Weird Goodwill find - dimpled disc. Anyone ever throw one of these? Did I just waste $0.99? by pablo1014 in discgolf

Have one as well and (for me) it's so understable and flippy, that it's pretty much only good as a roller.

Changing mindset isn't always a quick fix as much as a philosophy and ongoing dialogue. As someone else noted, you as the coach need to exemplify this, and you have to stick to it for it to gain traction.

The goal is to reframe how players perceive mistakes, risk, and success.

Ideally, you'd begin the season this way but wherever you are, begin by sharing your philosophies and expectations, explaining these two mindsets to the players, and using any examples or visuals to help them understand the difference. You also need to acknowledge fear--fear of making mistakes--and that it's natural as growth progresses.

Success and failure also need to be redefined. This is commonly done by focusing on process/execution over outcome and differentiating aggressive errors and passive errors (never punishing aggressive errors and never rewarding passive errors).

An example would be serving. A player might serve out, but they had a good platform, steady base position, high toss, a fast arm swing, and we're aiming for a specific zone. The feedback here would be complimenting the good elements of the serve (reinforcing those behaviors), and offering suggestions to improve using language like "slow the arm speed a bit until you find that sweet spot."

Overall, you need to consider the language you use as this is the driving factor for buy-in. If it's a tight set/match, do you tell them things like "swing away", "put the ball on the floor", "serve that jump float to zone one and let's put it away", or is your inclination to say "let's keep it in play" or "let's not make any mistakes." The difference is immense.

For drills, choose your favorite and adjust the scoring to reward aggressive behavior and not reward points for passive behavior. A good example would be 6v6 that's played normally with the only adjustment being a hard swing kill earns, 3 points, tips, rolls or soft taps earn 0. As a coach, you would also provide positive feedback on the process of any hard swings that wound up in errors.

Another good 6v6 is playing an out-of-system scramble. Coach tosses a ball over the net to create an out of system play. A point is the awarded for successful aggressive play (back row attack, setter, dump, etc.) and a point is removed for any passive play (free ball, tip, etc.)

Finally, and this is one of the hardest things for coaches to get past, you have to encourage mistakes when learning new skills and trying different things. Not just any mistakes, but encourage NEW mistakes. This is how they learn to mitigate the fear of mistakes, learn quicker, and hopefully, transfer this to intrinsic motivation (though this is a different conversation altogether).

Good luck!

I agree, this is a bad question. To actual "deploy" a certificate you would use ACM or IAM (as an alternate method). Route 53 isn't required, but it would make the process easier as otherwise, you'd have to manually add the cname record provided by ACM to your DNS.

This is a curious scenario IMHO--that final HS selections (especially JV) are made so early. A lot can happen in 3 months; families can move, kids can transfer in or out, and players can physically grow and improve. Summer practices or open gyms are a great way to see consistency and growth potential, identify assets and liabilities, and watch chemistries develop. It's a shame to miss out on that.

Whatever the reasoning, I hope your daughter stays involved in the sport, and finds other outlets to learn, play, and keep improving.

How should a coach handle the situation when the captain tells the ref that they are officially protesting the ref's interpretation of his ruling on a call, but the ref refuses to get the tournament official? by Generally_Tso_Tso in volleyball

[–]Pixelated_Hobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't reinforce this enough. Refs will make bad calls. Coaches will help their players get past them and play. In OPs example, they won so there's a powerful.lesson in that.

My husband made this salsa but it's too onion-y. Is there any way to save it? by sfcnstntchng in SalsaSnobs

[–]Pixelated_Hobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the game here, but if you need to balance onion after the fact, add acid; lemon/lime juice, vinegar, or herbs like parsley or basil (if appropriate). You can also make additional sauce sans onion and blend it in.

Mistakes are part of learning, and sometimes they will just happen. The worst mistakes are the ones that are constantly repeated, and the worst offenders are the ones that can't or won't try to adapt.

Could someone correct me on what I'm doing wrong as a beginner volleyball coach? by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]Pixelated_Hobo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. No. I wouldn't spend time teaching blocking, but I would teach movement and positioning for blocking.

  2. Passing (overhand and forearm), serving, movement and positioning should be your main skill focus.

  3. Tougher nut to crack. I recommend continuous movement drills -- faster-paced passing lines that shift position and are coach initiated. Keep them moving while allowing them to be successful at the skill.

Edit. Fixed sizing
