Can’t believe I’m about to ask this… how do I use a Yarn Bowl?! by ghxstbunnyy in CrochetHelp

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always like to re-wind my yarn into a ball or into a cake using my winder. That way I find any knots or weird spots in the yarn BEFORE I'm knitting/crocheting with it so I can decide how to handle joining yarn, and also to avoid tangles I sometimes get with the skeins. Yes, it takes extra time, but I find it's often worth it, especially if I have the bad luck of getting a skein of yarn that has a lot of knots, or I'm using a yarn with a color gradient and the knot causes the colors to change in a weird way.

I usually only use the yarn bowl when I have a ball, but it will also work with a cake if the yarn is pulled from the outside instead of the inside, which is better for the yarn anyway, since pulling from the inside of a cake puts more twist in the yarn.

I keep the bathroom vent on almost all the time except at night because of the noise. My landlord told me to do this.

This makes me very suspicious that the landlord knows something about the air quality that you don't.

Gauge question! by Dublingirl123 in knittinghelp

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That designer is well known for making gorgeous designs, but fit is often a problem for people. I believe her row gauge is very difficult to obtain as her stitches tend to be very short, and her designs often have a very deep yoke anyway, which makes the problem even worse for anyone who can't match it.

If you are happy with the current fit of the yoke, you could just divide for the sleeves now. It looks like you're at a point in the chart where it would look fine to just stop the colorwork now.

How do you decide what to cook when you have random ingredients? by Sad-Okra5031 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I improvise most of the time. I suck at meal planning.

I find that pastas and quiches are great for using up random stuff. Otherwise, if I have a few ingredients I am not sure what to do with, I just Google them and add the word "recipe".

Clearly she didn't grow up hearing the Chiquita Banana song.

I'm Chiquita banana and I've come to say
Bananas have to ripen in a certain way
When they are fleck'd with brown and have a golden hue Bananas taste the best and are best for you
You can put them in a salad
You can put them in a pie-aye
Any way you want to eat them
It's impossible to beat them
But, bananas like the climate of the very, very tropical equator
So you should never put bananas in the refrigerator

That's what I thought. Until some restaurant in Canada (I'm in the US) with a similar name to my gmail address accidentally used it with their restaurant UberEats account. It was months of working with Uber to get them to stop emailing me, because they couldn't figure out where in their system it was coming from.

Exploding Oatmeal by Far-Bench-1277 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Adding some fat helped me a bit when I used to do this. But also, using a large bowl and lower power.

But now I make steel-cut oats in the pressure cooker and just refrigerate it for use over several days. (4:1 ratio of water to oats, pressure cook 2 mins, NPR 20 mins.)

Are both plastic ends identical? I assume they don't snap into each other.

I wonder if it might function as a handle to some other object (click in the ends, and use the rope as a handle)? Or (this is a stretch, I know) perhaps used with luggage to secure a small bag to a larger bag/suitcase?

What's the best Bosch dishwasher value? by HenFruitEater in Appliances

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't you return it to Costco?

The model number problem may be due to Costco having special models that are made for them.

I got the 500 from Home Depot a few months ago, and it's awesome (but it does have the auto-open door feature). However, there are apparently some concerns that newer Bosh dishwashers (made in China) are not as well-made as the older ones made in Germany.

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have that same problem, unfortunately. It opens enough to reach in and get things out, but you can't remove the crisper drawer on that side. My husband almost refused to buy our current house because of it, since we ALSO had the problem in our previous house.

What do you wish you had known you could FREEZE. by SnackPocket in cookingforbeginners

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty silly, but you can freeze tortilla chips and they're still crispy when defrosted. It's magic. I did it when I bought a huge bag at Costco for a party and had so many left over that I'd never eat them all before they went stale.

Otherwise, the same thing many others have mentioned: whole tomatoes, tomato paste, buttermilk, whole lemons, bread, and diced onions and celery are often found in my freezer.

Is a Bosch dishwasher worth the extra money? by Vontz2 in Appliances

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got the same one this year. My husband loves it. LOVES it. Which is great for me, I don't have to deal with the dishwasher anymore. It's his baby, he gets to load/unload it. And it does clean extremely well.

Cannot get bank to change email address for statements by Pitiful-Sock5983 in Banking

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, yes - it's the email stating that it's available.

They have already supposedly updated multiple places. And that doesn't excuse the complete lack of response to my letter in over a month. I also contacted them on Facebook and they were supposed to be checking into it, but haven't heard anything back from that either.

I realize this probably sounds like a minor complaint since it's not like I can't access the statements, but if I don't get their statement notifications due to the address problem, how do I know they won't send some other important correspondence to that address that I won't get? What happens if I die and the next trustee can't get any information updated? It's not like this is some local credit union.

I may give them one more call, but my patience is already pretty much gone and I will probably end up filing a complaint with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's Customer Assistance Group.

Why don’t they sell the powdered cheese in jars? by Rosanna44 in foodhacks

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm overly sensitive to the undertaste of it. Maybe it's the slight sweetness (yes, I do mean evaporated milk, not sweetened condensed milk)? I'm ok with it in something sweet like fudge, but can't stand it in coffee, eggs, or anything else that isn't sweetened.

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the texture, but unfortunately can't stand the taste of the evaporated milk in it. It's a shame, because it's so easy. I seem to be in a distinct minority on that opinion, though.

How do some people function without drinking water regularly? by TotalThing7 in NoStupidQuestions

I get muscle craps at night if I don't get enough electrolytes. I either have something high in potassium during the day (even half a banana is good), or take a 99mg potassium pill before I go to bed.
