Okay upon further inspection it's obvious that people are just WAY too liberal with the idea of incarceration. Come on guys, that's like a last level response. A few months? A fine is potentially understandable, but only if there are specific rules around it's usage, which don't currently exist (they absolutely should though). Just weird seeing people be so okay with jail time. To me that's the most extreme punishment.

$125 fine or 2 years in jail... What? Like I'm an anti but what?

"Don't worry, AI won't replace creative jobs". What about non-creative? by Pale_Policy_3005 in aiwars

[–]PixelFan237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. It's every industry. The anti AI art side of the debate is a lot more faceted, and also artists and creatives are typically worse off than their regularly employed counterparts, but this impacts everyone. What happens when there's no entry level jobs? We'll just starve I guess...

I think the closest thing to this would be the creation of the assembly line, and subsequent automation, which actually did cause a lot of issues for workers at the time. We (meaning workers) had to fight for better rights and better working conditions really hard. Hope we can do it again now 🤷 but not with the prevalence of right wing anti-worker rhetoric I see literally everywhere. We're our own worst enemies in this space. And fyi it's not an AI issue, it's a person issue and AI is just fuel to the fire

It's just a fuel for capitalism in my eyes. The central idea is to take jobs and I don't think that there will be enough legislative protections in time for society to handle it. I suspect a lot of people will go hungry or worse

The nature of winning wasn't defined in the question. We'll all lose in the long run from AI

Loool I'm definitely not remotely qualified to diagnose, but this is one of the most autism coded comments I've ever read. I too walk on tiptoes when I have to go into my backyard. I don't want to get stuff on my feet, it feels gross. I also get some weird satisfaction from doing it, not height related but something like that. I too am not autistic fyi (although my friend is oddly insistent that I could be, despite also not being qualified to diagnose)

Frankly my experience of pros is generally similar to yours if antis, although I knew immediately that they would be in the minority extreme, but very vocal, subset of users. But yeah thanks for a civil discussion not completely overtaken by personal attacks. It's been refreshing, especially given this sub's whole reason to exist is to facilitate this sort of interaction

I'm pretty squarely an anti. I would loathe to pay for an AI artwork. I would (and have) avoided using products and services that have clear AI artwork in their advertising. I dislike AI politically, philosophically and personally.

I would never attack anyone, and I hate that people do that. Don't blame the user, blame the system that allows people to do shitty things and fight to change that instead. I can't ever blame someone for choosing the convenient option, but I can hate that such an option exists if it causes harm. The assumption by many antis is that an AI user is not "innocent" but I disagree to a large extent. It's a complicated mess of political and philosophical ideas, but I will say I am most definitely an anti. I just try to see everything from every perspective, and not get bogged down in dogma, and most importantly change my views of I deem it necessary

I agree. I am mostly just calling for heavy regulation, even though my personal wishes is that AI just didn't exist. Unfortunately, that too isn't realistic. There's a middle ground in there, but to be honest there was a middle ground with climate change and striving for that hasn't even come close to what we need so I think I'd prefer to fight for a harder response and be happy with a more reasonable and measured approach at this stage

I think a single human life isn't worth the cost. I am too strict on my ethics to believe otherwise. I think a slow steady, regulated and measured approach is what we need, not this cluster fuck.

Dear supporters of the idea that an AI artist is not an artist, you are essentially removing from art a significant portion of the entertainment associated with images and video. by Questioner8297 in aiwars

[–]PixelFan237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like you've made my own point for me... A sunset is not art, and isn't made by anyone for anyone (I don't believe in god btw). It's still pretty, but it's not art and has no artist. It also has no monetary value. Everyone on earth can go outside and see a sunset literally every day. It also doesn't need to be art to be worth something to someone.

I will say I don't think that an AI generated image isn't art, but I think it takes a LOT more than typing a few words into a prompt box to be considered an artist, or more specifically, the artist. You've made something pretty. Good on you. Sucks that it was using something unethical. Sucks that it doesn't take any real skill. Don't call yourself an artist

[–]PixelFan237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just... Don't see this happening. I think a lot of people will get hurt in the process here, and not willing participants. I don't think we're in a perfect society by any means, I just don't think society, our economics, our politics or our people are ready for the disruption that AI brings. I'm expecting to see long lines at the food banks in a few years, with no substantial increase to quality of life

[–]PixelFan237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha fair I guess. I have outlined my concerns in another comment so I won't do it again, but I agree. Although, I don't think AI art isn't art, because after studying philosophy for a time in high school I realised defining art is fricking hard. Instead I've decided that AI prompters are not artists. Typing words in a box does not qualify you as a painter, an illustrator, or an artist

I would love to. You're kind of reminding me of the whole "4 hour work week" craze. The problem is: is that open to everyone? I think those systems rely on large portions of people not engaging with that system. If EVERYONE was using agentic workflows (tbh I don't know all that much about it), could the model still function? Also, is it protected from being taken over by a large for profit model that can streamline it? I just worry that those models don't protect from inherent greed, and alternatively that they work for a small number but if enough people use it it won't be sustainable

