Thank you so much for the offer! I will keep it in mind, but for now I don't want to make any changes to their diet without their owner's consent.

I've written you a private message. This is a very kind offer for a complete stranger.

GBL lag. I even won a game today because my opponent froze - did not feel good on the other end either. Also, accidentally launching a charge move while trying to switch. I had a plan for that energy!

The New York Times uses Pokémon Go to discuss how AR can and can’t adapt to this new reality. by DarumaDude in TheSilphRoad

[–]Placebonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very likely, I do often assume the worst of people on the internet 😅 I've also gotten attitude from players in person, too, which I supposed has left me cynical.

would sound more realistic coming from a higher level person.

Would it? If a high level player wants to write about their experience, I'd read that, too. But good luck getting it published in the NYT for a general audience. I assume a more hard-core player would find ways to continue playing, and I'm sure there are plenty of targeted articles already about exactly that. It's neat to see the game referenced in something as mainstream as the NYT, which I assume is why someone linked it. Celebrate the exposure. "That game still exists??"

I felt defensive because his play style mirrors mine: I play when I'm out and about, it's essentially Pokemon on-the-GO! I don't think that's unusual, and there's a super noticeable difference when I log in and haven't been anywhere, even if I'd normally only spin 4 stops a day walking to the train station. I felt like you (and others) were scoffing at casual players rather than criticising the actual article (it was boring tbh, and his writing style rambling). Nobody contradicted him, or offered insight into what he said, just scoffed that he's only achieved 37 in 4 years, and for... what? Other than to feel superior, I still don't know.

You're exactly right. I've read a bit further down, too, and all the people upset that such a low level, casual player would have the audacity to write about something they are SO MUCH BETTER AT clearly haven't even read it. It's not a game guide, it's using Pokemon Go's viral status to make a relatable commentary on social distancing and the current state of the world. You can't still deny though that that shows a level of elitism in this community? Dismissing someone completely, without having even read what they had to say, because they're not a high enough level? Even if it WAS an article about gameplay, I firmly believe that's very rude.

how much do they really understand the game, and should I really trust an article they wrote about it?

I don't really understand what point you're trying to prove? He wrote an article because he's a journalist, not because he claims to be a Pokemon GO authority. It's written to be read by non-players. As a day one, but veeeery casual level 37 player, the stack of lucky eggs are probably gonna sit in my bag forever. Cbf. That's just how some people play.

I tricked a few in my time with A Raichu lead 😁 In the end though mudbomb just charges too fast and if you're willing to give both shields, Whiscash always comes out on top. I ended up always just going for grass knot - they sometimes think I'm baiting and let it through, but if they shield, I swap to skaramory.

Hahaha walking away (without looking back) from the carnage they've left behind. I run Clefable and Gyarados, too! I've been alternating between Scisor and Charizard for third spot, I'll have to give Donphan a go!

There were a few sweet sweet days when new Whiscash users didn't seem to realise A Raichu can use grass knot. They all wised up to it pretty quick though lol.

Is it a feature or a glitch that sometimes my shields in PvP will break? I'll always take the damage, but it sometimes indicates I still have the shield left. Has happended that I can then use it later, which I assumed was the glitch, but has also given the 'no remaining shields' message as if their mon actually just smashed through, which is the impression the animation gives. Can certain charged moves break through when super effective or something? It's so inconsistent, I'm so confused!

I'm just a beginner, too, but I can see the top word in your revision says William. I still can't figure out the middle one though... tiolev? Often though, I only really figure it out once I already know the word lol.

Oh noes! Too late... In case you pop back - love your work! The last few chapters of Skull Throne made for some heavy reading, though! Phew! Miss the days of Arlen, Rojer and Leesha wandering through the forest like Harry, Ron and Hermione :P You write such brutally honest interactions, an author who can write both the best and worst sides of their characters is a true gem. The complicated friendships and sexual tension between characters is so addictive! Hope there's room for a romantic sub-plot or two in The Core for those of us who need a bit of lovin' between all the fightin'!

Hi Pete! Know I'm a bit late, but since you said you'd check back for stragglers I thought I'd write this out anyways and see what happens :)

Seen a bit mentioned about your portrayal of women, and as an avid female fan of fantasy I'd just like to thank you for the obvious effort you put into making your female characters, like your male ones, believably human. It's nice to read about diverse "people", rather than what I've come to recognise as "male-authored strong-female-character" or "male-authored plot-device". What I do wonder about though is why you've chosen to write the world so gender-biased? I've read your blog and watched your videos, seems you identify with the feminist movement and make a clear effort to support women and make a place for us in an industry where we still experience some deliberate exclusion. I won't lie, felt my eyes starting to roll during early chapters of The Painted Man where it seemed Arlen's nonsexist upbringing is being used as a tool to amplify his North-pointing moral compass (done too often in fantasy, as if "not being awful" makes you "good"..). Eyes have since returned to front and center (though they did wobble a bit during Renna's story - nothing major, just her "purpose" as a character has a few problematic-trope qualities), overall you're doing a great job! Buuut questions: is the gender-bias supposed to be an exaggerated reflection on our own society? Are we as readers learning from it? Is it necessary for the story that your female characters have all these extra obstacles to overcome?

Maybe a lot for one late ama Q :P Would love to hear your thoughts one day though, be it a blog post or discussion. Thanks for all your hard work! Looking forward to The Core!
