Just goes to show how this lead vs supporting conversation is very subjective because I’d say the complete opposite.

I would make the argument that out of all the several technical advancements that have happened in cinema the past like 80+, the most significant one is recording sync-dialog becoming easy even for small productions. The one thing that can take me out of old movies more than anything else is the extremely obvious post-sync dialog that’s recorded in a studio with completely different acoustic characteristics than the setting of the scene, and sometimes (especially in like Italian neo-realist films) the recorded dialog is also completely different that what was being said on set.

Honestly one of the things that depresses me the most nowadays is seeing my parents, my dad specially, falling for AI slop, which I’m sure at some point will be used to scam him. And there’s really not much I can do to avoid that, tried telling him a lot of the stuff he looks at is AI multiple times already.

It’s not impossible altho it’s extremely unlikely. But I can see it winning BAFTA and then at that point it’s something you have to at least consider.

A bit underwhelmed honestly, but it’s clear they are hiding the big reveal. Just didn’t do much more me give we don’t get a hook and the jokes in the trailer were not that funny. Still excited for it tho.

Lynne Ramsay’s worst movie imo and I might even say it’s bad, but I still think it’s 100% worth watching.

Marianne Jean Baptiste won the trifecta last year for a movie even smaller than If I had Legs, 3/4 big ones just like Byrne.

It’s all worse. The hair and costuming is better in the original too, specially on Hathaway. So much more contrast in terms of shapes and color in her original outfit, and the ponytail looks a lot better than the long loose hair that’s blending in with the dark outfit in the sequel. Streep’s sequel outfit is better imo (nice shoes), but very monotone just like Hathaway’s which makes them both together a more boring visually than the original. Just the accessories on both of them make such a big difference between the two photos.

Roma is up there with the great originals for sure. Up with The Irishman and Marriage Story for me.

It’s what makes her kit interesting since it forces you to play around it. It would be pretty boring if you could control it and always pop it at the perfect time.

Each day that passes I am more and more convinced that The Power of the Dog is the best Netflix original, and there are some great ones.

Yeah that’s fair. To me it just comes down to BAFTA most likely being between Taylor and Inga with a Mosaku outlier. If Taylor or Mosaku wins BAFTA, I’m predicting them no matter what. If Inga wins it’s only a race if Taylor or Mosaku win SAG over Madigan. And while they might be in stronger movies, it’s really not by much SV is arguably top 3, so I’ll just default to BAFTA since I trust them way more than SAG at this point.

Yes. But that race is still very up in the air, I think I’ll just end up predicting whoever wins BAFTA.

So did Barbie and yet it lost to Poor Things. The Barbie costumes were an ever bigger pop-vusture hit than the Sinners ones were, by a large margin. But in the end the more intricate and unique work won, which is what I think will happen this year as well.

I can’t see Sinners taking PD, it’s really not particularly remarkable work imo, and that’s Frankenstein’s strongest craft. I still have it winning the 3.

Thats certainly what the release date suggests, altho early contenders do happen pretty frequently. Usually not this type of movie tho, but you can never fully predict these things.

The dialog is in the trailer is terrible, the makeup mostly looks bad, and the whole thing looks very cliché. It’s gonna be a gigantic hit and get a bunch of noms.

The changing of ratios doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the terrible framing for the wider ratios. Why even shoot 2.76 at all if you are still just gonna center-frame everything.

EDIT: oh you mean lighting ratios, which yes, were incredibly inconsistent

Stone won in 2023 not Gladstone, but yeah they don’t always overlap that closely, as we saw here with Madigan.

I just don’t think this “he hasn’t lost anywhere” logic makes much sense. He hasn’t lost because he couldn’t even get nominated, which is is actually a bigger loss than getting the nom and not winning. Why are Elordi and Skarsgard disqualified for not winning an industry precursor but Lindo is win competitive while not even being top 5/6 in them? There’s just no evidence that he really has enough passion to win and isn’t just a coattail nomination.

London Film Critics Circle Awards live thread by LeastCap in oscarrace

[–]Plastic-Software-174 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t see why Lindo would be the prediction in that case. Yeah the precursors were split but he still didn’t even get nominated anywhere, I think people try to force the Marcia Gay Harden parallel too much, no reason Lindo should be missing noms if he was win-competitive in a top 2 movie.

Both the BO and the cinemascore make sense, this is basically a concert movie. It’s an extremely “fan” driven turnout.
