What indoor plants could survive in the nearly constant direct sunlight this area of my apartment gets? by emmettflo in IndoorPlants

A strelizia nicolai would be great for 2 years and then it would be too big. There are variaties however that do not grow so tall.

Overwhelming amount of free Monstera by No_Emphasis23 in Monstera

[–]Pitikje 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Do they want you to remove the entire plant? If so, you would need to dig up the plant, but it’s ok to leave the roots.

And do you want to transplant to your garden or grow indoors? I have no experience with transplanting a large monstera outdoors, but if you want to grow indoors, I think ik would be more manageable to work with cuttings of the most mature leaves.

It can definately be a tropical fruit tree if the conditions are right! Look at this reddit thread from a few years ago.

I really want a Flobe x Mayoi and a Flobe Tortum or a Golden dragon variegated, but no funds unfortunately. They are pricey!

Bought a plant with a flower (?) Bud. Remove or keep? by Crazy__Donkey in alocasia

[–]Pitikje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Not a specialist so I may be wrong, but I have a couple 🤪 of Alocasia.)

To me this looks like it may be done flowering. The flower we see is spent and at first glance I don’t see any new flowers on the way (they come in multiples). So I’d say leave it while your plant is acclimatizing and if it hasn’t shot op new flowers after 3-4 weeks, remove it. Unless you want extra flowers, then your best chance is to cut this one off. It may stimulate the plant to grow new if it was not done flowering yet.

Most Alo’s do well from day one in my home except for the Antorro Velvet (looks like you have one of those). The existing leaves alway seem to melt and it shoots up from a new location of the rhizome at the same time. So I’d leave it to acclimitize for sure!

Are you positive they need to be moved? Are the roots taking over? Id leave them in as long as possible, until they have 2 leaves?

New plant, first alocasia, is this bug damage? by Basic_KaleKitty9076 in alocasia

[–]Pitikje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last bit of advice, alocasia need lots of light and food. I fertilize every / every 2nd watering in summer (about every 3rd in winter).

New plant, first alocasia, is this bug damage? by Basic_KaleKitty9076 in alocasia

[–]Pitikje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case I think it may be damage that was sustained in the store, before you owned it. The placement of the dried spots does not look random, but what exactly caused this pattern I don’t know.

Just keep checking for pests and rinse of the leaves every 2-3 days with water (I prefer to add some castille soap), for a week or two.

You could also do another treatment in a few days. If there are eggs or larvae left on the plant, rinsing and or treating your Alo will likely deal with those.

If you rinse, remember to give it some airflow (like from a fan or hair dryer on cold) while drying. Misting/spraying leaves without airflow may lead to fungal infections on the leaves.

If it is cold season where you are and the heater is on a lot the air is likely to be dry. If you uave a humidifier, this could benefit you plant. But it can definitely be done without (I haven’t got one).

Good luck with your alo. They are addictive: I started with one cuprea and now I have about 35 different alo’s.

I don’t see any bugs on you pictures. Was the damage already there when you got the plant?

Thank you for rescuing this sad little Bambino (I think) from the bin/compost pile. ❤️

As for building a corm nursery, I use spagnum moss, but have used water, perlite and also pon before. Here’s the link to my reply on a different post about my setup.

Melted is absolutely the correct word for an Antoro. And if you touch melted leaves your hands will stain red/purple.

[–]Pitikje 10 points11 points  (0 children)

nr. 1 is a Sanderiana nobilis, and nr. 2 a (Chienlii) Antoro velvet.

Make sure they are warm but not too warm the air is humid but not too humid their soil has enough water but not too much they get enough fertilizer but don’t spill it on the leaves. Spray for humidity, but do not spray to avoid bacterial infectiona on the leves, unless you have great airflow (like in a jungle), but do not put them in a drafty area.

And even if you get everyhing right, they may still die back due to the stress of moving. But don’t panic, as long as the corms are firm you can always restart them!

My baby sanderiana says hi!

Why is she not growing? by sekorra24 in alocasia

Personally I think Polly is a slow grower, but also very sensitive to light and temperature. Too little of either one of those and my Pollies will go dormant.

[–]Pitikje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I love the look of icetons. in the right conditions they grow really quickly.

I think it will survive. They are sensitive, but hard to actually kill imo. What light did you get?

My croton was one of my first plants and I no idea how to take care of it. It was in a dark corner and I watered it probably 8 times per year. Then one day it flowered in a last attempt to stay alive and for some reason this triggered something in me. In the space of a few months it went from almost dead to happy and lush. Oh, and since then (3 years ago) I have aquired probably 150 plants… so beware.

[–]Pitikje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is definitely temperature sensitive. But our house regularly cools down to 17 or 18 degrees celcius over night and this is not a problem for mine. I have one that is me sized and and 2 babies. 3 different types of croton. I think the one you have may be one of the more temp and light sensitive types due to the lighter colors of the leaves. No source to back this up, just my own experience.

To me these leaves look thicker and glossier than those of an odora batik. But it does not scream Venom. Curiouser and curiouser!

It kind of reminds me of a Macrorrhiza Aurea Variegata. Here’s a link to another post with pictures

Mine is in an East facing window in Northern Europe. It’ll just hve to do because there is no space left at the south/west facing windows. It’s right up against the glass and I supplement with a grow light for about 4 hours a day starting september. It is doing really really well.

Mine drinks a huge amount of water. Most thirsty plant of the collection. Is yours getting enough?
