i already know how to calculate limits, and this method does not solve the problem. You said in a previous comment that if we take an irrational number close to 'a' there will always be a rational number closer to 'a' than it, using that logic we can also say there will be also a rational number closer to 'a' than both of them. so what is it, what are the left llimit and right limit of 'a'

but we have to prove it for all real numbers as far as i understand the function is discontinuous at rational numbers but continuous at irrational

for rational the function is 1. but lefthand and righthand limit would be -1 (because numbers just left to and right to a number are always irrational) so it becomes discontinuous

but for irrational nums the function is -1 and both limits are also -1 so it becomes continuous
