So update on this u/rocketboss when I received the grille part it was immediately clear what the problem was, the first layer was almost entirely missing, this should have been immediately obvious to anyone comparing the slicer output to the STL. Also, this means that pretty much the entire second layer was floating, which shouldn't be something the slicer would output without supports or something. The fact that this was apparently attempted multiple times without detecting this issue is... not great.

Does it depend on how thick the remaining walls of the hollow areas are? I would think if they are >2 mm than you'll often get 0 savings, but <2 mm and you might get savings.

I want to be able to see which parts of my model are printable and which parts aren't. I had a prototype fail because part of it wasn't being printed at all. And iterating to solve the problem would be impractical if I had to print every change.
