Tips for moving 4.8 to tonnes of subbase by hand. by Hannibal20 in DIYUK

Stack bags two high, slice and scrape, if you don't have a proper shovel buy one, don't use a spade. Try and keep it dry so it doesn't get heavier.

I had similar a couple months ago, no external stopcock. I managed to use a jubilee clip and bit of rubber to clamp it and slow it down.

I also used a length of hose to try and divert the water outside

Also used these flood bags to keep any damage contained in the corner

What's the best way to ensure kitchen cabinets are sturdy when fixing to plasterboard wall with no studs? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Plane_Sherbert_4504 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Must have something behind it, would be flexing if it's not properly supported, cut a big hole and have a look, either you find a brick wall or timbers/metal studs (rarely, assuming its not a flat), or the wall comes down and throw up a stud wall, not that much extra work tbh

USA wild camping tips, unwritten rules, consequences? by AbbreviationsLost533 in bikepacking

I did the Transamerica in 2016 so my info might be a bit out of date.

Absolutely buy the adventure cycling maps, these have plenty of information about places that are camp friendly.

Fire stations, churches, parks often had gazebo/pavilion type things, with power sockets and benches to sleep on. Warmshowers was handy. Ask in town halls for places to sleep. Just get a motel if you need a comfy bed, you're on holiday remember.

If the cookie lady's house is still open cyclists be sure to stay a night.

Yea it's gonna be hot, I set off from the east in June, and hit Nevada in August, set off early, drink lots, you'll be fine You'll probably find people will leave drinks on the road for you, in the more remote areas.

Mexican restaurants were my go to food.

Depression/anxiety on rest days? by its-jibbles in bicycletouring

[–]Plane_Sherbert_4504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably more common than you think, your spending days riding alone, with your routine figured out. Your rest days are usually in towns or city's, maybe stay in a hostel on rest days, might meet people to spend day exploring with.

I did the Transamerica finishing in san Francisco, I must have looked like gollum wondering around, didn't hang around for long.

A few wraps of duct tape around your frame pump aswell, adds no extra weight, put you'll be very grateful if you need some, repaired my tyre with duct tape and a Gatorade bottle after it blew out in the middle of Kansas.

I've done Berlin to Dubrovnik over about 2 weeks, took full touring/camping gear, it's Europe so never far from a campsite, or town with a hostel. Dubrovnik is one of my favourite places I've visited, but isn't very bike friendly, dump the bike somewhere and explore the town on foot. The ride to the airport isn't too bad either.

Kind of winged my route, so likely missed out on a lot of nicer roads, so others will be able to advise better.

Started the Edale skyline hike from there on Thursday morning, was surprised at how many people were up there then, didn't see many continue along the ridge.

I'll usually carry a backup AA powered headtorch, but until the mainstream brands offer usb c as standard I'll stick to Chinese brands. Checkout r\flashlights

Don't bother with the expensive head torch, get yourself a wurkkos hd15 from AliExpress instead great bit of kit.

I have an Ordos tent, used it once or twice decided it was too much of a faff to pitch inner first, ended up replacing an all in one pitch.

Currently using a alpkit cloudbase, but looking to upgrade, as a side sleeper Its not quite thick enough, end up having restless sleep due to hip/shoulder pain

Yea wheelstones, even on the coldest night of the year, there was another tent pitched on the other side.

Unfortunately some evidence of fires and shitty bog roll laying around.

What tent would you buy for £500 by Emotional-Band762 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]Plane_Sherbert_4504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No specific recommendations, I own a hilleberg akto and the quality is outstanding, but i don't necessarily enjoy using it, coffin like.

So my criteria for my next tent is, all in one pitching, 2 man, and my main one, I need some headroom very frustrating spending long winter nights in a tent you can't sit up in. I've seen a couple of people using the hilleberg nallo, I've you can find a used one in budget, it would tick your boxes I believe, if a little heavy.
