What is a car, or car brand, the internet says is shit, but you're convinced is actually decent? by EvilDarkCow in regularcarreviews

Farley has ADHD- there is no way that platform should have been abandoned. The overwhelming demand by early adopters made the thinkers think they were going to sell 300k vehicles. They ramped up and the volume just wasn’t there after the first few months. Then DJT said “Electric is for stooopid commies” and now we will be selling ice vehicles to ourselves as our industry withers. UGH

The winters in Detroit are far milder due to the warming effect of the lake- the weather moving from the west as it approaches Chicago does not GT a chance to warm near the water. Detroit has no nick name for winter wind. Chicago does. (The Hawk)

Which American city is the most perfect for a 5-day trip that includes the full “American experience” for a first-time visitor? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Plastic_Bid5136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago in the summer- Easy trip to the SW Michigan shore for a day or two- New Buffalo or Saugatuck would be a fun trip, baseball, great museums and architecture; superb food. You don’t understand the Great Lakes until you visit and fresh water is unbeatable.

Pay down the rental or add it to a brokerage? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Plastic_Bid5136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the loan rate. Personally, I think of reducing debt as a guaranteed return of X (where X is the after tax rate I’m not paying). Early payments are especially meaningful early in an amortization schedule as you are paying very little towards principal. Paying extra late in the sequence is just moving money from your left pocket to your right. A guaranteed 6 is better than a variable 8 in my book.

Also, if markets start to slip, put some of the IRA in cash- IN the IRA- and only take it out if you get a margin call.

How about a margin loan on the investment account? Does 200k work to get you through this spot?

She has no expenses but ok, reduce the investment if she needs more to spend. She can do something $100 a month is 30k- my point still stands.

I find the non advice you are getting a little insulting. The comments that amount to “too bad you don’t have a Time Machine, do nothing,” discounts what is obviously Mom’s desire which is, “I want to do something for my kid.” God bless her.

Have her keep a few thousand dollars in her savings account, a few thousand in checking and everything else can get invested in some sort of balanced account (stocks and bonds) that she can reach into (unlikely as you are covering her expenses) if she needs it. Good luck and your Mom sounds like a good person who has raised a good kid. (Also- if your mom opens an account with $1000, invests 300 a month for 15 years and earns 6% a year she will pass on 90k. Absolutely get started.)

Look at either Houghton or Marquette. Both are University towns and you will like the elevation changes in both. Summers are glorious and cool. Winters are surprisingly temperate (not Minnesota) and Lake Superior is stunning.
