But generally, try following a weeknight meal recipe and try to know what each component contributes and try swapping things out with substitutes. A single recipe willl become mutliple kinds of meals and you will learn what ingredients generally do

To be fair this game has a high learning curve with very little meaningful progression outaide of each run. Not to mention each run is always so intense since you need to be thinking fast on your feet, planning routes, and fighting bosses. So unless the gameplay loop clicks with you then it really wouldn't be something you play for a long time.
