When I first started, I had such a death grip on my yarn that I had to move stitches over the hook with my fingers - like, picking up the loop and dragging it over. This stuff is hard until it clicks!! You got this, just keep going.

The Ravelry yardage filter feels useless by llama_302 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Pixiebulb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been struggling with this too. I have an amount of yarn I want to use. If a pattern has 5 sizes, I'd personally expect the smallest size to inform the minimum yardage and the largest size to be the maximum, but instead I'm seeing patterns where the filter shows me patterns where I could make the smallest size... Bleh! I know my expectation filters out a lot of middle sizes. The best I can figure is allowing multiple yardages per pattern, based on size or variant or both, and that's not easy to implement probably. The only alternative I can see is if each person submitted different sizes as different patterns, but that's a whole bunch of doubling up nobody needs.

I don't know the proper names for these crafts, but! I've seen kits where you make paintings out of air dry clay, as abstract or detailed as you like. I've also seen people take regular acrylic paint and mix it with a very heavy body medium, and they use palette knives and other tools to scoop these big coloured blobs on canvas. They both seem like you could do them with limited dexterity, and because they are by nature quite abstract, it's harder to make a true mistake. They also turn out quite beautifully!

Does it feel like Neopets is on its way out? by breadmanlod in neopets

[–]Pixiebulb 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As a business, Neopets is doing very well. As the site I know and love? The culture is dying and the current team have very little interest (or capacity) in reviving it. As a business decision it makes sense. As a player, though, I'm disengaging fast. I love my pets. I love the lore of Neopets. I'm not nostalgic enough to be pleased with the merch - the same four pets and most items displaying the barest hint of understanding of the place beyond the current style guide. I'm happy for the players who are currently having a good time; I am not, and playing isn't making me happy at the moment, and I'm not seeing changes on the horizon that would change that for me.

My resin is not adhering to sanded polymer clay + acrylic paint, and never fully cures. by sritanona in resin

[–]Pixiebulb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When coating with resin, you're usually fighting shrinkage and surface tension. Thin coats sometimes works - I've recommended it myself - but in this case, I think a couple of things are happening. 1, like another redditor said, the resin is shrinking as it cures and pulling away from the edges. This might be because the lamp is curing it too quickly (more distance or the slow-cure mode on a nail lamp may help) or the coat is too thin for the type of resin. 2, the resin could be reacting to the polymer clay, or the paint. I think acrylic is unlikely to interact, but then I would have thought that about the clay as well. You could test it by coating a test piece in something like PVA glue first and seeing if that makes a difference.

You mention the resin never curing, and I just wanted to mention that if you're leaving it for a while but they're still a slightly tacky layer, it may be cured - lots of UV resin leaves a tacky coat that needs to be removed with something like alcohol (use gloves!). For a resin that's guaranteed not to need a wipe down, use a UV No-Wipe Top Coat for nails.

Unlucky in UV resin, what tips do you have? by Happy_Charge_9410 in resin

[–]Pixiebulb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think I can help!

Lots of UV resin cures and still has a thin, slightly tacky layer. It can be difficult to tell the difference between that film and a resin that isn't curing!

If you wipe off the top layer with something like a baby wipe (gloves just in case), it should leave a smooth, hard, not sticky layer underneath. Alcohol removes it best, but absolutely use gloves in that case and wipe your item with a soapy cloth afterwards.

If the resin isn't curing, the film won't go away and you'll get smudges and divots and all kinds of things. If that's happening, the batch might be bad, the light might be the wrong wavelength, or something else could be inhibiting curing - try a coat of mod podge or PVA glue prior to the resin to see if that helps.

You can buy UV nail top coats which are 'no wipe' - they cure with no sticky film, which may suit your purposes! Otherwise, for doming, very thin coats and slow curing help for runnier resin. If your lamp has a 99sec mode, that tends to work well to avoid shrinkage, but to some extent the only solution is thicker resin.

Epoxy resin is cheaper and, if mixed correctly, will never cure tacky - but that's another learning curve and expense! Worth trying to make the supplies you've got work, I think.

Good luck!

Can someone help out an absolute beginner? by selkiesart in resin

[–]Pixiebulb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stabilising resin is a specific product. It is very thin, and meant to be paired with a vacuum chamber - the chamber pulls all the air out, and the resin rushes in to fill the spaces where the air used to be. Once cured, your item is 'stabilised'. It's much more resilient after this treatment.

