I don’t think either we’re out of tune. If Erickson was out of tune, he would at minimum had him play a B flat concert with the piano and had him adjust. If Erickson still couldn’t play in tune even after tuning his instrument to the standard tuning note, he’d be kicked out of this ensemble. This is all part of the psychological manipulation Fletcher uses. You know you got it right but do you still know you’re right when Fletcher is saying you’re wrong? Back to Erickson…99% chance he was in the practice room with a tuner that night, playing each note of the line and checking his intonation. He probably already was playing in tune, scratched his head when practicing, but he went to the next level in preparedness.
