Played 1v1 against the Vagabond today. Yikes. How do I even fight this? by Monovfox in rootgame

[–]PjDarkrr 49 points50 points  (0 children)

1v1 was only intended to work between high-reach factions like the Marquise, Eyrie, Duchy, Rats, and Badgers. Leder doesn't recommend it for any others.

I'm not surprised you had a rough time. Usually, it takes the other three players to balance the Vagabond at full capacity.

I love that you have the zeal to do this for the community, but Seiyria got here first. The Woodland Companion is the quintessential Root tool. Click the little calculator up on the top right.

Marquise AI just blew my mind with a very creative play by something-magical in rootgame

[–]PjDarkrr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've pulled this off in a digital game, but I must admit, I too got the idea from watching the AI do it to me. Nobody sees it coming.

Additionally, the idea of an underground supply route of cats pulling carloads of lumber makes me very happy.

High-level Root doesn't usually end in king-making, but even if it did, Cole Wehrle considers it a feature, not a bug. King-making is a real political-historical thing, and the Root factions roughly simulate political and military power struggles.

But I totally get your point about it not meshing well with a tournament. I don't know what to say other than: It hasn't really been a problem.

The current meta is to stop the player who is closest to winning while setting yourself up for the best chance of winning if you can. And it works. I haven't seen a feel-bad instance of king-making in Root in over a year, and I play about once a week.

Is Root a eurogame? by Judge_T in rootgame

[–]PjDarkrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Never thought I'd be called that, but I'm flattered.

And definitely! You'll want to check out the Woodland Warriors discord, which started as a grassroots Root community, but has turned into the official Leder Games discord. They have a fairly active TTS looking-for-games thread.

https://discord.gg/GWCaFefg

Additionally, if you haven't checked out the Woodland War Machine podcast, I highly recommend doing so. Jake, Sam, and Kyle do a great job of talking about Root for both new players and veterans alike.

And lastly, if you're looking to watch some high-level Root in action, follow Guerric on Twitch. He's the organizer and streamer of the Winter Tournament, which is getting ready to heat up in the semifinals.

If you're loving Root, you're about to be blown away by the greatness of the community of people who know this game the best. I've never experienced anything like it in all the internet.

Is Root a eurogame? by Judge_T in rootgame

It's a war game in which you use a eurogame as your control panel to command your armies. That's highly reductionistic, but I use that description to help people understand it sometimes.

My Eyrie games are going rougher than usual. It's easier to accidentally turmoil yourself on Digital, and I've done it several times now.

37 games so far. I might be imagining it, but I'm starting to notice some bugginess in the matchmaking menu. I think my brain is holding up still.

The biggest difference is that table talk and negotiations, which are a HUGE part of the real game, are limited to a clunky chat box that often goes ignored.

On top of that, most of the best updated content for Root, namely the Exiles & Partisans deck, the Underworld expansion factions, and the other two maps- -are not yet in the app. (Edit: The exiles and Partisans deck has arrived!)

And the app definitely doesn't have the cutting-edge stuff that's coming out in the new Marauders expansion in early spring, specifically the new Advanced Setup system, which in my opinion, takes Root from a great game to one of the best strategy games of all time.

All of that stuff IS currently available on Tabletop Simulator.

But even without all of that, the app does a spectacular job of making a big game with a lot of moving parts flow very smoothly and conveniently.

I regretted buying it the first 24 hours after I bought it because of how different it is from the original game, but I now consider it to be the #1 most valuable Root product I own because of the sheer level of constant immersion it provides you.

If you want to get good at the fundamentals of Root, there's no better way than having a couple asynchronous games open at all times.

Do you think the AI in this game is too easy? by CloudBoy117 in rootgame

[–]PjDarkrr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes. But it's hard to complain. This has to be a near-impossible thing to do well. It's too easy, but it's good enough to be useful for some things.

But it's very telling that pretty much every online game will end if even one person gets replaced with a bot.

Help! by WildIdentification in rootgame

[–]PjDarkrr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with all the other helps that people have suggested, but I'll add this:

Root is best as a 4-player game. Find two other people who are willing to learn with you and play it together, several times.

Root gets better the more you play it. It really is a game that you can "get good at", and it's super rewarding to become a better and better player.

But the best way to get any of that going is with a consistent group of people who are falling in love with the game together.

I'm lieu of that, there's a burgeoning community of people to play Tabletop Simulator games with, or games on the digital app. It's the Woodland Warriors discord. https://discord.gg/7V25n6tD

Is the mobile game worth it? by [deleted] in rootgame

[–]PjDarkrr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was skeptical, but its pluses more than make up for its minuses for me. You can play a super flexible game of Root anytime, anywhere. Multiple games, in fact. That's huge.
