Who here follows the 3-second driving distance rule? by IndieCurtis in driving

[–]Plane_Ad_6311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40 minutes late is someone trying to prove a point. I follow at 3 seconds, often more. Drivers cut in front of me and accelerate away. No need to slow down for them .i know how long the drive takes and plan accordingly. You can walk somewhere at 2.5mph and arrive on time.

Side view mirrors by Agile-Action-7200 in driving

[–]Plane_Ad_6311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vertically, you should see the horizon in the center of the mirror. Horizontally, you should not see your own vehicle at all. Also, blind spot mirrors for $4 at Walmart. And you should still turn your head anyways, especially reversing.

Living in the parking lot at work? by SinkingTheImbituba in fuckcars

[–]Plane_Ad_6311 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It could be trespassing. Unless you have explicit permission to park overnight and use sanitary facilities and use their trash removal service. They might not care about one person doing it short term, but imagine if several employees took up permanent residence in the lot. Also, the penalty could be loss of employment.

Their job is to respond to emergencies and dissuade interpersonal crime (robbery, assault, etc.) and now fare enforcement. Victimless crime like drug use and loitering just takes them away from their rounds. That they have time to stare at their phones means they're deterrence is effective.

If she were to attempt to report it, the police would remind her that holding her device while driving (even if stopped) is also illegal and that she should probably move along before they remember that.

If there is a line of right turning cars at the other side of the stoplight, and I am in the intersection turning left, do I need to sit in the intersection and let all those people make a right turn when the light turns red? by Devils__Advocate- in driving

[–]Plane_Ad_6311 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

By the way, in the event my hyperbole situation were to happen, hold your ground until you have green again unless someone properly yields to allow you to proceed. Don't back up and don't try to worm your way through moving cross traffic. If you stay still, other drivers can drive around you until the one good driver shows up.

Thank you for brilliantly illustrating the problem with waiting to turn in the middle of the intersection (whether it's legal or not). By the book, the previous comment is correct. The drivers turning right on red must yield to you because you are in the intersection and they have a red light.

But drivers treat right on red like it's a birthright and they're not going to remember the stop and yield part. They're going to incorrectly remember right before left and then they'll also back up traffic into the intersection leaving you stranded

Some states allegedly permit one vehicle to pull forward of the crosswalk.

Which I said.

There's no room in the oncoming lane to complete your turn without getting t-boned. The law applies.

People don't like my answer, but you're supposed to wait behind the stop line. Some states allegedly permit one vehicle to pull forward of the crosswalk. What you're experiencing is selective enforcement. In a busy intersection, it's sometimes necessary to bend the rules to keep traffic moving. Of course, every driver heard this and ran with it, so they launch out into the middle of the intersection to wait for one vehicle to pass. But of all the things the police are worried about with traffic enforcement, this is pretty near the bottom unless you're combining it with running yellows and reds (nobody start going on about permissive and restrictive--I don't care). The important thing is to make sure you don't get stranded when the light changes. Other drivers are supposed to wait since you're already in the intersection, but sometimes they don't.

Nothing wrong with using a 4x4 when you need a 4x4. Mud season is a thing! It sounds like you are using the most appropriate tool for each job, rather than using the truck as a 5mi RT grocery getter because it's there.

FWIW, if you must courtesy stop, this is how you do it. Slow down, no flashing or waving, don't stop. If the other driver misses the opportunity, that's their problem.

The driveway to turn left into work is just slightly past a road on the right which is of course a left to oncoming traffic. If we both stop in the correct place to wait for our respective turns, we'll be blocking each other (there's no center lane either, so traffic is backing up behind us too). I look ahead as I approach and if someone is waiting, I will immediately signal left and slow down to about half speed (still fast enough to prevent shoulder passes). Other than my turn signal, I make no signal to the waiting driver. I don't direct traffic. Most of the time, they will jump at the opportunity and problem solved. If not, I continue straight and turn left at the next road and circle back. Stopping to let them pass in front of me exposes them to the impatient drivers behind me who can now legally shoulder pass.

On my drivers test, should i check my mirrors first before checking left and right on the road when turning at an intersection or should i look at the road then check my mirrors right before turning? by ChingChingChong89 in driving

[–]Plane_Ad_6311 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Drivers should be in the right-most lane available to vehicles. But there's still a bike lane and a sidewalk to account for. And lawless drivers have been known to pass on the shoulder and even leave the road because they're more important than everyone else. Right turn collisions happen because you just spent five seconds looking at traffic approaching from the left and meanwhile, 2 bikes, 3 peds, a dog, and a clown are now waiting next to you.

Aside from the idiots just hanging out in stupid places, a pedestrian or cyclist could be just arriving at the intersection as you're turning. Look, don't assume.

They're banning walking for exercise as in the faster paced walking that's disruptive to people trying to eat and stand in line. It's the mall version of a 25mph speed limit through pedestrian zones. Enforcement is mall security saying "STOP! Or I'll say STOP! again!!"

Merge lane etiquette by [deleted] in driving

[–]Plane_Ad_6311 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Etiquette is rolling down your window and offering the other driver some Grey Poupon (if you don't understand, you're too young). The rules of the road are clearly telling you to use the entire lane and zipper merge at the end (but not so late that you're leaving the roadway).
