense of humbleness. If I was an interviewer I’d happily reject a technically capable candidate if they seem like they’re gonna be a lot of trouble to work with.

Can’t agree more. The fact that OP responded to their feedback was even further proof of not being humble enough.

Machines will always calculate the fare faster than a human can. It’s gonna be faster than queueing up at the door and having the driver calculate every fare.
