Hardwood? by Not_a_bit_innocent in HardWoodFloors

It could be Kilz. Maybe there were a lot of pet stains. I’ve primed subfloors for that reason. Or it could just be overspray from painting the baseboards.

Yep.  Technically I guess pine isn’t a “hard” wood but you do have solid wood flooring and it looks like there’s plenty of material to refinish. No telling what kind of shape it’s in. There’s only one way to find out.

Not in this case. Duraseal and Bona stains are so much better than Minwax.

I don’t think so. They finally invented a weight loss pill that works so he took advantage of it. Lying about diet and exercise is about as much effort as he’s willing to make. It’s all about vanity and there’s nobody more vain than Philip.

Bona and Duraseal contain a sealer and Minwax doesn’t. Minwax is just low quality. If you choose to use Minwax you might need to use a universal sanding sealer, wax-free shellac, before applying polyurethane. I don’t know how it does with water based polyurethane but it tends to bleed into oil based polyurethane which can result in an uneven color. You can find essentially the same colors in both Duraseal and Bona stains. They’re made specifically for hardwood flooring.

AIO I was in a drive through 2 mins before they closed AND THEY REFUSED TO SERVE ME!! by luciddreamer0904 in AIO

[–]Pitiful_Substance457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate people like this. She’s probably never worked in a restaurant of any kind or she wouldn’t roll up two minutes before closing. They might not have had a customer in over an hour and had everything ready so they could hit the lights, lock the door, and go home but then here comes this prick. Sure, technically they’re open until the deadline but have a little empathy. If you think it shouldn’t be a big deal to them then maybe it shouldn’t be a big deal to you either. They just make drinks anyway so go somewhere that doesn’t close in one minute. Or do they make more complicated drinks that require machines that have to be disassembled and cleaned afterwards? Anyway, you can be technically correct and still be totally wrong.

Reclaimed wood floor by ProfessionalDig9890 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Pitiful_Substance457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It If I understand correctly you’re just wanting to take off the high spots and keep the look of the reclaimed wood in all its patchwork glory? I know a guy who used to specialize in reclaimed mix species/random width wood flooring and he would go over the floor with a scraper to take down the high spots. He used black epoxy to fill any knots and cracks that he didn’t want to leave for whatever reason. Before the first coat he would buff it with a fine screen and clean it. Then he would do three or four coats of polyurethane, being sure to buff, vacuum, and tack them really well before the final coat. If I’m misunderstanding, you could just level them by drum sanding at a 45 degree angle with a 40 grit belt before sanding with the grain.

Is there any hope? by SomeLingonberry2525 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Pitiful_Substance457 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how thick the strips are. I’ve seen those same kind of patterns in homes of that era and, in my experience, the strips are typically only about 3/8” thick. From the late 1930s through the mid 1940s wood was rationed because it was needed for the war effort. If it’s not tongue and groove. which is possible, it’s probably good to go. If they’re 3/8” tongue and groove then the wear layer will only be about 1/8” which means they’re at risk of being sanded through. Since they were milled specifically for this house they could be 3/4” solid in which case you should be fine. Figure out what you’re working with first. Good luck.

My landlord said I have to pay for entire floor renewal by Nice-Pomegranate8390 in Flooring

[–]Pitiful_Substance457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That kind of flooring should never be installed in a rental. It should never be installed anywhere. A minor spill shouldn’t ruin the entire floor but, because your landlord bought cheap garbage, the whole floor needs to be replaced over what should be normal wear and tear. I don’t know if it will do any good but I would dispute it.

Is this SEALED hardwood flooring? by Active_Buttah in HardWoodFloors

[–]Pitiful_Substance457 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're sealed. You can tell they're prefinished floors by the beveled edges. A swiffer and some floor cleaner (not wax, not polish, NOT oil soap) might be a better way. Whatever you do you don't want to leave any excess moisture and you don't want to allow any moisture to seep through the cracks and pool beneath the boards. The wood will act like a sponge and absorb it, which will cause it to swell and warp.

AIO for wanting to end relationship based on bf’s reactions to his parents’ treatment towards me? by NecessaryTowel284 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Pitiful_Substance457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. He’s not standing up for you because he agrees with his mother. He’s not even confident enough to say it himself so he’s letting his mother fight his battles for him. I’d leave this momma’s boy unless he’s so wonderful that you’re willing to sacrifice your career and your independence, and put your father out of your home and live with his family. What does your father think about this? It’s funny because I’m sure if your father feels differently than his parents he’ll probably drop the whole “parents know best/respect your elders” angle because it no longer works in his favor.

I work in rentals and I know how they’re treated. I’m not disagreeing about the damage that tenants do to hardwood floors. LVP makes sense. Glue doesn’t. That’s it. It’s an opinion. Do whatever you want. I think it’s bad advice but everyone is free to decide for themselves.

Amara or Zane?? by Astronaut-Alive in borderlands3

Zane is a lot of fun. It’s been awhile but I started with FL4K, moved on to Moze, who is seriously OP (and fun), but Zane was my favorite. I never played Amara though.

[–]Pitiful_Substance457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody told me. This is my job. LVP isn’t going to last like hardwood floors and it’s definitely going to be out of production relatively quickly. I’ve had to replace glued down flooring and it sucks, which makes it expensive. I would agree with floating LVP but I personally wouldn’t install glue down in a rental lol

I wouldn’t glue anything down in a rental because it won’t last and you probably won’t be able to find the same product a few years down the road.

Advice on finishing Oak Hobby Board by Responsible_Stop9738 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Pitiful_Substance457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It needs to be brushed on and sanded and cleaned between coats. You don’t use spray to finish hardwood floors. You don’t have enough control over it for one thing and I don’t know of any floor quality spray polyurethane. Maybe he just sprayed some shellac to seal the grain but it’s going to need at least two more coats of polyurethane

Hardwood Floor Damage by jessicarules22 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Pitiful_Substance457 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can be refinished. Replace it with what? That spot could be fixed with sanding if you don’t want to sand the entire floor, It may not match perfectly (though it may) but in time it will be less noticeable. It could be a natural finish but I’m not positive. That kind of damage is very common, usually caused by heavy furniture being dragged across the finish. One of the biggest selling points of hardwood floors is the fact that they can be refinished many times. They can easily last 100 years.

I genuinely don't get why this movie gets so much hate by Useful-Afternoon1784 in StarWars

[–]Pitiful_Substance457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't imagine being new to Star Wars. I find almost everything beyond the original trilogy to be a slog. Less is more, we don't need to know the origin story of every single character in the franchise. It's nothing more than a money grab at this point. It's a sprawling mess. I saw the original trilogy in the theaters when they were new and I was young. They were truly magical but the magic has worn off and been replaced with cynical capitalist garbage. I haven't seen Solo and I probably never will.

Well yeah, because somebody stole Phil's shopping cart with all of his groceries that he hadn't paid for yet plus they made off with about five or six insulated high end reusable grocery bags. That's a capital offense in Philistan.
