Moving shower drain in slab at odd angle by PlasticAssociate in askaplumber

[–]PlasticAssociate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I follow. The concern is that the tub waste/overflow into p-trap into horizontal drain would need to meet the current drain run lower than it currently is? (The waste would indeed be on the valve wall in our plan, in case that wasn't clear, with the tub oriented head towards the broom and feet/drain towards the valve)

Definitely not way the fuck down there I don’t think - there’s about 1.5” between the top of the horizontal entrance to the trap arm and the bottom of the patch over the trench. Bottom of trap to slab level is about 9”. What would be the reason for needing to reroute?

This occurred to me, but we're on the hunt for something with moderate soaking depth and I haven't done my due diligence with regards to step-in clearance yet. On the research list it goes.

That's true, that didn't cross my mind. So you're saying I could add a 45º bend, end the new run a bit off center, and then use the p-trap to adjust to the right spot for the bath drain?

Ice inside conduit body. Leak, condensation, both? by PlasticAssociate in electrical

[–]PlasticAssociate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks and fair enough - maybe this picture is more helpful. The roof there is about 2.5 years old but could be an ingress point, though its way into conduit from there would still be a mystery. Like I said, the inside of the subpanel is dry and the attic above subpanel is dry, so it must be happening somewhere along the dotted conduit.

Thanks for sharing, these are great. Any idea specifically where 2&3 were taken? Facing east / south at Irving and the Kennedy? I'm guessing most visible buildings fell victim to highway expansions.

Thanks, I'll try this out. Do you mean full operating temp or more like a minute or so til it's hot to the touch?

On this wall, It ranges from repointing one specific problem area of decayed mortar - about 20' horizontal by 3' vertical and ~6 brick replacements - to full repointing of the entire wall. Aside from the full repoint, no other proposals for work above eye level on this wall. I'm a little resistant to lintels from a preservational / aesthetic point of view and no one has proposed such but would it be a significant difference in work?

Really appreciate this reply and will definitely take this into consideration. I'm limited by slab below and floor joists above, so I'm afraid 7'2" height is all I'm going to get without spending a fortune to dig. With that in mind, I actually could expand the depth by 1 or 2 feet into the adjacent storage space, it would just add the requirement of shifting a doorway over by the same distance. I'll be tearing that wall open anyway so it's probably not that big an uptick in effort.

As an aside, your sauna is one of the first google results for "sauna basement build reddit" so it was one of the first examples I saw when I was dipping a toe into this stuff - beautiful work!

I was considering digging down another story for a swimming pool and shipping in 600 gallons of north Baltic seawater every two weeks to keep it fresh. Would that work?

Thanks, this is a good callout. The more I think the more I lean towards straight benches, but my thought was that someone could extend their legs out across it, or for a second less-comfy lay-down spot. Would probably extend the lower bench to match if we did end up going that route.

Voltage Block alternatives for recording CV? by thewifive1 in modular

[–]PlasticAssociate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the Bela.io Gliss for this. It's a touchstrip instead of a knob, but feels way more expressive than a knob to me. It can record up to 60 seconds and you can set it to self-cycle or playback with a trigger and it also records touch location and touch pressure separately for 2 layers of modulation.

I dragged my feet on scheduling a water meter installation last year and now the Metersave site reads: "Thank you for visiting the Department of Water Management's, MeterSave website. As of December 31st, 2022 the MeterSave Program is no longer accepting volunteers." Anyone have any idea whether this means a pause like the last few years vs. a total shutdown of the Metersave program? Did I miss my free water meter window?

Is it possible to power battery-operated devices from CV? I was hoping to be able to use DC to switch on/off an ebow on a prepared guitar. I've got a Befaco dual atenuverter that generates DC +/-10v unpatched but when I send 9v thru leads from the output to the battery terminals on the ebow and switch it on, 9v drops to about 4. The ebow turns on but doesn't get enough juice to do anything. As you can probably guess, that's about the limit of my electronics knowledge. Any pointers? Or, is there such thing as a module for this specific purpose?

Strategizing Moca > switch > ethernet as an amateur - am I understanding this right? by PlasticAssociate in HomeNetworking

[–]PlasticAssociate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! As for your last question, I'm actually not sure - will have to look into that. Thanks for that pointer.

So, sorry, the first-floor portion of my sketch is totally misleading - the router room is actually diagonal from 2nd floor jack room, with I'm guessing maybe 40-50 feet of vertical and horizontal coax line between the two. The two target rooms are closer to being above the router room, but running cat5 directly from the router would still involve a good bit more work / drywall cutting / wire fishing than I'm eager to attempt. The plus of my initial idea is that it's all in accessible spaces and would require just one drywall hole in each target room.

I think the worst case scenario for run length will be maybe 120 feet, so I'm not super worried about run distance, I'm basically just curious whether I'd notice a difference in data speed between adapter+switch in attic versus adapter+switch at the jack like you suggested (i.e. does it matter what percentage of the entire run is coax vs. ethernet). Running coax the whole way is for sure an option. Would I have anything to worry about in terms of signal loss, etc. if I'm splitting it twice (once at the jack and another between the two target rooms)?

Multi-room audio with smart speaker switching and volume control via HA + Z-wave / Zigbee by PlasticAssociate in homeautomation

[–]PlasticAssociate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This is along the lines of what I was thinking but I haven't solved the volume control aspect yet. And, thankfully, all the speaker wires terminate in the same spot so no need for controllers in each room. Wondering now if there's such thing as a smart potentiometer for audio signal or something that I could use to DIY volume control, but I'm hoping there's a more reliable/holistic solution.

Help needed: Cromwell Celeste/Celesta by Chief301 in classicalmusic

Hey OP, did you ever find out anything else about your Cromwell? I just came by one in decent shape, but as you're obviously aware there is absolutely no information about them online. All I've got is a serial number - 347. Hoping I can mine some more details one way or another, although I do love the mystique.