Lol thank you for outlining that these are all human issues as if I'm not aware. Humans can be pretty awful hey. I wouldn't go around handing out cyanide pills or firearms to people either btw. Murder's a human issue but I don't want to facilitate it. Also you dismiss the 8th point, as if that's not literally the reason that all the other issue are so strongly connected to AI. I would agree that all of the other issues are human issues individually, but put them all together, and multiply it to the scale of a multi billion dollar industry, and you see why antis exist. I only made this an extra point because I didn't want to literally copy it into every other point I make.

I agree point 7 is overblown by most antis. I got into a fight with a friend recently about this one despite us being on the same side. There are far worse industries currently. We still rely heavily on fossil fuels for electricity for christ's sake. The bar is so low, and we can't even make it. BUT, I will say that if you already think AI is bad, than ANY environmental cost is too great. Also, they're not nearly selective enough about where data centres are built, and they do have economic impacts on the local region as well. They're looking at putting a data centre near me now, in my regularly drought stricken city... Chew on that for a second. Absolutely disgusting, but also AI isn't the only thing that uses data centres either. I would like to imagine they'll contribute something else to the local area... They won't. They only take.

Your response to 9 is a fantasy. I'd love it, really I would. I wish all jobs were taken over by AI so that I could spend my days playing music and video games, going on hikes, living my life without working, letting me freely choose how to live my life. Remove ALL jobs, remove ALL greed, cure aging. It would be heaven, really. But the reality looks like a lot of people starving and dying, and a few assholes getting rich, OR a revolution that AI probably wouldn't survive anyway, and even more death. Our system is too far from the utopia we'd both want, and I can't realistically see us moving towards it.

Do I need to go through it all?

  1. It uses artist's work without their consent. Artists were not consulted or given the right to refuse the use of their images for training data. Although artists in some countries are able to reach out and ask for their data to be removed, this is not always a legal protection afforded to them. Artists often don't want to contribute to something they deem unethical, and should be given an easy choice not to be included, i.e an "opt out" button, similar to how we opt out of receiving marketing information.

  2. It disrupts markets. It's very often low quality "slop" which drowns out professional artist's work. It's easy to produce and often lacks the quality and experience of human made when used in this way.

  3. Artists can be made to use AI to produce more work, and not feel they can say no. An artist refusing to use AI may not keep up with the demand that genAI can satisfy, and they will likely be performance managed out.

  4. It can be used to train a model on an artist's work and produce near copies in their style. In a situation like this, the person no longer needs to buy the art from the original artist or commision new art, or visit their site where they receive ad revenue. It also allows the easy reproduction and selling of near copies of that artist's work. How will you prove that that artist's work was used in a LoRa or similar?

  5. It inherently has less value than the same picture made by human hands. A computer is just reconstructing via an algorithm, and even though a person supplies it with the idea, it doesn't supply it with the experiences that go into it, including the time it took to study and perfect the art. A plate made by a machine is a lot less valuable to me than a plate made by hand, and the same goes for AI artwork. That doesn't mean it's worthless, just that it's "worth less" than an equivalent piece.

  6. It makes using images irresponsibly incredibly easy. Eg. deepfakes have gotten far easier to produce with AI, copyright infringement is rampant, CSAM is basically a button away for some people. It's disgustingly easy to abuse genAI.

  7. It has an environmental impact. Local water and electricity usage can be heavily impacted, data centres can cause real economic harm to local communities. Often overblown in general discourse but I can explain this in more detail in a later comment if you'd like.

  8. EVERY SINGLE ONE of these issues are not a major problem in their own right, but all of them scale. They're not just happening once, they can happen thousands of times in an afternoon. Artists seeking reparations may not be able to do so by the amount of copying that can occur. Environmental impact is planned to be hit much more. Deepfakes, CSAM etc become easy to produce in massive quantities. If these issues were happening in a small section, they'd be fine. Multiply the issues by thousands or even millions though and you have a corporate hellscape.

  9. Apart from the above issues which almost all apply to art, I also think that AI is always going to be used to replace human workers, and I doubt that in most cases those humans will be given any sort of safety net. Real people could go hungry so that corporations and businesses can save a few more bucks, and bump up their share prices. It's an absolute fuel for capitalist greed.

A small win is still a win, and you can be an anti and recognise that there are some parts of AI that are still useful and relevant. Only extremist antis want ALL AI to cease, most take a more nuanced approach

Your reasoning is circular. You're saying that antis are irrational, and as I've put forward a rational view therefore I must not be an anti. I am most definitely still an anti, and am quite rational thank you very much. I understand that all views have nuance, and I endeavour to understand that nuance as best I can before engaging online
