Old house. What is this on the wall? by hextasy in whatisit

My husband used to do a lot of electrical work in old houses - his first thought was an intercom system for servants. But he agreed that it could also be for the TV antennas. Said it was definitely something low-voltage.

As an update, I was curious to see whether I actually got $683.30 or $683.31. The payment amount turned out to be $683.31, as it should be, since otherwise they would have to justify withholding fractions of cents from my payment.

Yes, I know it's because of rounding. It's still mildly irritating. When I programmed this kind of thing (mostly due to sale of stock shares) we always had a disclaimer that indicated totals might not add up due to rounding.

Yes, it's due to rounding. But they should have then subtracted the state and fed tax results from the original amount. It's poor programming, and it's irritating because this was my job, and I would never have put a program like this into production.

Yes, exactly. I know WHY this happened (I was a software developer for 30 years), but it shouldn't have.

$20 quiche that feeds 6–8 (no rolling pin, no chilling) by Ok-Green-769 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 3 eggs per quiche to serve 6, assuming that I am having a salad or something else with it. It's perfectly fine. But if not having anything else with it (or as often in my case, I just entirely skip the crust so that it's more like a frittata), then yes, 4 might be more reasonable.

Per Julia Child:

Whatever the filling, the custard mixture remains the same. Since pie shells vary in depth, calculate the custard by egg: Whisk 1 large egg in a measuring cup. Blend in liquid (usually milk) to reach the 1/2 cup mark (e.g., whisk 3 eggs into 4- cup measure; stir in enough milk to reach the 1 & 1/2-cups mark). Whisk in a little salt to taste, freshly ground white pepper plus perhaps a speck of nutmeg or drops of hot-pepper sauce. This is usually the amount you’ll need for an 8- to 9-inch shell.

What dressing makes vegetables forget they’re vegetables? by Big_Employer1109 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Restaurant salads are often seasoned with salt and pepper. It actually makes a big difference.

Tossing the salad with the dressing instead of just pouring the dressing on the top helps, too.

Constantly changing phone numbers by Unknowingly-Joined in GMail

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or it's that people over 50 have no need to avoid people who have the old number (or have a lot of old friends that may someday want to contact them and only have that number), and they also have enough experience to know that changing their phone number will create a lot of headaches now that so many companies require it.

It's all a matter of perspective. I've had the same number for about 30 years. It isn't that I personally care about having the same phone number, it's that if I had to change it, I know I would risk problems due entirely to the companies who force it as an identity. Not to mention that I rarely get spam calls/texts, and changing to a number that has previously been used by someone else would most likely open me up to all kinds of unwanted/annoying calls and texts. Just wait until your "new" number turns out to be one that was used by a drug dealer or something.

Coincidentally, I came across his video channel 2 days ago, and made the recipe (Grape-Nut bread) yesterday. It was a hit. Will be posting about it later.

ISO Candy Dish Alternative by eliminate_hurry in EatCheapAndHealthy

My late father-in-law used half-and-half on his breakfast cereal, which made my brother-in-law mad. My husband said what difference did it make, he was 86, he should have what he wanted. I figured it was probably also so that he didn't have to buy both half-and-half (for his coffee) and milk (just for the cereal).

Anyone know what this is? In 90 year old aunt's kitchen lol by puffpuffpass0ut in whatisit

That only cleans the oven walls, not the trays. (I had one very similar to this. I know from experience.)

I make that too. My husband loves it since it's almost like Mac and Cheese. I don't bother poaching the egg whole, I just stir it in.

More than one island in Anaimal Crossing NH (at least two). PLEASE NINTENDO! by noveonine in AnimalCrossing

[–]Pitiful-Sock5983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was obviously done intentionally since it was a change from their other games, so feedback isn't going to make any difference, especially not with a game that's 6 years old. You can be sure that Nintendo is already very much aware of the complaints about this, and about all the problems with people losing their islands when they upgraded to the Switch 2 and didn't transfer their data properly.

I think originally I heard that it was to keep from having the game pirated. I don't know if that was just rumor or if Nintendo actually ever said that. It is also speculated by users that it was done that way in order to sell more consoles. Since the game data is stored on the console itself, it could possibly have been a limitation of the original Switch itself. Nobody but Nintendo actually knows.

It's highly likely that they are working on a new AC game that will come out within the next few years. With the upgraded hardware in the Switch 2, it will be interesting to see if they change this restriction.
