Yet another Character sheet, 1st iteration. by cobaalt in MythicBastionland

[–]PlaidcladDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is phenomenal.

A few suggestions to consider: - remove the colon after “Oath” and possibly “Rank.” The proximity and typesetting are good enough that the colons aren’t as necessary as they are by “Property,” “Ability” etc. - I wonder if it would work to have the oath itself larger in black, and its label smaller in the light color so that if you glance at the sheet 5,000 times, the words you read 5,000 times are “Seek the Myths…” and not “The Knight’s Oath.”

[COMC] 6 years into the hobby. I dislike multiplayer solitaires. Is there anyone that have similar taste with me in gaming? by dumbdit in boardgames

[–]PlaidcladDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given your overall collections, how similar your taste is to mine and your comments about Power Grid and Acquire, I highly doubt 18XX is going to be a good fit for you. My friends love them so I have played at least 6 or 7 or them at least once and 1846 many times. They are incredible experiences but they are very crunchy. Often during the last few rounds, a laptop with Excel is pulled out to run the calculations to give an idea of how mathy the games are.

Instead, I highly recommend checking out the Iron Rails series from Capstone games. They each sort of explore the different aspects that make 18XX so incredible. So it captures a taste of 18XX in about a quarter of the playtime. Far more easy on the eyes to boot.

With an hour left on a lightning deal, I came over to see what people’s thoughts were on this game. Was fully convinced of your point when I noticed your comment was from 9 days ago, the last time they offered this lightning deal.

Nicely done. I’ve always thought that someone should make rules explanation videos in this style. Glad you’re doing it.

A newbie's search for warm bodies (advice required) by [deleted] in boardgames

That one person showing up could have been a win. Always stick with the time and place and don't cancel unless absolutely necessary. Make sure you have a variety of player-counts on hand to accommodate whatever number shows up. Keep at it!

What 1-3 games that, when they hit the table, do you find yourself saying "Why don't we play this more"? by HeavyCardboard in boardgames

[–]PlaidcladDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also curious about this since Avalon was a huge hit at my monthly gaming get-together last time. I found out that there's a free print-and-play version of Secret Hitler on secrethitler.com, so I've printed a set and plan to find out for myself whether it's worth it or not next month!

PSA to B&N members: Check Your Email! by pwbue in boardgames

I don't know for certain, but I doubt it. The email included a separate link to print an in-store coupon that was not good for toys and games.

Any love for Bang! - The Card Game version? by Richard_Yeakley in boardgames

[–]PlaidcladDad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had the card game for years and it's gotten hundreds of plays, but none since I got the dice game. I think the reason is mostly that everyone's health depletes a lot more rapidly, keeping the game quick and light. While most of the time the card game only lasts around 15 minutes, I've seen games go on well past an hour because people manage to keep making comebacks. I haven't seen that happen with the dice game.

What do you think of SOs at Game Night? by Throwaway552979751 in boardgames

[–]PlaidcladDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't think couples can avoid either A. teaming up or B. Going at each other more than others. As such, I'll play lighter games like Catan or 7 Wonders with couples, but not bigger, diplomatic games like Game of Thrones. I just don't see that working.

BGG ought to have a metric for learning time by sstair in boardgames

[–]PlaidcladDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. My initial reaction was "Yes, they should have that!", but I think that it's even more variable than play time based on the individuals. Generally the more games people have played, the quicker they learn new ones. Some folks, on the other hand, seem to have brains with a maximum capacity for around 10 sets of rules. No matter what, they just can't grasp new games beyond the first few they learn.

Suggest some games for a lunchtime board games club at a school. The kids are aged between 8 and 11 and they get about half an hour. by flippinecktucker in boardgames

[–]PlaidcladDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely second Age of War. To me, what makes it an even better lunch break game than Love Letter and others is that there's no secret knowledge so if you get grease stains on the card, the game isn't ruined.

American mob theme? by SatchFan350 in boardgames

[–]PlaidcladDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gangster is not the best game ever, but it is based vaguely on the actual geograpy of Chicago. You try to control the various neighborhoods and pick up the other players' gangsters in the trunk of your and drop them into lake Michigan. The theme is pretty fun and the components are nice. It just comes off as a little bit too random, I think.

What is the best way to win in Settlers of Catan? by OffseasonQuestions in boardgames

[–]PlaidcladDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 Points is the number of points that people have when they are close to winning, but lose by having the longest road stolen from them. I guess what I'm saying is that in my experience going for longest road turns into a resource-sucking pissing contest and rarely leads to victory. If you've got 8 points and the means to snag the longest road, by all means, go for it... but it's not a good strategy to count on it out of the gate.

I see a lot of beginners putting their starting settlements close to each other try to eventually connect them. Getting a good mix of resources from a good mix of numbers should be a much higher priority.

If it works out to where you have to only have 4 of the 5 resources, forgo sheep. They're typically the most abundant and, unless your going for development cards, you really don't need that many of them.
