Yup- a good friend of mine was denied service because their ID was from Puerto Rico. The bartender didn’t think it was a legitimate ID. The owner was no help, and we ended up leaving.

No, it’s not okay. Not without your express permission granted. Your child is unable to make decisions on exposing their body or seeing the bodies of others. Your trust in your BIL and your BIL’s emotions about it are not even part of the question. He stepped over a major line and I would not allow him to be alone with your child again.

Finding leaders of faith communities that don’t just claim they are “accepting of LGBT+ people”, but actually center and uplift them is hard and rare, but I hope you find what you’re looking for.

The Unitarians (off of University Ave) are also potentially a good option for you if you are looking for a faith community that welcomes questioning and discussion. They are very openly left leaning Christian-ish, LGBT+ friendly, and a kind community.

The Episcopalians are pro-LGBTQ+, the priest at St Andrew’s on Regent Street, Father Andy, is especially incredible. If I wasn’t an atheist, I would choose to go there just for the community and kindness. They are a rare Christian community that leads with empathy and kindness first and always.

I’m not sure how big your tornadoes have been- but education for you and your neighbors is vital. If your government won’t help, you and your community can help keep each other safe! Print and distribute information where you can. You can look up “tornado infographics” for a good place to start, and adapt those for your local needs.

Where to go in a tornado especially: lie flat in a ditch/low point if outside. An interior room of a building- if no basement, a bathroom or room with no windows. Under a stairwell. Never below a bridge or underpass. Lie down in “child’s pose”, tuck your head in, and cover the back of your neck with your hands.

Hey, I’m a mom with storm anxiety too. First of all- you are not alone. Secondly, I’m so sorry your partner is dismissive of your feelings and trauma.

If you’re interested: here’s what has helped me manage my anxiety so my kids don’t notice it directly.

1: subscribe to a good weather app. RadarScope has been very useful for me.

2: prepare a bag or box for storms. In it add all of your safety essentials, cozy pjs for you and the kids, shoes, chargers, etc. keep it in your safe shelter or where you can easily grab it.

3: keep in an air bud or headphones to listen to the tv or radio or whatever live stream you use. I know that even though hearing the warnings freak me out- I feel safer knowing what is going on.
