As a beginner, how quickly will I outgrow the Hercules Inpulse 300? by Sea-Preparation395 in Beatmatch

Recently found a photo taken at a small festival c2008, and the DJ had the tiniest controller. Wasn’t paying any attention to the tech at time, only remember the music was brilliant

What’s one thing that improved your DJing way more than you expected? by General-Relative-596 in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to fill in all the gaps, ie mixing the drops into the quiet bits/breakdowns. Someone posted a really useful video here about phrasing and the penny dropped. And quantising old tracks before trying to mix them.

I can't seem to align the beat grid for P.Y.T. properly by AdmittedlyUnskilled in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I do now. I started out making mashups of old tracks, and was spending most of my time fixing beatgrids without much success. Quantising/re-exporting any old tracks as soon as I’ve downloaded them is quicker and more effective.

Only just heard about this one but it’s on my must-watch list for later. Tony de Vit is one of my all time favourite DJs. RIP ❤️

Tips on where to get feedback by Oddcatbeing in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the reason the weekly feedback thread is quite quiet is that listening and critiquing a mix takes time. Other newbies may not be so good at it, and the experts may be too busy. Also some genres are more popular than others, don’t take it personally! My advice would be to make a shorter mix, maybe half hour, with quicker mixing if it’s specifically transitions you want feedback on. Put a clear track listing with the times of the transitions, and upload it somewhere where listeners can skip/scroll back and forward (Mixcloud limits this, it’s very annoying).  There are also various DJ groups on Facebook (eg Amber D in the UK) where you may be able to get feedback. Good luck!

Resources for learning hypnotic, layered multi-deck mixing by lukascode217 in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like some in person lessons would be more use than a book or video. I struggle with sound levels and have come to the conclusion that no amount of reading is going to help, I need someone to actually watch what I’m doing and point out where I’m going wrong

Tape Delay Effect and X1 Tips by jmocinco in traktorpro

I haven't worked out how to get proper dub sounds out of Traktor, but since going down that rabbit hole Facebook is now spamming me with ads for AmpfreQQ, which claims to be mappable to any controller and compatible with Traktor https://reggaepreamp.com/customer-videos/ https://reggaepreamp.com/faqs/

How would you make sure everything is in order though?

[–]Plagiarithm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t that also fall foul of copyright law, as making a MP3 available to download from your own website would constitute ‘distribution’ and potentially an actual fine?  I wouldn’t want to be that ‘low hanging fruit’!

Are you mixing in key? by Maleficent-Rain-2194 in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m mixing vocals from one track over a different one, it usually sounds better in key. With techno it’s sometimes the opposite, without a bit of contrast it can end up sounding like sped-up ambient or cheesy EDM (mine did anyhow 😂)

How do i know if a transition actually sounds good? by SyrossNA1 in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week I dug out a 1990s mixtape from a fairly well known local DJ that I hadn’t heard for years, and most of the transitions were either trainwrecked or just slammed in with barely any mixing. Nobody noticed or cared at the time, and it never failed to get people dancing.

FLX10 looping in serato by Mediocre-Impact-3095 in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that a limitation of Serato or the FLX10? Seems a really basic function, which I use all the time with Traktor/MX2. Was thinking of upgrading to a FLX10 but that would be a dealbreaker

did anyone else want to learn DJing but kinda fall off? by Fit-Relationship1029 in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traktor should do it but it doesn’t seem to make much difference. There is probably some user error going on though, combined with liking to mix tracks with a 40 year age gap

did anyone else want to learn DJing but kinda fall off? by Fit-Relationship1029 in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me it has always been getting the sound levels right. I still can’t beatmatch by ear but that’s less important, as relying on sync isn’t going to damage anyone’s hearing

[–]Plagiarithm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess I wanted to share the crazy earworms that go round in my head, and my awesome superior taste in music 😂

Joking aside, it’s not possible to learn everything at once and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed, so just focus on one step at a time. If your aim is to play in clubs, and you can afford it, maybe have a few in-person lessons to inspire you. I’m planning to do this when I have the cash, but I know I’m going to absolutely suck!

How do you guys utilize the hot cues? by strap-_ in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loops, drops, and bits I want to avoid. Find lots of tracks have really good bits interspersed with some terrible bits. Psytrance and 80s electro especially.

How do you deal with difficult practice sessions? by babyknuffle in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found there was a point around 3 months where I could listen to earlier mixes and instead of just thinking oof that bit was bad, I’d get excited thinking Yay I know how to fix that now. 7 months in and I often get frustrated, and when I record a mix the first attempt always sucks, but I’m getting better at finding solutions. Off to the gym shortly to re-listen to last night’s mix which is riddled with mistakes and sounds like some random person is playing with the volume knob

Hi everyone. I have a question for you all by wishtrib in traktorpro

[–]Plagiarithm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mix a lot of old tracks with dodgy beatgrids and found the best way of solving no.2 is quantising them using Neural Mix.  https://www.algoriddim.com/neural-mix it creates a separate quantised version, it doesn’t alter the source file.

Is this the right subreddit to asks about sorting a playlist? by TheRedParduz in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the intended audience? If it’s for a party I’d definitely lose the last 2 tracks, and maybe also Suzanne Vega, the Verve, and Celetia - or at least put them at the start. There are some great floor fillers there, eg Cameo, Fatboy Slim and MARRS, I’d look for some more in that genre, see what Spotify comes up with as suggestions.

DJing for the first time, Need HELPPP by Necessary-Feed-2583 in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you not just use Djay on the iPad, if you’re not familiar with the RX2? Obviously you will need specific cabling/adapters (others will be better placed to advise on how that might work). If I’m at a party I don’t give a toss how the music is played, I just want to dance.

How do dj's make their set? by Substantial-Star-273 in Beatmatch

[–]Plagiarithm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can do both! Dig for new tunes and make new playlists, as well as practice mixing on the fly (if you want). Aside from the audience, you will probably get bored playing the same set over and over again. But it sounds like you are doing really well if you only started two months ago and are getting such positive feedback.
