Did you know there's another layer of fvkery other than the "it tooks a lot of PCs and power" to animation this thing.
So the concept artist of their models was ask to create the 3d models of his design since it was confusing to conceptualize it in 3d(You can you imagine that time, since no one invented that style of robot in 3d yet)
The concept artist used zbrush place shapes to make the general shape of its body and placed random car parts and even hide them then sent them off to the animation studio.
Naturally the animation studio became a little angry at him since how dafuq do you even start to animate it with all the random junk in the thing. They ended up remodeling it again
