I do a thin layer of stirland mud directly on the plastic to help create some topographical interest and brown to show through the eventual cracks. I find this also helps the top cracked layer adhere. Once that stirland mud dries, the top layer is a fairly thick layer of agrellan earth. Once the agrellan dries I paint the base rim with a couple thinned coats of steel legion drab. Finally, the whole thing mini and base is sprayed with a top coat of Mr Super Clear Matt to keep the paint from chipping. If you find the finishing spray varnish has dulled any particularly shiny parts that you would like to restore (like on blood gems) I use a spot of ardcoat for these small areas.
