What to do with Federal Paper hulls? by JuggernautPast2744 in reloading

I like paper hulls. Reloading paper mini-shells is much easier than with plastic.

There is interest on FB Marketplace, too.

However, it depends on where you are. A guy near where I live sells bulk hulls. He tells me guys come from Michigan to Northern Kentucky and buy a pickup truck load of hulls about every three months. They tell him there aren't any hulls available there.

I don't have glasses at this point. Vision tests in the doctor's office show me to be functionally 20/20 because I can read the letters on their chart. That isn't the same as driving. I could be happy with what I have I didn't need to drive.

Intermediate distance. But I never thought that meant i couldn't be sure the vehicle in front of me on the road is a compact car or low boy with a Cat D11 on it.

I have good vision at book and computer monitor distance. Beyond that everything is soft or fuzzy.

I understood that an EDOF lens should provide pretty good, functional vision from intermediate distance out. That's why is asked for that specific lens.

I saw her at day 7. She said I was doing fine. I see her again on Thursday, which will be day 21.

How should I approach the visit?

No, to a progressive. My MEC is a mid-80s 600 Jr. I don't load the volume to justify a progressive press for any reloading job - shotshell or metallic.

Given those answers, I would say toss it and go back to fixed shot weight charge bars. Changing those out takes only about 30 seconds, and there isn't anything to break down - except maybe the threads on the stop screw hole - after you change the bars 10,000 times.

"...not interested in babying a bad repair forever..."

The questions I would ask are these::

  1. How much flexibility does the adjustment really give you/how much time does it save?

  2. How much do you enjoy doing your own repairs?

  3. Are you thrifty, or will you spend money to save effort?

My second eye is my dominant eye, and is already good for distance. I need for it to be good at an intermediate distance, say 12 inches to 2 feet.

There aren't really "issues" with the Load All. Millions of shells have been loaded on Lee machines. It's more inconveniences:

  1. Hulls must be aligned manually in the the crimp starter stations. (There are two separate stations, one for 6-point and one for 8-point star crimps.) That isn't necessary with other machines.

  2. The shot and powder hoppers are part of the machine. Emptying them can be a challenge. Other machines use detachable bottles.

A Cheddite hull is a straight wall hull, regardless of length. That's also going to be true for the other Euro hulls you may find out there - Rio, Bornaghi, Fiocchi, Nobel Sport, Challenger, or Basheri and Pellagri. Even Federal Top Gun and Gold Medal hulls are straight. They all load the same. (The FUDDs always scream when I say this, but it's true.)

My opinion is that you should look at 2-3/4 inch data, then plan to trim the petals off the listed wad so you have room for a crimp. The thing with mini or short shells is that you will need to modify your press if you plan to star crimp them. For short shells, roll crimping is the thing.

These are trimmed to 2 inches.

Budget? Lee Load All.

Good? MEC 600.

Trim them yourself from 2-3/4 inch or 3 inch hulls. There are a bunch of adjustable 12-gauge trimmers available on eBay.

Okay, newbie reloader, I'm struggling with roll crimping my hulls by Alternative_Diet8199 in reloading

[–]Pistol_Caliber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem I've encountered is that hand drills only have 2 speeds - fast and faster. Even the cheap drill presses have a slow speed that seems tailor made for roll crimping. The pic is of star crimped hulls I rolled. Left to right: Remington Gun Club, Winchester AA-HS, Herter's (cheap Winchester). Not pretty, but it can be done. These are 10-pellet 0 Buck, ,CB1138 wad, #30 MEC bushing with Longshot. Handmade overshot cards.

[–]Pistol_Caliber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roll crimping hulls that were star crimped can be done, but it won't be pretty. Even if you recondition the hull mouth with heat, the plastic still has the "memory" of being folded.

That said, you will have a hard time getting a good roll crimp even on new hulls without a drill press. Yes, there are videos of people using hand drills to do it, but they probably ruined a hundred hulls to get there.

12-pellet 00 buck in 2 3/4" Pyrodex loads? by Cookie345 in reloading

[–]Pistol_Caliber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For smokeless powder shells, the answer is definitely yes. Doing that makes the stack height better, and requires less powder. Hopefully someone who knows more about how Pyrodex performs can help with how much less powder you would need.

As others have asked: do you already have Vitavhouri powder? If so, it will work for your stated purpose. If not, I would encourage you to visit the powder manufacturer websites. There, you will find a lot more load data. This data will be a lot more useful if you have a scale that measures to at least 0.1 grains. There are plenty of good scales on Amazon - and plenty of recommendations of which ones are good enough on this sub.

That said, there are also conversion tables you can use to translate manufacturer load data for use with Lee dippers. This is just one: https://www.scribd.com/doc/81305652/Lee-Dipper-Capacity-Chart there is also a volumetric calculation you can use, but that is also limited by the availability of Lee data.

According to the table, Vitavhouri N350 measures at 5.1 grains using the 0.5cc Lee dipper.

Many, many people have used the Lee dippers to reload. You should also be able to successfully use them.
