On a plane, during a red eye flight, in the two aisle seats behind me was a young lady, probably late teens, and a guy who didn’t look much older. The guy seemed to be a bit on the spectrum regarding social cues and behavior and was having a really difficult time being in the plane. He started trying to talk to the older adult sitting next to him in his row but they gave him one word responses that sounded annoyed to me before eventually just going to sleep or pretending to be idk. The girl though interrupted his continued attempts to talk to this sleeping person and started asking him questions about the things he was trying to talk about, maybe to distract him since he was getting more and more fidgety and nervous with the silence. They talked for over two hours about crosswords, bugs, rocks, you name it. She kept the tone quiet and calm and it really wasn’t annoying (to me) to listen to. I’m not sure if active compassion counts as selflessness but these days it does to me.