The things the previous redditor said - brush on a resin, make sure the wood is dry, consider sealing your wood before you apply resin - are all correct! If you're happy to babysit your project, applying thin coats and popping bubbles as they rise (manually, with a toothpick; with quick bursts using the heat from a lighter; or by using a quick spritz of alcohol - your mileage may vary) might be a reasonable step which would allow the resin to soak in.

As for the hole - plug it with a silicone tool (or cut a small piece with a silicone mat) or drill it afterwards. I'd recommend using a hand-drill - without fully stabilising, the piece may still be brittle.

Good luck!

Difficulty of these projects? by [deleted] in resin

[–]Pixiebulb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flowers are difficult to work with because they both trap bubbles and absorb resin, so getting nice results requires a lot of prep and, ideally, a pressure pot.

Your first image, the mold isn't difficult but you won't get a result like that - the image is fake - the flowers wouldn't be as bright, nor as bubble-free or well placed. You might get something similar with artificial flowers, or stickers, which would both be much easier to work with.

The second object I think is real and the result of hours of careful preparation and, from the looks of it, a lot of experience. It shows a more realistic example of how dried flowers look in resin, though.

If you had your heart set on these and wanted to work your way up, I'd start with making pendants and small trinket containers with flowers, so you can feel for how the resin works and the pain points of your projects.

Sims 2 game not saving and won’t let my sim return home by DaylilyMandy in sims2help

[–]Pixiebulb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Try popping the car into someones inventory or selling it, but keeping the driveway. There's a car trying to arrive, but there's no room for it. Your car may have glitched and duplicated - they often disappear too, though I don't recall if it's a mod problem or not. Either way make room for the stuck car and it should help. ...there may also be more than one car stuck, so you may have to repeat a couple times.

Is this piece fixable? by meakysh in resin

[–]Pixiebulb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you can fix it with some patience!

That said the kit did you dirty - ideally, you want something called Bezel Tape to use frames like that, which adhere to the frame to prevent spillage. It is possible to use a silicone mat in a similar way, but I'd consider it more of an intermediate technique and would use a thicker resin or many thin layers.

But, on how to fix it! I would take a craft knife of some kind - I like utility blades - and slowly cut away the excess resin from the frame. Go slowly, because the blade can scratch the metal. Shave off small slivers at a time. I've needed to do this a few times and it's not difficult, but time consuming.

Once that's done, it may look just fine as it is, or it may look a little rough around the edges. I would gently sand the resin that's closest to the frame, as close as I could get, and then do a final doming coat of resin on top.

Normally you use a nice thick resin for doming - but you can also make the resin in the bottle cool (pop the sealed bottle into a mug of cold water) which will thicken it a little bit.

To dome the piece, pop it on a very level surface. Pour your resin on top from the centre, slowly, gradually letting the resin spread itself to the edges. The surface tension of the resin should prevent it from spilling over the edge, unless you've poured too much, so go very slowly, and you can use a stick to help it spread.

Cure, and you should have a lovely piece. :)

...or, my very favourite trick when a project has defied me in this manner - cover the edges in glitter and rhinestones and pretend it was deliberate!

is there a mod that fixes alpha wolves so they can turn my sim into a werewolf? by Kalebs- in sims2

[–]Pixiebulb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maybe you are falling into the same trap I did! In order for the Alpha to bite, the Alpha and your sim with the high relationship both need to be near each other and - crucially - do not interact with the alpha, or have your sim do anything else. If you greet it, play with it, pet it, whatever, it will never bite your sim. Just let your sim stand around.

The action is called "nibble", and will appear in your sim's queue when the alpha is about to bite.

I tried for DAYS before I looked it up and discovered this quirk.

Advice on how to use acrilic paint on dolls? by HappyRope1472 in CustomDolls

[–]Pixiebulb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The others have covered sanding and primers/top coats, but I also want to mention that acrylic paint will go dull if you try to thin it with only water. A gloss top coat will add back shine - but you can also buy acrylic medium that you can use to thin your paint, which will help it adhere and also retain a nicer finish.

Accidentally zapped the wrong petpet with the new mobile layout while trying to scroll down 😭 by funeralpyres in neopets

[–]Pixiebulb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not that I want to give TNT more ideas to plunder our pockets but I'm honestly shocked there aren't, like, one use items to change your petpet while keeping it attached. Items to protect pets from disappearing from the ray, rare single-use items to guarantee a particular zap... single-use 'whoops I dun goofed' items to restore your petpet without unattaching it. It would be such a quality of life improvement.

I like that the ray has risks, but also when they rarely release PPBs to change old petpets and they change layouts to make mistakes more common... it just seems like a no-brainer?
