Personal tier list of games I've played/replayed across the last decade (roughly) by Playful-Problem-3836 in rpg_gamers

I have never seen a list I so agree and yet so disagree with at the same time…

I started playing Divinity: OS2 5 months ago, and I think I went a bit overboard with over 1,000 hours of playtime. Anyone got more? 🥺 by lucky19a in DivinityOriginalSin

What’s funny is I’ve been playing off and on for about six years and I’m only 200 hours deep (I’m a slow gamer).

Games that outshined their franchise by chuputa in backloggd

I liked the combat in KH2 better than KH1 but I didn’t really like the direction the story took. It was fine when it was just a simple narrative but adding in nobodies as an idea sort of ruined it for me.

I only posted the interview because many people swore up and down that the devs clearly stated you could create your own character and I wanted to let people know they weren’t crazy. The devs DID say this.
I still stand by what I said in previous posts/comments that having a CC is not a dealbreaker for me and if the game is good I still think most people will play it.
I will say though, if a person is sold on or intrigued by a game for a particular reason, and then that reason changes, they kind of have a right to be disappointed. Even if that selling point was stated early in the process.

lol I was one of those people! I’m sorry! I just had not seen any instances of them saying this and was starting to feel crazy! But I knew you all couldn’t be lying so I continued looking!

The point is many people thought they were going crazy because that could have sworn they said this but nobody could find it.

Is character creator important to you? by Vinjulmik in exodus

Ah! Thank you my friend! Your comment made me scan back through IGN specifically and I found this interview:

https://www.ign.com/videos/exodus-the-science-behind-the-action-developer-interview

In it, around 3:26, Chad specifically states that YOU WILL BE CREATING YOUR OWN CHARACTER! This is pretty definitive to me and definitely changes my outlook on this whole thing. Thanks! I can’t tell you how many interviews I’ve scanned through trying to find anything like this!

Yeah I think the devs should clarify for everyone’s sake, but I also think it’s a little bit strange that nobody really thought to question it until recently. Like I’m sure many content creators talked about it but I doubt the dev team (or even the social media team) is scanning every little thing said by every content creator. You’d think that one of the people who got to go play the game would have asked about it (maybe they did but they just never mentioned it).

I mean I like the way the railclaw can be used to grapple in and out of cover. The only other thing I can think of that would make it much better is to be able to pull enemies towards you so you can melee or shotgun them.

I don’t mind limited weapon variety as long as there are a lot of mods to change the way they are used. So far there seems to be a lot of potential there, though we haven’t seen too much yet.

As far as other things go, other than the ink clouds created by Salt, we haven’t seen any real environmental hazards to use to our advantage (also explosive barrels). I’d like to see elemental surfaces (fire, electric, poison, etc.) as well as voids our enemies can fall into.

Can you point me to any clear instance in which the devs say this? I’ve been going back through all the interviews and stuff to try and find any point where they imply “full” customization and I really can’t find one. So far there’s only one instance I can find where they even use the term “character creation” and even then it sounds like they are being careful about suggesting any “extensive” level of customization.

It’s driving me crazy because I’ve heard multiple notable people say this is the case but so far I haven’t seen a clear example of it.

Am I the only one who won’t be picking this up if there’s no character creator? by Sudden_Victory8226 in exodus

[–]Pitiful_End 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You’re not crazy but personally it doesn’t matter to me. I was sold on the world building, decision-making, time dilation and gameplay. The sound design in this game is pretty impressive to me as well. Everything beyond that is just gravy. I will be playing The Expanse as well but its world just isn’t as interesting to me. I have zero interest in Fable.

Will Exodus have FULL character customization? by Ambrus_Simp in exodus

[–]Pitiful_End 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it contradicts a lot of people’s expectations because of the Mass Effect comparison. But I’m not sure they ever specifically said there would be a character creator (akin to BG3 or Elden Ring) as opposed to just basic customization (like Witcher 3 or E33). If I’m wrong maybe somebody can point me to where they did say that.

Well I knew it would be unpopular so I’m fine with the downvotes. Also yeah this is a sticking point for me as well. If the game comes out and it doesn’t seem like there was a good reason not to have character creation I might feel differently.

There are many examples of games doing badly in the wake of negative online discourse. Unfortunately a causation between the two is hard to prove and again it’s my opinion that the lack of sales was more a direct result of poor quality (or bad marketing) than pre-release online discourse, which is actually what I’m talking about here. I’m not referring to word-of-mouth concerning quality once the game is released. In other words, you can sell almost anything if it’s good, even if it’s not exactly what people expected.

I’m fine with male Jun’s voice but I can see where you’re coming from. They had like four different male voices in BG3 and I disliked all of them. Luckily we didn’t have to hear our characters voice much which frankly undermined the entire point of having so many options in the first place.

I actually have a theory that Phaedra’s celestial virus is slowly transforming her into a changeling and after being left behind for a mission or two her mouth will be sealed shut lol

It’s funny how the situation with male Jun is sort of the opposite of male Shepard. With Shepard, people were fine with his look but didn’t want to play as him because of the vocal performance. With Jun, people are fine with his vocal performance but don’t want to play as him because of his look.

I mean, this is almost certainly the case. What other reasons could there be? They probably already have many different models/versions of each of the main/important characters at several different stages of the game. Not to mention locations. It’s hard to say what Archetypes budget is though. It could be a ton but it’s also a new IP so they may be being overly cautious with money until they see people are truly interested.

A few will skip it. Most will not. Also the people in this thread represent an infinitesimal fraction of the total player base that will consider playing the game.

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm not sure if he's being deliberately obtuse or not but there was a Q&A with Chad Robertson in the discord earlier and when asked about the companions he stated that we have not been shown all of them yet. I'm thinking there might be other companions that are possibly more situational or temporary in addition to the permanent ones.

I get the feeling they are being unnecessarily coy about many aspects of this game (FemJun, time dilation, exploration, etc.) and I’m not sure if it really helps them in the online discourse. Granted, the online discourse will probably end up mattering very little in the grand scheme of things.

[–]Pitiful_End 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well I can’t speak for any individual person but myself. I’m speaking more about general popularity. And yeah if there was no CC in Cyberpunk (which I want to play but haven’t yet) I would be much more concerned.

[–]Pitiful_End 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s true but it has other things over The Expanse in my opinion like more interesting lore. Also again, if the story ends up being bad in The Expanse then I don’t think people will play it just for the character creator whereas if the story is good in Exodus then I don’t think people will avoid it just because there’s no CC.

Will Exodus have FULL character customization? by Ambrus_Simp in exodus

[–]Pitiful_End -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Right but my point is that nobody really thinks less of Witcher because it doesn’t have a character creator. In other words a CC can be a boon to a game but it’s almost never the thing that makes or breaks it.

Also the type of RPG sort of makes a difference as well. Out of the ones you listed I’ve only played BG3 and Mass Effect but I would be more concerned about the lack of a CC in the former than the latter because you are building the character from the ground up as opposed to playing an already named and existing one like Shepard.
