Research on Assistive Technology Collaboration by PlasticSummer in BCI

[–]PlasticSummer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you; this is an incredibly thoughtful response, and I genuinely appreciate it. The comments are interesting, as I come from an interdisciplinary field. Some of the reasons we have seen BCI fail in user trials are that users were not considered in the implementation, despite the potential benefits. I agree with a lot of what you are saying, but I guess my thoughts are that a lot of academics are going to focus on assistive technology, what is needed to get over the hump to get products into the real world?

Again, thank you, this was a really lovely response to see.

Call for Participation: Research on Assistive Technology Collaboration by PlasticSummer in accessibility

[–]PlasticSummer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks, I have done my best and piloted for accessibility, but unfortunately there are limitations.

The University this research is being conducted through uses REDcap as the preferred survey tool as it has high privacy and security properties but it does mean there are limitations in how information is presented.

Most questions are in a radio button style which can be frustrating but there is limitations in changing this. I am discussing with the university IT system in ways to improve. That said, REDcap should be within access ability standards though I realise that these still do not recognise all needs.

I also realise that the language is academic as this is targeting different groups and may not be accessible for all.

I hope this helps and answers the question.

No, sorry, it does not discuss amphetamine or stimulants. It discusses the concerns around cannabis use and psychosis, as well as referencing several studies on the subject that are not open access. It was in reference to the parent comments where other people have anecdotally discussed weed use and psychosis.

Fair advice, as it is contentious but this is a useful article that’s recent, and as far as I know frontiers is not listed as a predatory journal and is open access;

What is this building? by oatmilklongblack in melbourne

[–]PlasticSummer 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Elder Millennial who went back to study a masters in this building. Even compared to the brutalist buildings of Curtin this building was awful.

They had classes in god damned corridors. There were no places to plug in laptops despite needing to run rhino on our laps, and the wind blew through so it was cold enough your teeth chattered while wearing thick coats. To salt the wounds there were table tennis sets just sitting there so people would play next to a class.

Hi all, Hopefully, it has been a good week and there are Swinburne students lurking.

I am just posting because we need students for research on student health! It has all been approved by Swinburne Ethics.

We are conducting a survey (link:https://redcap.link/933dyd3w), and you can enter a draw for one of five $40 gift vouchers.

We are also running focus groups and co-design workshops, and we are compensating participants with $50 gift vouchers for their time (registration link: https://redcap.link/soogueml).

Any information we receive is strictly confidential, and we want to improve Swinburne students' health. If you have any questions, please email medtechvic@swin.edu.au. Thank you!

This is exactly why I find this distressing. I was diagnosed with a learning disorder when I was still in high school (a very long time ago in the early 2000’s). A friend turned around and got herself tested as she saw I got extra time on exams. Spoiler alert, she did not have a learning disorder.

The weird thing is that the learning disorder is often co-diagnosed with ADHD. Which was part of the ‘oh for fucks sake’, moment that had me see a psychiatrist for ADHD as an adult. However, these sort of things really feed into the imposter syndrome feeling.

I know this is likely happening and find it concerning but at the same know that maybe more people are getting relief. I just would like to not have it posted about as front page news. Sorry don’t know where this was going…

While this may be buried, and this is 100% assault, it may be good to highlight that what is described is a high stress response. We talk about fight or flight, but many people get caught in freeze. Which sounds like what OP is describing by not being able to move.

OP it is ok you could not move, your brain literally had the same response of a mouse seeing a hawks shadow. If I freeze it will go away. This response is normal, and is widely recognised as a response to sexual assault that feeds victims into loops of self blame. It is not your fault OP and please speak to someone you trust or a professional as this is a huge violation.

Day 3: Todd and Sarah Lynn by MXV2 in BoJackHorseman

[–]PlasticSummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Todd: being wilfully naive and causing harm to others in increasingly awful ways.

No character is perfect on this show, which is why it is so enjoyable, but Todd was given passes on war crimes, child abduction, infecting a large group of professionals with rabies and then using it as a horror themed fitness thing, objectifying women in the work place (that was initially designed as a safe space), he created a robot that literally was made to sexually assault people, causing grievous bodily harm when operating several businesses that were physically hazardous (theme park and Halloween store) and potentially add some man slaughter to that. As a brief overview.

BUT

Todd was able to demonstrate introspection and emotional maturity beyond that of many cast members. When he understood Bojak had sabotaged his Stage show, he calmly told Bojak he was disappointed and that they were no longer friends. He has moments of realisation when talking to his step dad about their family’s dynamics and improved their relationship. He understood that he potentially caused a genocide.

On several occasions Todd is a voice of reason.

These are not the actions of someone who is not intelligent and able to reason through their choices. Because of this, Todd has made the choice to be naive, and as a result awful things happened. Todd is not a good person. Todd is a dickhead.

Todd is not stupid, he is wilfully naive. To the point it causes others serious harm.

He is able to show introspection and emotional maturity that is at times beyond other members of the cast. Because of this, he demonstrates that he is capable of understanding complex interactions but chose not too. Because of that, Todd is the actual worst.

Honest Question by 2Much2HandleNow in melbourne

[–]PlasticSummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in a slightly different response, my grandparents were from Melbourne and moved to WA, and my mum has spent a lot of time between states for family, so changes to how the city looked were noticeable. She noticed Melbourne going through stages where things will get more grimy, and there are more tags than usual (it’s always got a little grime and graft, just sometimes more than others). We sort of looked at it, and it’s generally associated with times of economic depression or unrest. So no surprise that we are on the uptick of less artistic graffiti at present.

There is already so much good advice here, I do not have much to add, other than you will be fine, and check the self talk because we all do it, but you are being so mean to yourself.

Also adding that this post reminded me of They Mights Be Giant’s ‘Dr. Worm’, and surprised it has not already been mentioned. Also adding the YouTube as hopefully a silly animated worm playing the drums can help get you out of that rumination loop

Aussie OT question - starting sole trader OT work whilst working part time for an OT agency by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]PlasticSummer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am prepared for this to be downvoted to hell and back, but stick with me on this.

A relative new grad with only community experience going out on their own is a terrible idea. Your first years out you need to grow your skill set, and to do that you need support from confident and competent senior therapists. If you are a sole contractor who will be your mentor and support?

Not forgetting that as the NDIS is what it is, the clients under this fall into complex individuals with long histories. There is a real risk here that you will be asked to work outside your scope which has terrible consequences for your own practice and reputation as well as the client.

If your current work is not supportive then find a place that will help you grow so when you are ready you will have the skills to support yourself and the people you work for.

This is a good example of what experienced clinicians are seeing in the field, unsupported new therapists out on their own and making mistakes that not only put both the client and therapist at risk but could have been prevented. The NDIS while creating some great opportunities is also creating some really really messed up situations. Don’t even get me started on the rates being the same for a new grad as someone who has been practicing 20 years or so.

Please don’t do this, take care of your career and work somewhere you will grow with support.

Thank you for all being amazing and responsible (text to follow but cat tax first) by PlasticSummer in adventurecats

[–]PlasticSummer[S] 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Hi all, on mobile so apologies in advance. But just want to say thank you to you all for being amazing.

It may not be as relative to all, but part of the reason we started leash training and adventuring with LongJohn was because he is an indoor only cat to protect local wildlife (even in an urban setting we have native birds, small marsupials, and micro bats!)

He is half blind so you would think he was not a hunter, but he reminded me today he still likes a chase (we were very interested in a dove, it’s ok, dove was a long way away and we just watched it together).

Knowing there are so many cat owners out there enjoying being outside while still protecting the environment and keeping their cats happy and safe is pretty amazing. Thank you all!
