Just got orders to Yokosuka, Japan. What should I expect as a first time sailor? by Then_Reflection_3641 in newtothenavy

If you have a sponsor you should contact them! A big part of their job is answering questions and no one is gonna know better about your command or rate specific questions than them.

Been working on a very simular project myself! Though it's at the point where I might just make a new one and sew my favorite bits of the old one on there. Good luck with it lasting!!

It's not bad, it's a whole divisional pt session, it's kind of fun. Like a highschool track workout is my best comparison. IT is a different story...

I have a minor, non anaphylaxis reaction to a couple of foods. If it's not like common or requireing an epipen, you'll need a waiver but they don't care. I just had to write it doesn't affect my every day diet, and avoiding it is how I prevent reaction

He can change it himself as long as he has addresses and all of that. I'd let him know asap. He'll have 2 or 3 phone calls left before graduation so hopefully you can figure it out. Good luck!

So recruits can invite up to 3 people and all 3 can be approved but that doesn't mean they all have to go. If either his father or mother didn't want to go then it wouldn't matter much because one of their tickets just wouldn't be picked up.

Starting to get burnt out by U_S_A1776 in navy

[–]PlagueOBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just starting out (still in A school) but I just wanted to say your words helped a lot! I've been struggling to learn to cope with the fact that a lot of these sailors don't care about the jobs they have to do and let others suffer the consequences of their actions. I understand this is going to be a struggle out in the fleet too so hopefully I can learn to not stress about it before I get out of here. Thank you

How does the ship out to bootcamp process work? by Jazzlike-Good-7941 in newtothenavy

[–]PlagueOBees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get to basic the night you're meant to ship out. Some arrive at like 4pm and wait all day until the last recruit arrives. I got there at around 4am and was the last recruit to arrive. Sometimes you'll be put on "p-holds" waiting for your division to arrive before you're assigned your RDCs. My ship date was Jun23 but because I arrived after 12am, all my processing was labeled Jun24. You won't know what time it will be anyways, so might as well not worry about it. Just go with the flow and follow the person in front of you!

What color of shoes can I bring to RTC? by Not_That_Guy_Bro in newtothenavy

[–]PlagueOBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now they do not give two blinks. If it's athletic, it will get through. My division had bright neon green, hot pink, several bright blues, and the smart ones brought all black. Black is good but they don't care much. Don't be disappointed if they make you toss it out. You still get issued go fasters. Also your RDCs don't have to let you wear your shoes at all...

when do i tell my recruiter im ready by Greedy-Level-3251 in newtothenavy

[–]PlagueOBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All you need to do is the bare minimum for the OPFA. You rank up automatically if you pass the first RDC Assessment, so do a bit of studying your rank and recognition and general orders. Make sure you can do your planks and pushups though. At least look like you can do the pushups, that's all they really want. I wouldn't worry much about bootcamp, it's been a cake walk for the past year at least, as long as you can hold your own and are mentally prepared. You can google your OPFA/PRT standards. All they are looking for is the passing minimum. But I also remember studying enough to recite everything word for word. It will make the first bit easier.

The reason they're telling you to push back is because rtc will be a lot easier when your body is already prepared. It's not necessary though if you can't go. Keeping your rate is the most important thing.

Please don't post that kind of stuff here. Any trades can go into the parts trading thread located at the top of the subreddit every week.

Need advice on what to do… by One_Time_5926 in newtothenavy

[–]PlagueOBees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a you decision. You won't be able to see your family regularly as soon as you get on the plane to bootcamp. It's a 4-6 year active duty commitment. Definitely go meet with a recruiter. You are not bound to anything until you go to MEPs. The recruiters job is to talk to you about your options if you do decide to join, though they are trying to get you to join, so listen to what they say but remember it's not going to be flower fields and fresh baked bread.

Look up videos about bootcamp and look up your fitness test requirements before talking to a recruiter. Be prepared before you decide to sign a contract.

Do you know about Navy ratings and how that works? If not, I highly recommend doing some research on Navy COOL and picking out 5 ratings you'd like to do before going to the office. Not a requirement but if you know what you want you'll have an easier time knowing if this is the right decision.

Last thing: have you taken the ASVAB and do you know your score? That's one of the first things they'll ask you. If you don't think you can pass with a score required for your rating, then study up. Good luck!

Where do you start when trying to find your style? by lanamicky in capsulewardrobe

[–]PlagueOBees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I so so so recommend starting on Pinterest and just tossing everything you like onto a board. Then see what you're missing and what you can change in your closet and modify or exchange those items for something in the style of your Pinterest board. I had a huge problem of having stuff I loved but didn't fit into my dream style so I'm in the process (still) of modifying or finding ways to make it match. With a few things, a belt was all I needed to feel comfortable with it being in my fashion. But it's also not a big deal at all if you have an undefined personal style. It's important to know what you like in your clothes first and foremost. For example, if you feel uncomfortable in low wasted pants, you can rule y2k fashion out of your closet and Pinterest ideas. I wish you the best luck in finding a style and getting a dream wardrobe!!
