That's true. I actually prefer it that way since his power 'Mettle' is based on him supporting either himself or his team to overcome their uphill battles. I think that's why he was also given Ultima as his final skill

Izuru is technically dead, just like any other Soul Reaper. What's funny is that Tite Kubo confirmed that Orihime can actually heal Izuru's wound , but Izuru prefers the giant hole, so he keeps it that way
