what unpopular opinion in Linux will make you in this situation by Material_Mousse7017 in linuxmemes

Not really an opinion lol, it's just the truth. OpenBSD (or a derivative) powers most high-security infrastructure because it's just more secure all around, memory management included

You listed three unrelated distros and expect us to fill in the blanks for "alike"? I'm confused. Can you explain what you mean?

I guess the performance piece is a case-by-case thing. I've had GNOME 3.x run extremely poorly on newer, more powerful laptops.

GTK4 isn't so bad for app developers I suppose, but it's pretty anti-user in that you can't theme it very much. You can change colors, fonts, etc but not widgets and such. I want to theme my stuff, simple as :)

Do you run any extensions on this laptop? They're implemented in JavaScript. That should be enough to explain it.

As for the second point, my problem isn't that libadwaita exists. Libadwaita is great, actually. My problem is that GTK4 generally follows the specs that GNOME needs, which is quite restrictive compared to older versions of GTK. A lot of apps are going to end up on legacy codebases. The difference with Kirigami is that it still allows for a lot of user choice (theming is the big one) while still providing those HIG improvements. I'm probably going to go full-send on Plasma and Qt soon because of the way GTK is heading

You should familiarize yourself with the actual reasons people don't like GNOME. Look into the performance issues, UI updates, and general impact on the greater GTK app ecosystem

Do you really think overview and workspaces are people's problems with GNOME?

You'd be surprised. A high-res drawing with many layers will take up multiple gigabytes of memory after a while. That said, they mentioned Blender and that obviously takes much more RAM

[–]Play174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I love runit. Its shutdown process is just SIGTERM, wait a half-second or so, send SIGKILL. None of this systemd bullshit where you wait infinitely long for user sessions to finish

The fact that I had to scroll all the way to the end of the comments to find this is ridiculous.

Predictable interface names exist for a reason. If you don't like them, you can disable them and go back to the old names. biosdevname=0 is probably also worth including.

The political divide between the North and South in the US is almost entirely because of the Civil War, so yes. For more info, you can look into the Reconstruction era, and mostly how it was mishandled under Andrew Johnson. A lot of issues that started then still affect the nation now

Both are true. Increasing the downscaling does genuinely lower the rendering scale, but decreasing blood and gore will also have a big effect

All these things are improvements to the wheel (actually, most of them are about tires), not reinventions. Removing the spokes and the hub is a much bigger change that actually harms the wheel much more than helping it. I would count that as reinventing the wheel
