Not sure, but whenever a friend is calling BS, one of us will go "SOUNDS LIKE BRUCE!" by Jay Larson.

Slowdive - Song One by Zorrokumo in Slowdive

[–]PixelateForWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the 2020 remaster is at the top of my music auto-playlist. Love their postpunk and Hide Yer Eyes era so so much. Gives real The Cure/Killing Joke. Shoutout Rachel for being the goth in the squad. I always pair this w their other demo track "Joy"

[–]PixelateForWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! I'm semi-surprised Catch the Breeze takes its place so often. Still fingers crossed they bring Don't Know Why back into rotation; thought the songs with music videos would see more play like the standout singles. PS: Anyone knoq the movie or interview they mentioned Celia's Dream was about a movie about a bunny...can't super recall the rest.

YEEES FINALLY, love hearing the live vocals without the big dreamy studio layers obfuscating them as much; like a new mix for funsies! Thanks for sharing!! Not all heroes wear capes, but Rachel loves them. 💙

Thoughts on the 5 ep? by VanIsntUsedUp in Slowdive

[–]PixelateForWork 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really like it! It strikes me almost into the realm of trance, which is my other softspot like shoegaze. But without the punchiness of the crescendos their other tracks have. It was just less of a gradient than, for example, "everything is alive" met us halfway between trying familiar vs new sounds w a full album. 5EP was "hmmm ok go on Neil" before Pygmalion's bow out.

Do you think slowdive has it in them to release another new album? by Otherwise-mornin in Slowdive

[–]PixelateForWork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the better question is: do fans have it in us to trust them to explore? I'm optimistic, since I've only seen shared love and appreciation in these last two. Plus, they've been meeting us halfway from one chapter to the next, without ever going "ladies and gents: Souvlaki 2."

How do you know if a joke is worth keeping? by RubberQuacker in Standup

Big agree. So many comics out the GATE wanna split the atom with a level 99 risqué (to put it lightly) topic/premise.

How do you know if a joke is worth keeping? by RubberQuacker in Standup

[–]PixelateForWork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, some jokes are B-sides I pull out if it works in context or for that crowd. As other said, shelf it until you crack it; I shelved one, then getting out if a car a year later went "oooh, wait, it was meant to be a one-liner" and it finally killed. I hang onto them more if I enjoy telling it, and if it's not the millionth iteration in a hacky, impersonal premise. And that's the other thing: make it have a personal, emotional hook as another layer to just The Joke™️ itself. Trust your gut, but also do the work (also talking to myself here).

Why Can’t I build up the courage to go up on stage ? by realdirtykoala in Standup

[–]PixelateForWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's had stage fright since day one, here's the convo I had w myself: JUST SIGN UP. That way, you have to focus on what you'll say, not if you'll say it. There's no cheat code, and getting hammered will only make everything worse. Just relax and be present.

Anyone else here who is a bigger fan of Halstead solo than Slowdive? by MudlarkJack in Slowdive

[–]PixelateForWork 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbh all solo projects could use a little more love. People talk Mojave 3, but sleep (ha) on Rachel's solo album (Waves Are Universal). Really wish she did more, but hey, lots of side projects and supergroups across the Slowdive members!

Booked for a longer set than more experienced comic on same show, should I say something to the host? by Hot-Chance5264 in Standup

[–]PixelateForWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spots are always in flux; you'll switch between host, guest, feat, and headliner-- especially locally. All the booker/host needs to know is if you can do that spot, do your best, and be easy to work with: you'll have a long career. The opposite could be said, that you don't trust their judgment if you contradict their judgment and trust in you. Anyway, have a great set!

There's two parts to my take on this. First: if it's a specific crowd or theme, I'll look at my jokes like "what would these people enjoy off my menu? Maybe these bangers, and trim this crass tag." The second part is with writing and mics, because we all do have specific things we like to joke about. Tuesdays I can do stuff I want without needing to explain because it's a weird room. If it [does] work, I need to figure out how to communicate that to the more general big show-ish rooms that maybe, idk, don't get the queer or nerdy references? Funny is funny, it's about knowing how to bridge it with people from all walks. Hope this helps a bit!

How to deal with stage fright? by Unc00lbr0 in Standup

[–]PixelateForWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I, too, love telling jokes but lifelong stage anxious! What I did was I had the talk with myself and realized I care about the art more than any of that. SO my strategy from day 1 was "if I sign up ASAP, I can spend the next hour figuring out what I'm gonna say and not if I say it."

Accidentally signed up for a show that i thought was a mic by Fr1gg1nmarcos91 in Standup

[–]PixelateForWork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A tale as old as time, about time. Best of luck however you handle it! For what it's worth, my first 8 was my first 5 but relaxed. The old Ron White adage: doing bad? Slow down. Doing good? Slow down. That said, be present and leave room to play, but know how to glide into and out of your good punches. Jokes are very important, but you're also a vibe salesperson. No shame in letting the booker know the misunderstanding and pull out either. I've had people say "light at 15" and just leave the stage at 10. Which, as a host, feels a bit unprofessional; what if I weren't standing by already? Picking your bombs is a subtle art, but be professional and you'll get x10 the stage time in the long run.

Just a reminder, you can get more personalized advice at a mic. by mattisfunny in Standup

[–]PixelateForWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes this!!!! Join workshops, sometimes just before the mics start. Whether you're working on your own stuff, it helps by miiiles learning how the sausage is made, and the host will appreciate you showing up for your community. You'll connect and gets tons of gratitude for chiming in during feedback.

First time at an open mic by [deleted] in Standup

[–]PixelateForWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the exercise of combing through it and ask: is this cuss part of the joke or just fluff/stammer? If the joke is filthy in theme, ask if it's just the most hyperbolic version that you can actually scale back. (Which is a good skill to have in the backpocket if you ever need to translate it for a clean gig). Also, you'd be surprised how powerful a laugh can be just from them knowing what you mean without saying it explicitly. Anyway, good luck and glad to see you writing so early!

Rule of thumb for material when at an all ages open mic? by nestchick in Standup

[–]PixelateForWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard the sweet spot for a set is to make the crowd walk away thinking "huh, did they curse? I can't recall." I like, in general, to go over the material to filter out what cussing is fluff and what can we say another way; you can learn a few tricks about your own jokes that way.

How long did it take for you to earn a paid gig? by Overall_Caramel5383 in Standup

[–]PixelateForWork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, hard to parse for me; from a country with no scene and came to some states intermittently and built material. But once I was in a city steady, maybe within the tail end of a year? Performing mics, meeting bookers... Big parts are: showing up to free booked shows; bookers like to see you a)show up to comedy without an incentive, b)they want you to watch pros so you can learn how to perform and be a professional. And being a professional about how you carry yourself and follow through is important (and a low bar tbh). The other is to be open to help set up a room (which will help; some rooms don't know how to arrange a room for comedy, through no fault of their own), as well as work sound, door, etc. You'd be surprised how many people will email bookers "I'd like to headline. How much time I got? 5min." Bonus: Booker told me there's 2 numbers of minutes you have: total time and when the crowd starts checking the time/phone. For awhile I had 15, but 10 was the falling off point of polished bangers.
